Alas, poor Giggles! I knew him, Horatio; a fellow of infinite jest. I hope that artist Vik Muniz returns the clown's skull to the churchyard for proper burial.

Directors Audition For Star Wars Episode VII

The quest to find a new director worthy of guiding the Star Wars saga in the right direction has begun, and celeb filmmakers such as Woody Allen, Kevin Smith and Michael Moore are vying for the job in these hilarious audition tapes courtesy of Conan.

Kevin Smith would be a good choice, but a Star Wars movie directed by Woody Allen would be too talky, and Michael Moore would just turn the whole thing into a documentary about the injustices suffered by the universe at the hands of Jabba the Hutt!

The Doctor Keeps Getting Younger All The Time

Robin Gatti wanted to make sure her family photoshoot wasn't boring, so she themed it after Doctor Who. While the whole series is pretty adorable, I can't help but love this one, with a baby Matt Smith who looks like he's going to drown in Tom Baker's scarf.

Cigar Box Purses Are So Passe

Besides, why promote cigar use when you could instead encourage reading with a gorgeous book purse like this one. Sure, some people might be upset about the destruction of a great book, but there's always the chance that it was damaged before the cover was stripped off anyway.

Can Sex Help Sell Coffins?

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 07:00 PM PST

Ad execs have long known that sex sells. But can it sell coffins? Enterprising coffin-maker Zbigniew Lindner swears by it. He has been printing calendars of sexy women posing next to coffins years now:

One image from the 2013 edition of the calendar has a blonde model, wearing only a skimpy thong and with a snake draped around her neck, reclining on a coffin. In another, a woman wearing a crimson corset is depicted pulling out the heart of a man lying on a casket.

"My son had the idea of creating the company's calendar... so that we could show something half-serious, colorful, beautiful; the beauty of Polish girls and the beauty of our coffins," said Zbigniew Lindner, the firm's owner.

"We wanted to show that a coffin isn't a religious symbol. Its a product," he said. "Why are people afraid of coffins and not of business suits, cosmetics or jewelry?"

The Catholic Church is understandably upset. Piotr Pilat and Dagmara Leszkowicz reports for Reuters: Link (Photo above via Se.pl, which has more photos)

And yes, I know you want to see the calendars, which you can do at your own risk over at the company's official site: Kalendarz Lindner

A Dinosaur Named Sauron

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 03:00 PM PST

tA dinosaur discovered through a fossil found in Morocco has been named Sauron, after the Lord of the Rings character. Paleontologists Andrea Cau, Fabio Dalla Vecchia, and Matteo Fabbri of Italy’s Museo Paleontologico di Montevarchi described the dinosaur as best they could. Only a small part of the skull was found, but it was enough to determine that this dinosaur did not belong to a known species.

While the rest of the dinosaur remains unknown, after reanalyzing the frontal the paleontologists decided that it was truly unique enough to merit establishing a new name. The subtly-domed dinosaur is now known as Sauroniops pachytholus–the genus name a tribute to the demonic Sauron of the Lord of the Rings series, and the species name for the thick dome on the dinosaur’s head.

The dinosaur and human skull are illustrated for scale, not to suggest the dinosaur's diet. Link -via Ed Yong

Is Self-Gifting Wrong?

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 02:00 PM PST

When it comes to gifts, better safe than sorry. If you want something, the only way to make sure you get it is to buy it (for) yourself!

The Telegraph reports that self-gifting is on the rise:

The average amount spent on "selfgifting" has risen to nearly £280 a year. At the same time, nearly one in four people expects to spend less on gifts for their family in the coming year. Nearly one in two people has bought their own gifts for a special occasion, while one in 10 always buys their own gifts.

The research, commissioned by Barclaycard, revealed that six in 10 Britons still believe it is the thought that counts when it comes to gifts, but one in six would rather have chosen their gifts themselves. Nearly one in four (23 per cent) does not trust their family and friends to get the right presents, so believes self–gifting is "the most sensible way to get what they want."

Now, head on over to the NeatoShop to start self-gifting stat, people!

POLL: What do you think Neatoramanauts? Is Self-Gifting Wrong?

  • Yes - It's the path to hell

Sprinkles

Sometimes it helps to know whether the bakery person writing down your instructions for cake decoration will be the same person that actually decorates it. But then again, that might not help at all! Cake Wrecks has other examples in a post of cake instructions that ended upon the cake itself. The next time the kids ask me to put sprinkles on a cake I'm baking, I'm going to do just this. Link

Sometimes there is just no right answer. I feel like I have been trapped in this terrible situation a few too many times. An easy way to forget the pain is to make new friends, like Mr. Whiskey and Ms. Scotch. I don't know why Scotch comes out as a girl in this scenario, it just sounds better.
