1. Motorola Mobility building next-generation Televation device

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Motorola Mobility is developing a second generation version of its Televation device that will contain multiple tuners capable of delivering video from a set-top to several tablets and other IP-connected devices in a subscriber's home, EVP Marwan Fawaz told FierceCable Friday.

Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) is the first U.S. cable MSO to deploy the first generation of its Televation product, using it in January to launch its AnyPlay service to subscribers in Denver and Nashville, Tenn. AnyPlay transcodes QAM channels into IP video and delivers encrypted signals to devices such as Apple's iPad and the Motorola Xoom tablet. Adding multiple tuners to Televation could help Motorola compete with TiVo, which recently launched a similar $130 product called TiVo Stream that can deliver four simultaneous streams to mobile devices.

Motorola recently licensed Comcast's Reference Design Kit, a pre-integrated software bundle that can power tru2way, IP and hybrid set-top gateways. Signing the RDK will allow Motorola to supply set-tops and gateways that can support Comcast's Xfinity X1 digital video service. Pace is currently the only vendor supplying set-tops for X1, which is available in Boston and Atlanta. Comcast has said it will expand the rollout of X1, which lets subscribers access a cloud-based interactive program guide and apps such as Facebook and Pandora Internet radio, in five additional markets this year.

Fawaz, the former CTO of Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR) and Adelphia Communications, joined Motorola in June. He and SVP of strategy and technology Matt Bell said Friday that the company will focus next week at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo on solutions for multiscreen video distribution. They said the company will also pitch hybrid digital video solutions and IPTV products.

Since joining Motorola in June, Bell said he has worked on creating "pre-integrated solutions" that can help operators transform their network architecture, including network-based DVR technology, multiscreen programming solutions and home automation products.

In addition to its Medios multiscreen software, Motorola will be touting its DreamGallery software in Orlando next week, which can help operators integrate social TV applications and offer subscribers t-commerce products.

2. Cable operators pressured to cut ties to Huawei

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Comcast  (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Suddenlink Communications, BendBroadband and other cable operators that have deployed set-tops from Chinese manufacturer Huawei are facing pressure to cut ties to the company following the release of a House Intelligence Committee report earlier this week that said Huawei and telecom supplier ZTE could pose a national security threat.

The timing of the release of the report could pose some challenges for Huawei, which has been one of the largest exhibitors the last few years at The Cable Show and the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo conventions. The company will be pitching set-tops and other gear to cable operators at next week's Cable-Tec Expo in Orlando, Fla.

Suddenlink said it is still reviewing the report. "Our team has been reviewing it and we will proceed accordingly on these proprietary matters," spokesman Pete Abel said in a statement Friday.

Last year, Huawei recruited former BendBroadband CTO Frank Miller to lead its efforts to sell cable gear to U.S. operators. BendBroadband was one of Huawei's first U.S. customers and was cited in the House Intelligence Committee report, along with Comcast and Suddenlink. BendBroadband didn't respond to requests for comment about how the report could impact their business with Huawei on Friday.

A Comcast spokesperson said that "We work with many vendors, including Huawei, whose role is limited. We work with multiple vendors to foster innovation and competition, and we regularly evaluate current and potential vendors. Ensuring the security of our network and our customers' information has always been and continues to be our top priority."

3. Time Warner Cable launches VoiceZone apps

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) launched VoiceZone apps for computers, mobile devices and its digital cable platform to allow its voice customers to access voicemails and control caller-ID-to-the-TV settings.

The MSO said its VoiceZone on TV app lets subscribers use their cable remote controls to send incoming calls to voicemail. "For a particularly engrossing program, you can also turn on 'No Calls Now,' which prevents any further phone interruptions by turning off the ringers on all home phones as well as Caller ID prompts until the show ends," Ingrid Simunic, Time Warner Cable senior director of voice/product management, wrote on the company blog Thursday.

Time Warner Cable is also offering a VoiceZone Connect that subscribers can download to PCs or Macs to view incoming call notifications, send calls directly to voicemail or forward calls to a different number. Subscribers that have downloaded the My TWC app for the iPhone and Android phones can access VoiceZone through those mobile apps, the MSO added.

Several pay TV providers offer subscribers apps that are similar to VoiceZone, including Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Verizon (NYSE: VZ), Cox Communications and AT&T (NYSE: T).

4. Judge threatens to rule in favor of AMC and Cablevision unless Dish releases documents

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

AMC Networks and Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) win the $2.5 billion breach-of-contract suit they are waging against Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) unless Dish agrees to turn over documents related to the case, New York Supreme Court Judge Richard Lowe warned on Thursday.

Lowe, who accused Dish attorneys earlier this week of attempting to delay the trial, said on Thursday that he may launch an investigation aimed at determining which attorney failed to adhere to his instructions, according to an account of Washington Analysis associate Andrew Harms, who was in the courtroom. "I don't care how much money you got," Lowe told the attorneys after they didn't turn over documents that they maintain are privileged.

AMC, a former subsidiary of Cablevision, sued Dish in 2008 after the company dropped the Voom HD networks.

5. Netflix agrees to caption all online content by Sept. 2014

By Mariko Hewer Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) promised to offer closed captions on all its content by September 2014 as part of a settlement in a lawsuit brought against the company by a deaf Massachusetts viewer.

This decision comes on the heels of an FCC ruling mandating that online video services provide captioning for all programming originally aired on TV. The commission said the mandate would "better enable individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to view IP-delivered video programming."

According to an article in the Washington Post, 90 percent of Netflix's online content is already available with closed captioning.

The company's spokesman, Jonathan Friedland, said one of the biggest challenges will be providing closed captioning across all platforms, noting, "it's a tall order to offer high quality captioning on such a broad range of devices."

The FCC began its 3-stage implementation of the new rules Sept. 30, even as many companies, represented by the Digital Media Association (DiMA), protested they had not had enough time to prepare.

Nevertheless, Netflix may have unintentionally benefited from this lawsuit, as they now have a head start on the competition--at least those companies that are complaining they have not had enough time to reconfigure their systems. By having a deadline less than a year away, Netflix could avoid the penalties or mad rush other online streaming services may encounter trying to keep up with the FCC's guidelines.
