  • Apple silences Ping, friends Facebook
Apple is pulling the plug on its social music tool Ping, which will be shut down at the end of the month. In Ping's place, Apple is integrating Facebook features into iTunes, giving users the opportunity to "like" or "share" any item in its online store. "It's an admission that Apple hasn't done particularly well on the social side of things -- but that it needs the help, primarily to flog iThings," Anna Leach writes. • Twitter turns over protester's tweets amid threat by judge
Twitter has released three months' worth of tweets from Occupy Wall Street protester Malcolm Harris, who is charged with disregarding police orders. A New York judge had threatened the company with a fine if it failed to disclose the information. Prosecutors say the tweets could show whether the defendant knew about the orders he is accused of disregarding. Google/The Associated Press (9/14) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story

  • Why William Gibson loves Twitter
Author William Gibson says he's fallen for Twitter in a big way. Facebook and other social networks lack Twitter's chaotic, unmediated charm, Gibson says. "Its appeal to me is the lack of structure. ... There's this kind of democratization that I think is absent with more structured forms of social media," he says. Research and Reports
  • Most SMB owners now use social networks
Nine in 10 small-business owners say they use social media platforms to promote their companies, and 78% say that online outreach is as important and effective as face-to-face meetings, according to a Manta survey. "Small businesses understand they need to go where their audience is. Participating, networking and being found online is extremely important today in growing their business," says Manta CEO Pamela Springer. Los Angeles Times/Money & Co. The Takeaway
  • Planning to go viral? You're doing it wrong
Brands that set out to create viral content are on the wrong track, says L'Oreal USA content-strategy chief Deborah Marquardt. The best bet is always to focus simply on creating interesting, arresting content that will catch people's attention and get them talking. "It's about an ongoing conversation. ... There's a dialogue, and consumers are going to let you know when something isn't working," Marquardt says. • Google brings home the Bacon
Google has baked the party game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" into its search results, allowing users to check film stars' "Bacon number" with a simple search. The search engine mines online movie databases to determine how many degrees of contact a given film star is from having appeared in a movie with Kevin Bacon.
