DirecTV launches Genie, offering new subscribers free multiroom DVR and 'NFL Sunday Ticket' DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) launched its Genie whole-home DVR Thursday, offering new subscribers who sign two-year contracts set-tops for up to five rooms and free access to the 2012 NFL Sunday Ticket package. | | Image source: DirecTV | The Genie promotion marks one of the most aggressive subscriber acquisition campaigns yet for DirecTV, which lost 52,000 subscribers during the second quarter. Boasting that Genie can record up to five programs simultaneously, DirecTV takes shots at rival Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) and cable operators in a website it launched to tout Genie. It notes the high-definition DVR can automatically record TV series that it expects a subscriber would be interested in based on their viewing habits. In addition to offering new subscribers Genie, a DVR manufactured by Pace (LSE: PIC) that contains 1 terabyte of storage space, DirecTV said subscribers can get up to four free Genie C31 thin client set-tops from Pace that can be used to access programming from any other room. Genie is also compatible with the RVU protocol, which will allow subscribers that buy TVs from Samsung and other manufacturers building RVU-enabled TVs to access the whole-home DVR and DirecTV's user interface without a set-top. DirecTV is pitching five programming packages with the Genie offer, ranging in price from its $30 Entertainment package to the $90 monthly Premiere package, which includes premium networks HBO, Showtime, Starz and Cinemax. It's offering three free months of access to the premium networks to all new subscribers. Time Warner Cable recruiting principal architect for IPTV video services 3. Midcontinent to market TiVo DVRs 4. MLB Network takes heat for limiting distribution of Nationals playoff game Major League Baseball is taking fire for limiting distribution of Wednesday's Washington Nationals-St. Louis Cardinals playoff game to the league-owned MLB Network, which left subscribers who don't buy premium tiers from Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Cox Communications and RCN unable to watch the game. This is the first year that MLB Network, which debuted in 2008, has carried playoff games. It's also the first year the Nationals have made it to the playoffs. Many Nationals fans who couldn't watch the game on cable were also steamed that the league scheduled Wednesday's game for 1 p.m. ET, making it difficult for fans with jobs to see the game in person. But those with tickets probably weren't thrilled either, as St. Louis crushed the Nationals 8-0. MLB Network says it is available in about 68 million homes. The league has attempted to use distribution of playoff games to compel cable operators to carry the network. Most affiliates distribute it on digital premium tiers. For example, in the D.C. area, Comcast carries it on its Digital Premiere and Digital Preferred packages, and RCN carries it on its Premiere package. The Cardinals are poised to clinch the National League Division Series in a game tonight against the Nationals in D.C. That game will be carried by TBS, which is available in more than 100 million cable and satellite homes. Massillon to deploy Motorola Medios multiscreen software Ohio cable operator Massillon Cable said it agreed to use Motorola Mobility's Medios software to deliver multiscreen programming to subscribers that want to watch live and video-on-demand cable programming on tablets and smartphones within their own homes. Motorola said Thursday that the independent cable operator will use its Medios SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE solution, which can ingest, transcode and deliver TV shows and movies to mobile devices. Motorola announced a similar deal with Time Warner Cable in May. Massillon hasn't yet announced which networks it will allow subscribers to access on mobile devices. Viacom (NYSE: VIA) and other programmers have resisted allowing cable operators to stream linear networks to subscribers using mobile devices without agreeing to pay additional fees. The Medios software could also allow Massilon to deliver programming to other IP-connected devices in subscriber homes such as gaming consoles and connected TVs. The new receiver from DirecTV sounds nice but I do want to point out that DISH’s Hopper has two terabytes of space, you can record up to six shows at a time, and it’s got the PrimeTime Anytime feature which allows you to record the big four networks seven days a week during prime time. I read in an article from Wired.com that the only way you can stream to other TVs without a set top box is if the TVs are RVU compatible just like you mentioned here. That means you would have to purchase a Samsung TV and only three of those will work at this time. If you do the math, it works out to be really expensive and I’m not sure that everyone is willing to spend. I work for DISH so I know that the monthly fee for DirecTV’s Genie is much more expensive.
