A month later, Facebook scooped up the development team behind Lightbox, another photo editing app that allows Android devices users to take and share photos across multiple social media platforms. And Google, in an effort to differentiate itself, recently acquired Nik Software, which makes the iOS photo sharing application Snapseed. Analysts: iPhone 5 launch may have been hampered by component shortage Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) opening weekend sales of five million iPhone 5s may have been lower than some had expected because of supply constraints of crucial components, according to analysts. The idea is that Apple's manufacturing partners are having more difficulty producing the new screens for the iPhone 5, leading to shortages. The device uses in-cell LCD technology, making the display thinner by integrating touch sensors into the LCD, and Apple has contracted LG Display, Japan Display Inc. and Sharp to make the screens. However, analysts think the companies are facing challenges meeting demand for the new technology. "Apple is facing significant production constraints due to a move toward in-cell display technology," Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes wrote in a research note. "Apple is struggling to keep up with demand." Reitzes said he expected production of the components to ramp up significantly in the fourth quarter. "This is like the opening weekend for the summer blockbuster movie," IHS iSuppli analyst Tom Dinges told Bloomberg. "They needed to get a lot of products in the door during a tight window, and these supply constraints that were talked about probably did have some impact." Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement that the company had sold out of its initial supply and was working to get more iPhone 5s into retail sales channels. Other theories abound about why Apple was unable to have supply meet demand, noted AllThingsD. One theory is that Apple's aggressive international rollout of the iPhone 5 is, in fact, too aggressive, and that Apple had to hold back supply for the first wave of countries to meet demand in the second wave in 22 markets, coming later this week. Apple has said that by December the iPhone 5 will be available in 100 countries for 240 carriers. Another theory is that more customers than expected are upgrading to the new iPhone even though they are not getting the new device at a subsidized price. Or it could be that Apple's manufacturing partners all around are maxed out in terms of production capacity. Analysts' expectations for more than five million weekend iPhone 5 sales could also have been entirely unrealistic. Before Apple launched the iPhone 5, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster predicted Apple could sell as many as 10 million iPhones during its first weekend of sales. Meantime, J.P. Morgan analyst Katy Huberty raised the firm's iPhone 5 sales expectations based on Apple's weekend sales, according to CNET. Huberty now expects Apple to sell 25 million iPhones in the third quarter, slightly above previous expectations. Meanwhile, IHS, which performed a physical teardown of the iPhone 5, reported that the bill of materials costs between $207 and $238, depending on the amount of memory in the device. If that is accurate, IHS indicated that Apple's margins per device are between $442 and $611, not counting shipping, marketing, retail and other costs. RIM shows off BlackBerry 10 ahead of earnings announcement Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) will face duel challenges this week in rousing more developer interest for its BlackBerry 10 platform and then convincing investors that it has a plan to make the platform a success. RIM CEO Thorsten Heins today at the Blackberry Jam Americas conference in San Jose, Calif., touted some of the new features of the BB10 platform. Heins said carriers will start testing the platform next month. "BlackBerry 10 is on track," he said, according to CNET. "Our sales forces are getting ready." Heins and other RIM executives showed off the platform's user interface, BlackBerry Flow, which allows users to scroll seamlessly between apps. BlackBerry Peek allows users to glance at another application without leaving the one a user is currently running. Additionally, RIM touted BlackBerry Hub, the combination of a unified inbox and a notification center, according to AllThingsD. On Thursday after the market closes RIM will announce its quarterly earnings, Analysts told Bloomberg they expect sales to be down 41 percent from a year ago. RIM has already said it expects to report an operating loss for the quarter while it continues to invest in marketing and work through the transition to BlackBerry 10. RIM expects to release its first BB10 devices in the first quarter of 2013 and Heins and his executive team have been busy wooing potential carrier partners. RIM is banking on BB10 to help it reverse sliding market share in the smartphone market. According to research firm Gartner, in the second quarter of 2012 RIM captured 5.2 percent of global smartphone sales compared to 11.7 percent in