Top 13 Predictions for 2013

by Rob Goldman

Now that we are reaching the end of the year, it's time to provide our top 13 predictions for 2013. First, let's see how we did with our original predictions for 2012 ...

Prediction #1: The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 Index will end the year up 9%, with much of the gains in the early and latter part of the year. As of midday on December 21, the DJIA and S&P 500 are up 7.8% and 13.5%, respectively. We still may meet our mark on the Dow and the S&P has been a big surprise.

Prediction #2: The NASDAQ Composite and Russell 2000 Index will bounce back strongly, with the NASDAQ rising 12% and the Russell 2000 jumping 14%. NASDAQ is up 15.6% and the Russell is up 13.9%, which is right on target. We were aggressive relative to most prognosticators and even we fell a tad short.

With that in mind, I am going to give you an early Christmas present. It is an inside peek into a little-known and up-and-coming major leading indicator for retail stocks. It can be used to ascertain the current level of interest consumers have in dozens, if not hundreds, of retailers and to determine if sales will be brisk or tepid.

You all have probably seen the amazing statistics regarding gift cards. People can't buy enough of them, and companies can't sell them fast enough. The sale and use of gift cards has really helped drive retail commerce, as the average gift card user spends 20-30% more than the face value of the gift card when transacting business.
