<p>Bob Shrum and I discussed the Obama/Romney face-offs with Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC. Here are some of the points I made:</p>
<blockquote><p>If I was going to give the edge to one of them it’d be the President, simply because, between his debates with then-Senator Clinton and his debates against John McCain, he’s not going to have that hard-swallow moment when he’s out there dealing with the pressure.</p>

<p>The President is well aware of everything Mitt Romney is going to try to say and if Mitt Romney succeeds in getting off a critique of the President — that he’s been a failure or that he doesn’t tell the truth — you can bet that the President is going to have a pretty good comeback. Because almost every accusation that Mitt Romney can make, the President can make a counter accusation on the same point. It’s that moment, if Romney pulls it off, I am confident the President will come back. Can Romney then respond again in an effective way? We’ve never seen him do that.</p></blockquote>

<p>Here’s what Claire McCaskill said on “Morning Joe” when I asked her who would help her more if they came to Missouri, the President or Bill Clinton:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>McCASKILL</strong>: I think they would both help and I would welcome both of them. I think they both have a capability of talking to working people that are working three jobs. My opponent wants to abolish the minimum wage. We have a lot of Missourians that are working two and three jobs, minimum wage, to try to make it all work out. And, of course, Mitt Romney has said that he doesn’t care about those folks. They’re paying payroll taxes but because they’re working minimum wage jobs, they’re not worried about tax shelters. They’re worried about shelters for their kids. And, so, I really think that both of these strong leaders would be a great help. I’d love it if either one of them would come to Missouri.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p><strong>HALPERIN</strong>: Mr. Speaker, if President Obama is re-elected, and you’re a historian and a student and longtime strategist in the party, is this more of a disaster for and explained more by Mitt Romney being a bad candidate or will it say something about the weakness of the Republican Party?</p>
<p><strong>GINGRICH</strong>: Well, since we’re going to keep the House, gain seats in the Senate, and may end up with more governorships than at any time since 1921, I don’t think it says much about the Republican Party. I mean, we have more state legislative seats than at any time since 1925. We have more candidates of diversity. You look at a Susana Martinez. You look at a Nikki Haley. This is a party that’s a much bigger, broader party than it’s Washington consultant base.</p>
<p><strong>SCARBOROUGH</strong>: Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio. These aren’t people on the margins. These are people in the biggest states in America.</p>
<p><strong>GINGRICH</strong>: This is about a specific campaign with a specific set of problems. It’s not about the broader Republican Party. And, frankly, if Obama does win, which I, of course, am totally opposed to, but, if he does, he faces an enormous decision the first three or four weeks after that election. Is he going to govern like Bill Clinton or is he going to keep governing like Barack Obama? Because if he’s going to govern like Barack Obama 2014 would be for the Democrats probably the worst election in modern times.</p></blockquote>

<p>On “Morning Joe,” I key off <a href="http://time.chtah.net/a/tBQZx6GBASRffB8ex6jCUgxoshs/time88" target="_blank">Charles Krauthammer’s column</a> to talk about a key part of Romney’s challenge:</p>
<blockquote><p>“If you watch conservative media, read Krauthammer, watch Fox, or talk privately with any Republican politician, it’s hard to find anybody, even some people, as you all know, inside the Romney campaign, who think they’re doing the right thing now, that they’re on track to win despite Governor Romney saying that. The challenge for them is, because of the dynamics is we’ve seen this movie before, they’re getting all this advice in public and in private. They’ve got to do something that shows a change. As I said before, it can’t just be a good debate performance. And as Kelly said, the events have to be bigger. The rhetoric has to be sharper. They’ve got to be driving the day. They didn’t lose the news cycle yesterday but they didn’t win it either. And, right now, they’re basically three plays and out every possession. The President is playing prevent defense. But people like Charles Krauthammer are just frustrated because they don’t see a reaction to being behind and some sort of change. Be angry. Be a fighter. Go big, whatever it is. They have to do something different in the expectation of the conservative press or people are going to starting turning on him.”</p></blockquote>

<p>My “Morning Joe” Take on why the GOP’s newly contemplated support for Todd Akin is a big risk in wake of <a href="http://time.chtah.net/a/tBQZx6GBASRffB8ex6jCUgxoshs/time90" target="_blank">his “ladylike” remarks</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>SCARBOROUGH</strong>: So it looks like he can’t handle even the possibility of success.</p>
<p><strong>HALPERIN</strong>: There’s two elements with him. One is whether he can win and whether investing money in there for them is a good idea. The other is, when he does stuff like this, and every Republican who knows him thinks he’ll do more like this, the problem is other Republican senate candidates get asked about what he said. So, if they don’t cauterize him, cut him off, keep him from being part of the national Republican conversation, they risk having him be a problem, not just for losing the seat there, but for hurting other Republican candidates across the country. I think they’re going to be reminded of that dynamic with this latest remark.</p></blockquote>
