Today's Top News

1. Cisco buys Wi-Fi location analytics firm ThinkSmart

By Dan O'Shea Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Cisco Systems has acquired Ireland's ThinkSmart technologies, a location analytics company that Cisco reportedly will leverage to bring greater intelligence about usage patterns, such as traffic trends, usage durations and peak-time fluctuations, to service provider and enterprise Wi-Fi networks.

ThinkSmart will become part of Cisco's Wireless Network Group upon the closing of the deal during Cisco fiscal first quarter of 2013. Cisco did not reveal financial terms of the deal.

Cisco said in a blog post that it wants to provide those Wi-Fi network owners with more information about users so that they can better engage with them. The move comes after Cisco forecasted last spring that as much as half of the world's Internet traffic could be occurring over Wi-Fi connections by 2016. Wi-Fi also increasingly is being viewed as a vessel for traffic offloaded from service provider mobile broadband networks.

In the case of mobile carriers, anything that gives them more information about what is really happening over the Wi-Fi networks they are offloading users to will be a great help. Their customers will not want to put up with degraded service quality, and to make better decisions about offloading and how to manage traffic between mobile and Wi-Fi networks, carriers will need as much information as they can get their hands on. Having the analytical bent as they rely more on Wi-Fi is one of the things that will help carriers become more comfortable making Wi-Fi a big part of the future mobile broadband network planning blueprints.

2. Infonetics sees over-crowded small cell vendor community

By Dan O'Shea Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Everyone in the wireless industry is talking about small cells as the next big thing, and they may very well represent a technology trend that changes how network operators manage network congestion. That is why so many vendors are trying to figure out an angle on small cells and how to capitalize on the trend.

Infonetics notes that the number of small cell units sold (including microcells, picocells, eNodeBs and public access femtocells) is set to increase nearly 40-fold from 2011 to 2016. The research firm also expects global small cell revenue to grow at a 73 percent compound annual growth rate from 2011 to 2016.

However, market research firm Infonetics Research says there may not be room for everybody who is interested in profiting from this change in the market. In the firm's latest "Small Cell Equipment" forecast, Stephane Teral, principal analyst for mobile infrastructure and carrier economics at Infonetics Research, says that high unit volume will not necessarily be enough to support all the vendors in the space.

This particularly will be the case as carriers have to confront the challenges of deploying large numbers of small cells, such as how to provide enough backhaul for them and how to solve any interference issues, Teral says.

What this chiefly means is that vendor competition in the small cell sector is about to intensify. It also should serve as a warning for vendors that have been eyeing the small cell market but do not have their stories in order yet. If you are not too far along yet and are having trouble trying to outline how different your solution is from the approaches of other vendors, you might want to stay home.

3. ABI: LTE subs surpass WiMAX in U.S., South Korea, Japan

By Dan O'Shea Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Since the earliest LTE deployments, the mobile industry has been on the lookout for the tipping point where the number of subscribers to LTE networks would surpass the number of subscribers to WiMAX networks, particularly in countries where WiMAX has had a strong foothold. For all the talk about how WiMAX still has a long life, and how WiMAX and LTE might be even be positioned as complimentary, it has been hard to ignore the fact LTE is gaining ground.

That point finally appears to have been reached in at least three countries--the U.S., South Korea and Japan. In each of these countries, the number of LTE subscribers surpassed the number of WiMAX subscribers starting in the fourth quarter of 2011, and again in the first quarter and second quarter of this year, according to ABI Research.

For now, sign-ups to TD-LTE networks are further behind because of the relatively low number of smaller operators with active networks, but subscribership to these networks should ramp up toward the end of next year and in 2014, according to the ABI report, "4G Subscribers, Devices, and Networks."

Phil Solis, research director at ABI Research, also notes that in mid-2014, even the number of TD-LTE subscribers will have pushed past WiMAX subscriber totals--the point at WiMAX sign-ups will have begun what is likely to be a slow, but inevitable, decline.

LTE handsets have led the way as the primary LTE device for capturing subscribers and controlled 77 percent of the LTE device market last year, according to ABI. However, LTE external modems and media tablets with embedded LTE modules have started to become more of a factor this year. However, ABI predicts LTE handsets will surpass 80-percent of device shipments during 2016.

4. Ohio cable player picks SkyPilot for rural broadband

By Dan O'Shea Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Trilliant, owner of broadband wireless networking vendor SkyPilot, announced that Ohio service provider Hometown Cable has picked the SkyPilot system for a rural broadband deployment.

The deal comes after Hometown Cable earned a $2.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Services program for improving broadband coverage in under-served areas. Hometown Cable also recently acquired g-Wireless, a broadband Internet service provider which uses SkyPilot's mesh equipment in its network. The cable operator is now looking to expand that network.

As in other SkyPilot deployments, WAV Distribution, in partnership with Moonblink Communications, will be providing the equipment and logistic services for the project. The first phase of the project will involve installation of network gateways, extenders and connectors to deliver wireless Internet access to residential and business customers as well as rural schools. The SkyPilot Element Management System (EMS) software will be utilized for provisioning, configuration and overall network management.

Wi-Fi mesh architectures are not lighting up municipalities the way they did during the last decade, but they have become appropriate for use cases like providing affordable rural broadband coverage. Mesh also has become an important element in the broader approach of smart grid companies like Trilliant.

5. Smith Micro's QuickLink MiTile speeds Windows 8 connectivity

By Dan O'Shea Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 8 launches this fall, and Smith Micro has added a new piece to its line of QuickLink broadband connection manager solutions to address connectivity for Windows 8 devices.

The company unveiled QuickLink MiTile, which allows network operators to quickly integrate Windows 8 connection management features into their existing device portfolios, while also allowing them opportunities for upselling and enhancing customer quality of service.

According to Smith Micro, QuickLink MiTile benefits operators in three ways: integrating with an operator's billing system; collecting local connectivity performance data from the device; and enabling built-in support for mobile hotspot devices.

The Windows Phone 8-friendly solution arrives just as new devices based on the operating system are becoming available. While Windows Phone 8 is no iOS or Android, and has a long way to go even with the considerable backing of Microsoft, Smith Micro seems to recognize that mobile carriers have to be ready to support the advancing connectivity needs of all the devices they offer, not just the most popular ones. Perhaps the knowledge that QuickLink is able to enhance Windows Phone 8 device connectivity might help a few more of the new smartphones work their way into the market.

SPOTLIGHT ON... Wi-Fi architectures evolving to address distributed enterprise

With corporate enterprises become less physically and geographically monolithic--as well as more distributed and virtualized--it makes sense for the Wi-Fi networks of old to evolve, too. And, according to Network World, many vendors are now targeting this market, too.

The new approaches are looking to replace the traditional method of deploying Wi-Fi in the enterprise--the model of using a centralized controller for thin access points deployed throughout a large building--with architectures that either virtualize the... continued on the Web