the year-ago period. "There are some people who believe new products drive handset stocks and there's new product coming, so therefore they'll get an uplift," Nomura Securities analyst Stuart Jeffrey told Bloomberg. "If people are holding on for that, they're going to have to wait a long time." Analysts will also be looking to see how much cash RIM has conserved. The company reported having $2.2 billion on hand at the end of June. "Cash ensures a level of survivability and cash makes your partners more comfortable that you are going to be around in the future," BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis told Reuters. Meanwhile, Heins and RIM clearly hope investors and customers will shrug off the brief service disruption RIM suffered Friday in Europe and Africa. In a statement Heins apologized to customers and said that up to 6 percent of RIM's user base may have been impacted and that subscribers may have experienced a maximum delay of three hours in the delivery and reception of messages. Heins said RIM is conducting "a full technical analysis of this quality of service issue and will report as soon as it concludes." Boingo wholesales Wi-Fi offloading to CCA wireless carriers LAS VEGAS--Boingo Wireless will provide Wi-Fi offloading to Competitive Carriers Association members. The Wi-Fi service provider is offering a white-label solution to CCA members so that their customers can connect to Boingo's global footprint using one single account. CCA President and CEO Steve Berry said that it's critical for competitive carriers to have an offload solution because as much as 22 percent of mobile traffic is expected to be offloaded to Wi-Fi by 2016. Wi-Fi offloading is just one topic of discussion among CCA members at their annual convention in Las Vegas this week. During yesterday's FierceWireless executive breakfast on "Spectrum Strategies for Today's Mobile Broadband World," held in conjunction with the conference, Terry Addington, chairman and CEO of SI Wireless, hinted that the CCA members were looking at different wholesale Wi-Fi opportunities as a way to offload mobile broadband traffic that was starting to strain their networks. Fellow panelist Tom Sugrue, senior vice president of government affairs at T-Mobile USA, noted that T-Mobile is already using Wi-Fi offloading to help it better manage capacity on its network. A recent Senza Fili Consulting survey, sponsored by Radisys, found that 60 percent of cellular operators in North America are already deploying Wi-Fi offloading and 40 percent have plans to deploy it in the next two years. Dish accuses Sprint of glossing over spectrum issues Dish Network and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) continue to spar over proposals to shift Dish's MSS S-band spectrum by 5 MHz, with Dish accusing Sprint of glossing over critical issues related to its spectrum and LTE deployment plans. In a filing with the FCC, Dish blasted a previous Sprint filing, arguing that "Sprint's silence on the key timing and interference issues related to any changes to the AWS-4 band plan underscores that there is no public policy benefit to Sprint's self-serving proposals." Earlier this year the FCC voted to explore how the S-band of MSS spectrum, which the FCC has renamed "AWS-4," should be designed so that the satellite spectrum can be repurposed for terrestrial use. Dish currently owns 40 MHz of S-band spectrum--specifically from 2000-2020 MHz and 2180-2200 MHz. Dish hopes to launch an LTE Advanced network with its spectrum by 2016, but is awaiting rules from the FCC on its spectrum as well as word on whether the FCC will shift its holdings at 2000-2020 MHz up 5 MHz to 2005-2025 MHz. Dish has argued repeatedly against such a shift. In the new filing, Dish said that Sprint's assertion that substantial 3GPP standard-setting work will be needed for the AWS-4 band regardless of whether there is a 5 MHz shift is misleading, and that a shift would require new standard-setting work. Sprint has said that a 5 MHz shift would help its LTE operations by freeing up more PCS spectrum for auction. Sprint is currently using the 1900 MHz PCS G Block for its nascent LTE network, which allows it to deploy 5x5 MHz channels. However, Sprint has made clear it would like to get access to the adjacent PCS H Block, which would give it the ability to deploy 10x10 MHz channels. Wider channels result in faster speeds and more capacity. However, Dish said that the FCC's ability to "auction the H Block for robust LTE operations is constrained by a number of technical and operational issues. Sprint's suggestion that the H Block is ready for immediate wireless broadband use grossly simplifies those challenges and is contrary to the concerns of numerous stakeholders in this proceeding." Some of these issues may get hashed out next week at the PCIA conference in Orlando, Fla., where both Dish Chairman Charlie Ergen and FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski will give keynote addresses. One big question is whether Dish will announce a partnership with an existing wireless player, perhaps Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR), which