| September 2012 Greetings Design Fans, School is back in full swing and as we prepare for a busy fall of international design weeks, conference coverage and some special Core77 programming (more to come!), we look forward to a new season of design inspiration and discovery. This past month we took a moment to explore the landscape of intellectual property as it relates to designers. With the verdict of Apple v. Samsung still fresh on our minds, what does it mean for practicing designers? We ask two IP lawyers to weigh in on design patents and the the upcoming new gTLD systems. And on this crisp Monday in New York, we remember our good friend Bill Moggridge. The design world lost one of its greats this weekend and he will be missed. | The outcome of the Apple v. Samsung case has designers wondering about the protections afforded by design patents. Industrial designer and lawyer Michael Hages debunks three misconceptions about design patents and breaks down what every designer should know about protecting their own work. BONUS: You can now download a .pdf of the whole series!
CYBERSQUATTING AND THE NEW INTERNET The Internet is about to become a more colorful place, and more stylish and enticing than .biz, .tv or even .xxx ever dreamed of. New gTLDs are "generic top-level domains" are scheduled to be released on the Internet in the third quarter of 2013. What does this mean for designers? To start, ICANN is currently reviewing nearly 2,000 new gTLD applications for extensions such as .design, .Nike, and .Africa. The Internet will also become increasingly multi-lingual because it opens up the gTLD system to non-Roman characters. IP Lawyer Stacy Wu prepares designers for the coming changes.
Dave Malouf weighs in on what the Apple v. Samsung case means from an Interaction Design perspective. A closer look at the dispute through the lens of icons, layout and gestures unpacks the details of the case. What does more stringent IP protection mean for corporations, designers and most importantly, consumers?
A CONVERSATION WITH MO DUFFY, RED HAT INTERACTION DESIGNER Mo Duffy is a senior interaction designer at Red Hat, a billion dollar company that is the world's leading open source and Linux provider. Xanthe Matychak met Mo this past spring on a panel at SxSW and put together a short conversation for Core77. Not only does Duffy get into the nitty gritty of the politics of the workplace and the realities of usability testing, but she is a passionate advocate for open source and the democratization of design.
A look at roadbooks from a pre-GPS age. From the road atlas to pacenotes, motorcycle-mounted scrolls to the wrist-mounted originals, this four-part series is a part of Core77 editor Hipstomp's ongoing look at pre-Industrial ID.
The Superhuman exhibition explores the extraordinary ways people have attempted to improve, adapt and enhance their body's performance throughout history. Ethical debates around the augmentation of our bodies are becoming as widespread in everyday life as they are in sports. By including objects such as spectacles and false teeth, the curators of 'Superhuman' reflect on how technologically enhanced our lives already are, thereby drawing our societies fears of technology into question.
