Halloween
Halloween Costumes That Won't Frighten the Planet

You can practically feel the Earth tremble in fear as it faces another horrifying Halloween of overconsumption that's far more trick than treat. Yet the season needn't be haunted by senseless waste and a ghastly spirit of disposability. Boos and ghouls of all ages can dress up without creating an environmental monster.

Clothesline
Baby Laundry in 4 Steps

Baby laundry is not that hard to do. It's just that the volume and frequency at which you do it makes it seem overwhelming. The tiny clothes are so cute, but a full load of baby wash seems to have about 1000x the number of articles as an adult load. And thanks to spit-up, baby food, and other bodily fluids, it feels like there are million times more stains. So, to make the baby laundry easier for myself, I follow 4 steps.

Don't Panic
The Great Organic Panic That Isn't

Say it ain't so! A new study being reported just about everywhere finds (gasp!) that organic foods (no!) are no more nutritious (horror!) than conventional foods (shock!). Media alarms are blaring. Big Agriculture is crowing. Consumers are confused, and just about everyone appears to have forgotten the most important thing of all. Organic foods were never supposed to be more nutritious to eat.

Shiitake Mushrooms
Foods We Love: Shiitake Mushrooms

Shiitake mushrooms add a gentle, musky flavor to any dish. Most often found in Asian cooking, these convex caps date back as far as the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The name comes from the Japanese word "shii," which is the term for the wood of the Pasania species of tree where shiitake grow. And "take" which literally means "mushroom." Here's a luscious recipe for risotto with leeks, shiitake mushrooms, and truffles.

Book Cover
Must Reading: Breasts: A Natural and Unnatural History

After giving birth to her second child, Florence Williams had her breast milk tested for various pesticides and toxins, including flame retardants. Her results came back "higher than expected, and ten to a hundred times higher than those found in European women." Williams' new book is a clarion call to women everywhere who are seeking answers to the doubling rate of breast cancer since the 1940s.

New Cleaner Database

We thank reales for a measured reaction to "The Dirt on EWG's New Cleaner Database: Well, sometimes you just can't have it all, lol. I for one am perfectly happy with the tiniest amount of preservative to keep the products fresh and bacteria free! The alternative is a product that is "all" toxic chemicals. Pass! Keep up the good work guys!!

Top Product Review: Dishwasher Gel

Here's why Denise gives our Automatic Dishwasher Gel five stars: Does the job efficiently without the harmful side-effects - and a beautiful outcome! No spots, etc - even without adding anything additional. I love feeling good about no toxic chemicals being applied to my family's eating utensils, as well as no toxic chemicals being added to our water supply when I run my dishwasher. THANK YOU 7th Gen!