some analysts think may have received a one-time $396 million investment from Dish. "If an announcement does come next week, then it will also come as a major shock to most wireless industry observers, because almost no attention is being given to the possibility of a tie-up between Dish and Clearwire," TMF Associates analyst Tim Farrar wrote in a blog post. "However, this may be the last chance for Dish to pressure the FCC not to shift their uplink spectrum, and a major announcement of network plans could tip the scales in their favor. As a result, I suspect that Ergen's speech could well contain an announcement of a network deal, a partnership or perhaps even both." Huawei building mobile OS as backup against Android Chinese handset manufacturer Huawei confirmed it is building its own mobile operating system as a safety net in the event it must distance itself from Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, which is the focus of patent disputes between Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and other smartphone makers. In an interview with Reuters, Huawei CEO Wan Biao said the company plans to augment its Android product range with devices running Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) forthcoming Windows Phone 8. "Whatever consumers like, we'll develop," Wan said. "We're also devoting resources into coming up with a phone operating system based on our current platform in case other companies won't let us use their system one day." Wan's comments follow just weeks after a Huawei spokesperson denied the company is working on its own OS. "Huawei will not be launching a proprietary operating system in the foreseeable future," Huawei Vice President of Corporate Media Relations Scott Sykes told Bloomberg earlier this month. "Our innovation strategy is governed by our commitment to open collaborations." Huawei is not the only handset maker exploring alternatives to Android. ZTE is collaborating with Mozilla to build smartphones based on the open-source software development initiative's fledgling Firefox OS. Earlier this month, Google halted Acer's plans to launch a smartphone running Chinese Internet giant Alibaba's Aliyun mobile operating system, citing software compatibility concerns. Just last month a jury awarded Apple a $1.05 billion victory against Samsung Electronics after determining that Samsung's Android devices infringed on a variety of Apple patents, including those covering the design of iOS-based smartphones and tablets along with related features and functions. Apple is widely expected to assert its patents against other Android smartphone makers as well. They love it because it helps to grow service revenues. They hate it as they don't feel they are fully monetizing it. You can't go to a decent wireless conference these days without seeing a graph depicting the disconnect between revenue and data growth. In response to this mobile operators have been pushing capped data plans, saying unlimited data services are unsustainable and cost too much. Here in the U.S. both AT&T and Verizon Wireless are now pushing "data buckets" to be shared across multiple devices. However, not every operator in the U.S. market has followed this strategy. T-Mobile recently reintroduced an unlimited mobile data plan. And, by true I don't mean one of those disingenuous plans that say "unlimited" but throttle the customer's connection when they reach a certain limit. By true unlimited I mean T-Mobile allows its subscribers to use as much data on its HSPA+ network as possible each month. Unlimited data offerings, while posing network-challenges, can be used as a defensive measure by an operator who is trying to stem market share erosion. Obviously this type of offering is better suited to an underutilized network. But, as unlimited data can reverse subscriber losses and even grow the user base, unlimited data services can also degrade performance on the network due to congestion. So the question is how can T-Mobile, and other operators, sustain what we have all been told is unsustainable? One of the more obvious ways to sustain unlimited data services is to increase network capacity. This includes network upgrades; going from HSPA+ to LTE and eventually to LTE-A. Also falling under the increased network capacity umbrella are small cells and HetNets. But these steps come with a steep price tag and can be very complicated to implement. In fact the cost of adding capacity using these methods is the main reasons operators say unlimited mobile broadband is unsustainable. The costs are greater than the reward. So this got me thinking what are some alternative solutions operators can take to sustain unlimited data services beyond new infrastructure investments? Following are a few of the ideas that came to mind:...Continued More Read more about: Verizon Wireless back to top | > Beyond the Cable: The Move to Mobility by MSOs - October 9th, 11:00 am EST/ 8:00 am PST The best immediate prospects for MSOs may lie on using Wi-Fi to harvest data from mobile operators for backhaul over MSO HFC networks.
