Dear Jason, Last week we reached a milestone in the fight to protect public media. The presidential debate inspired a spontaneous creative outburst over Facebook and Twitter, and hundreds of thousands of people declared their support for NPR, PBS, and — most of all — Big Bird.1 We have a plan to save Big Bird. The next stage of this fight is in Congress and our communities. Debate aside, the fact remains that there are five bills in the U.S. House designed to cut funding for NPR and PBS. And in the last few years, 10 states have cut ALL or most of their funding for local public media stations. Congress needs to know why you care about public media. If we’re going to stop these threats in their tracks — and I think we can — we’ll need thousands of stories from people like you. Tell us what public media means to you. Did you grow up with Sesame Street? Is your local NPR station the only source of quality news in your town? Do you use NOVA in your classroom? Are you addicted to the interviews on Fresh Air? We’ll take your feedback into meetings with members of Congress. Funding public media costs each of us less than $1.50 per year. But that tiny amount creates something amazing — and absolutely necessary — for our communities. Let’s build on this moment and create a movement of public media defenders.  We need to protect public media 365 days a year, whenever and wherever it's under threat.
