<p>My “Morning Joe” colloquy with David Axelrod in which he suggests the time for details is later:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>HALPERIN</strong>: David, Social Security came up last night on “60 Minutes.” Let me ask you, in a second term, what is the President proposing to do to reform Social Security, save it for future generations, and will it involve lower benefits for anyone or higher taxes for anyone?</p>
<p><strong>AXELROD</strong>: Well, I think, you know, there too, Mark, the approach has to be a balanced one. We’ve had this, we’ve had discussions in the past and the question is, can you raise the cap? Right now, Social Security cuts off at a lower point. Can you raise the cap so people paying a little more, the upper incomes are paying a little more into the program and do you adjust the growth of the program? That’s a discussion worth having. But, again, we have to approach it in a balanced way. You can’t, you know, we’re not going to cut our way to prosperity. We’re not going to cut our way to more secure entitlement programs — Social Security and Medicare. We have to have a balance.</p>
<p><strong>HALPERIN</strong>: What’s his proposal?</p>
<p><strong>AXELROD</strong>: Mark, I’ll tell you what. When you get elected to the United States Senate, we’ll sit at that table. We’ll have — this is not the time. We’re not going to have that discussion right now unless the Congress wants to sit at a table and say, OK, we’re ready to move on a balanced approach to this. The reality of Social Security is this is a much less imminent problem than Medicare and so this is not, you know. Medicare, we’ve extended the life of Medicare by close to a decade through the changes that we’ve made and Governor Romney wants to repeal. But Social Security is a more distant problem, one that needs a solution, but it isn’t as pressing as the Medicare issue.</p></blockquote>
<p>So the President’s position on Social Security seems to be the same as Mitt Romney’s on tax deduction changes — there should be no real details or debate to inform voters before the election.</p>

<blockquote><p>“Well, I think, the big question for Romney is performance. Look at what he did on “60 Minutes.” Look at — he talked on the plane last night to his press corps. He’s still giving the same kinds of answers, the same specificity and lack of specificity, the same failure to drive a message to put the President on the defensive. If you’re a candidate behind and you have that long “60 Minutes” interview, or you make a choice to go talk to your press crops, you got to drive something that dominates the news, rather than the same old questions about low level of performance, same questions about lack of specificity, same questions about why are you behind in all the battleground states. I don’t think he did that in either of those two opportunities. The time is running out before the debate for him to frame things so the debate is more on his terms rather than on equal terms or the President’s terms.”</p></blockquote>

<p><p><span style="color:#888888;"><em>5:00 am ET</em></span></p>
<p>If you are paying close attention to the presidential campaign, chances are that at some point this weekend, you talked with someone who assured you that the race is all but over and President Obama will win. This ubiquitous conventional wisdom is mostly propelled by the <a href="http://time.chtah.net/a/tBQYdiHBASRffB8ex6jCUgxos1l/time93" target="_blank">battleground state polling</a> showing significant and nearly uniform Democratic leads, Romney's <a href="http://time.chtah.net/a/tBQYdiHBASRffB8ex6jCUgxos1l/time94" target="_blank">various gaffes</a>, flaps, and weak performances, and roiling divisions within the Republican Party. Indeed, I've heard this sentiment myself in the last few days from, among others, a prominent Romney fundraiser in the Midwest, a rabidly partisan GOP mortgage broker, and a virulently anti-Obama corporate executive with national political campaign experience.</p>
<p>However, while it is true that Romney faces a tough comeback terrain, it is entirely premature to declare the race over. There has been a flood of advice of late from frustrated Republican operatives and pundits about how Romney can turn things around, some of it sensible, including suggesting <a href="http://time.chtah.net/a/tBQYdiHBASRffB8ex6jCUgxos1l/time95" target="_blank">he be more specific</a> about how his presidency would differ from four more years of Obama.</p>
<p>At this point, however, Romney's conduct is only one of three elements required for him to overcome the incumbent's narrow but persistent lead. To be sure, Romney <a href="http://time.chtah.net/a/tBQYdiHBASRffB8ex6jCUgxos1l/time96" target="_blank">must stop making errors</a>, improve his stump speech, and <a href="http://time.chtah.net/a/tBQYdiHBASRffB8ex6jCUgxos1l/time97" target="_blank">perform well in the debates</a>. But a comeback will also depend on happenstance and circumstance.</p>
<p>Sometimes in politics you make your own luck, but sometimes luck makes you. President Obama has had his share of bad fortune (<a href="http://time.chtah.net/a/tBQYdiHBASRffB8ex6jCUgxos1l/time98" target="_blank">the BP oil spill, for example</a>), but Candidate Obama has led a pretty charmed life in this four-year cycle up until now. If his current run is interrupted in the next fortnight (with, say, a national security crisis), Romney will have an opening.</p>
<p>But Romney's greatest hope remains, as it has been from the beginning, the economy. The unrattled strategists in Boston continue to profess a belief that, in the end, the conditions of the last four years, and the pubic sentiment that the President would continue to govern as a liberal, are enough to cause a surge on Election Day that is not being fully picked up in the polling.</p>
<p>Don't get me wrong: if you were betting today, Obama is the safe choice. But if Romney closes strong, gets a break or two, and the focus goes back on the economy, November 6 will see a close contest, and, maybe, a surprising outcome.</p>

<p>Bill Clinton’s answer to Bob Schieffer on “Face the Nation” about whether Hillary will run is a classic — and will encourage the pro-run chorus:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Bob Schieffer</strong>: Mr. President I have to ask you about your wife. She's getting ready to wind up her term as Secretary of State. Do you think she will run for president next time out? A lot of people think she ought to if Barack Obama's reelected.</p>
<p><strong>Bill Clinton</strong>: I don't know. You know she's worked hard for 20 years. We had eight years in the White House then she ran for the Senate, she served in New York for eight years then she immediately became the Secretary of State, and she's tired. She's really worked hard. I think she's done a fabulous job. I'm very proud of her. But she wants to take some time off, kind of regroup. Write a book. I hope we'll be working together. She was doing this work long before I was and of what we do now in women and girls were driven by some of the things she started in the State Department. So I think we ought to give her a chance to organize her life and decide what she wants to do. I just don't know. She's an extraordinarily able person. I've never met anybody I thought was a better public servant. But I have no earthly idea what she'll decide to do.</p>
<p><strong>Bob Schieffer</strong>: Do you think she'll be the most qualified person to run?</p>
<p><strong>Bill Clinton</strong>: I've never met anybody I thought was any better than her at this. But again, we got a lot of able people in our party who want to be president. There's never a shortage of people that want to be president. Got a lot of bright young governors, we've got a lot of other people will probably run out of the Congress. We won't have to worry about people wanting to be president next time who are good people. But I just think, you know, it's a decision she'll have to make. But whatever she does I'm for her first last and always. She's the ablest, I know I'm biased, but I think she demonstrated as senator and as Secretary of State that she has extraordinary ability. A lot of commonsense. A lot of, you know, Stick-to-itiveness, she'll push a rock up a hill as long as it takes to get it up the hill.</p>
<p><strong>Bob Schieffer</strong>: And if she decided to do it, you'd be right there to help her?</p>
<p><strong>Bill Clinton</strong>: Whatever she wanted me to do, I would. But you know, who knows? It's her decision, her life. But whatever she decides, I'll support it.</p></blockquote>
