S'Morrissey Doesn't Taste So Good

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 04:00 AM PST

While Morrissey and s'more hybrids don't taste great, they sound even better than the sum of their parts. Ok, that might not be true either, but if you still want one of these punny pillows, then head over to Etsy, where you can make one your own for $40.

Hostess Ads From The Pages Of Marvel Comics

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 03:00 AM PST

Here's a bit of comedic comic book advertising powered by Marvel Superheroes to tide you over while the Hostess company figures out if it's going the way of the Dodo bird or not.

Marvel and Hostess had a long running campaign in which supervillains were defeated by great tasting Hostess snacks like Twinkies and Cup Cakes, which begs the question- how will we take down the forces of evil without sugary Hostess snacks at our disposal?

7 Overlooked Thanksgiving Rituals

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 10:00 PM PST

vThe Thanksgiving traditions that get all the press are the turkey and other foods, football, Macy's parade, and Christmas shopping. The authors of first major sociological study of Thanksgiving, published 21 years ago in the Journal of Consumer Research, identified those other traditions that everyone recognizes, but didn't realize that so many other families do the same things. For example:

2. The forgetting of the ingredient

Oh no! I forgot to put the evaporated milk in the pumpkin pie! As the authors of the Thanksgiving study state, “since there is no written liturgy to insure exact replication each year, sometimes things are forgotten.” In the ritual pattern, the forgetting is followed by lamentation, reassurance, acceptance, and the restoration of comfortable stability. It reinforces the themes of abundance (we’ve got plenty even if not everything works out) and family togetherness (we can overcome obstacles).

Oh yeah, that happens every year at my house. So do the other six traditions you can read about at mental_floss. Link

R.I.P. John Fairfax, A Man Who Rowed Across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans When He Wasn't Doing Even More Extraordinary Things

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 09:00 PM PST

John FairfaxJohn Fairfax of Henderson, Nevada died at the age of 74. He was the most interesting man in the world:

At 13, in thrall to Tarzan, he ran away from home to live in the jungle. He survived there as a trapper with the aid of local peasants, returning to town periodically to sell the jaguar and ocelot skins he had collected.

He later studied literature and philosophy at a university in Buenos Aires and at 20, despondent over a failed love affair, resolved to kill himself by letting a jaguar attack him. When the planned confrontation ensued, however, reason prevailed — as did the gun he had with him.

In Panama, he met a pirate, applied for a job as a pirate’s apprentice and was taken on. He spent three years smuggling guns, liquor and cigarettes around the world, becoming captain of one of his boss’s boats, work that gave him superb navigational skills.

Later on, Fairfax settled down and engaged in more pedestrian activities, like crossing the Atlantic and Pacific in a rowboat and becoming a professional baccarat player.

A Modern Crusoe

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 07:00 PM PST

Photo: Brian Cassey

David Glasheen, of Restoration Island off of Brisbane, has been likened to Robinson Crusoe and Tom Hanks character from Cast Away - Chuck Noland. Why? Because David Glasheen lives on a desolate island 1,5000 miles from civilization.

Glasheen was once a businessman in Australia. In the stock market crash of 1987 he lost everything, millions of dollars and eventually his marriage. From then upended himself and left his corporate life in Sydney for the island life. Photographer Brian Cassey joined Glasheen on the island and produced an article for The Sydney Morning Herald titled The Last Days of Eden.

David grows his own vegetables, catches his own fish, brews his own beer, and keeps himself -along with his dog Quasi- entertained. Check out more photos and info here.

"Men that own government bonds are popular with the ladies!" You don't believe me? But this ad from government of Japan says so!

Japanese women are seeking men who invest in government bonds, according to an advertisement being run by the Ministry of Finance.

“I want my future husband to be diligent about money,” a 27-year-old woman says in an ad being run in free magazines promoting a fixed-rate, three-year note that Japan started selling last week. “Playboys are no good.” She’s one of five women featured in the page, which says “Men who hold JGBs are popular with women!!”

Doctor Who Script Found, No Spoilers Leaked

How many of us would love a chance to read a script from a future episode of our favorite TV show? What if you found the chance in the back of a taxi? What would you do? A student in Cardiff got the chance to peek at an unaired Doctor Who script, but decided not to take it. Good call, I would hate the spoilers.

Hannah Durham stumbled upon the script for a forthcoming episode of the sci-fi show during a night out with friends.

