| Tell Me If I'm Crazy
As we noted on our most recent blog, the big winners in the early part of the year tend to be the oversold stocks, rather than the momentum plays. To be blunt, stocks to avoid or that have been left for dead usually make a decisive move higher in the first week or so of the year and are usually some of January's big winners. So, today we are highlighting some of these stocks as potential "January Effect" candidates. If they seem like "headscratchers" to you, they are probably good prospects.
I have been poring over a lot of the big losers this year. It is amazing that in a big up year for the indices, those stocks that are non-correlated to them have not fared well. As a result, there are quite a large number of stocks from which to choose on the major indices, the bulletin board and pink sheets.
After reviewing these stocks, I have come to the conclusion that perhaps one way to play the January Effect is what I am calling The Grecian Stock Formula (apologies to the makers of the Grecian Formula hair coloring products.)

Let the January Effect Begin
We talk a lot about seasonality because most investors' gains occur during big, but short runs in the market. These big runs often occur from December through January.
This year is a little different than most because of the fiscal cliff concerns. In some cases, we have seen some small-cap and penny stocks generate a bit of a run. Still, it has not been a scenario where a rising tide lifts all boats in this segment.
To combat the concern regarding significantly higher dividend tax rates in 2013 and to generate interest in their companies, many large-cap stocks have recently declared special dividends, along with initiating or continuing stock buybacks. Not to be outdone, small-cap stocks have joined the fray.