Producers, scriptwriters and fans of Doctor Who thanked her for returning the missing script and preventing precious plot details from being leaked online.

Playing The Viral Market

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 12:30 PM PST

How good are you are predicting viral videos? Do you also happen to enjoy the stock market? Then you will love the Viral Video eXchange - an online stock market game. You can view trending videos, buy stock in videos, spend and earn (fake) money, and so on. I personally just bought 100 shares of Eat, Fry, Love: A Cautionary Remix with William Shatner.

The game is the creation of Dave Ganly, a 31-year-old Irishman who settled in London four years ago. “I wanted to make a throwback to web based games like the BBC's Celebdaq, which I played in college,” he said in an email interview with the Dot. “I love viral video as well, and was annoyed at the poor quality of discovery of really original viral content (as opposed to just 'what had a million views yesterday’).”

“The game has two major 'goals' from a player perspective – one is to finish an in-game story that reveals itself as players become more wealthy … and the other is to hit the overall target of one million voins. Like lots of games of this type, having seriously rich users (e.g. people on one million + voins) would cause too much imbalance, so players are awarded a final in-game achievement and reset to one thousand voins.”

John William Lewin was a naturalist and wildlife artist who documented different species 200 years ago, before the aid of photography. He was intrigued by the tales of exotic wildlife in Australia and went there to see for himself. Lewin's artworks became the first by a European to illustrate the wildlife Down Under. See how he showed the rest of world what Australia had in a collection at BibliOdyssey. Shown here is his painting of a platypus, from 1810. Link

A Look Beyond the Turkey: A Brief History of Thankfulness and Harvest

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 11:00 AM PST

v

The Thanksgiving holiday Americans will celebrate tomorrow is based on a historical feast from 1621. However, the idea of expressing gratitude for a bountiful harvest with a celebration is an idea that goes way back -probably as far back as agriculture itself. Geeks Are Sexy takes a look at some of the ancient harvest festivals that celebrate the accomplishment of reaping enough food to last until next growing season, and the evolution of the way we celebrate today. College Basketball's New Record: 138 Points

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 10:30 AM PST

vIt's been more than a half-century since an NCAA basketball player scored over 100 points in one game, but it happened last night as Grinnell guard Jack Taylor scored 138 points. In fact, Taylor blew those old record-holders away.

Taylor scored 138 points to shatter the NCAA scoring record in Division III Grinnell's 179-104 victory over Faith Baptist Bible on Tuesday night in Grinnell, Iowa.

Taylor, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound sophomore from Black River Falls, Wis., made 27 of 71 3-point attempts, was 52 of 108 overall from the field and added seven free throws on 10 attempts in 36 minutes.

"It felt like anything I tossed up was going in," Taylor told The Associated Press.

Rio Grande's Bevo Francis held the NCAA scoring record with 113 points against Hillsdale in 1954. In 1953, Francis had 116 against Ashland Junior College. Frank Selvy is the only other player to reach triple figures, scoring 100 points for Division I Furman against Newberry in 1954. The previous Grinnell record was 89 by Griffin Lentsch last Nov. 19 against Principia.

Man Catcher

mancatcher

This terrifying-looking weapon of German origin was used to jerk riders off horses:

Man catchers were used in Europe in the late 1700s during times of war. The terrifying collar pulled riders off horseback. In peacetime, it is thought the device may have caught and held escaped prisoners.

As contestants on a game show that has video producers competing against each other, the team of Travis Kurtz and Matin Atrushi had 72 hours to make a funny video, and this is the finished product.

We made this video for a TV show called "Viral Video Showdown" on SyFy Channel (Episode "Such a Cliche"). We had 72 hours to come up with an idea based on: 1.) action 2.) a cliche and 3.) the idiom "Between a rock and a hard place" and then write, shoot, edit and deliver a final product. We hope you enjoy it.

The episode featuring the making of this video will air this Tuesday. -Thanks, Travis!

The Hall of Technical Documentation Weirdness

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 08:30 AM PST

Internet old timers might recall the Hall of Technical Documentation Weirdness, in which Darren Barefoot posted technical writing and pictures that made your head hurt. Someone explained this to me once: the least competent person on any project is assigned to write the manual because he's not contributing much to the actual project. Other examples are due to lack of language fluency or an obligation to be overly explicit (like the above example). Anyway, the website went defunct in 2008. But Barefoot is now resurrecting it by posting the archives on Pinterest. The archive is not yet complete, and submissions are welcome. Link  -via Boing Boing
