Tuesday's Daily Brief: Newtown Massacre: What We Don't Need Is a 'National Conversation' -- We Need Action

Tuesday, December 18, 2012
Arianna Huffington: On Sunday night, President Obama spoke at an interfaith service for the victims of the horrific elementary school shooting. Not surprisingly, it was a poignant and moving speech. But the sad, horrible, tragic fact is that none of what we are witnessing is surprising. Shocking, yes, but not surprising. Mass shootings have become a defining feature of modern America. Yet on the issue of gun violence, President Obama has shown a gift for eloquent rhetoric but no follow-through. What we need now is not another national conversation but action -- starting with a ban on the sale of weapons that are only good for mass murder. Will the president lead the way? Will Congress act? Or will we succumb to the fatalistic conventional wisdom that says we'll never be able to prevent this from happening again -- and again and again?

Norm Stamper: Repealing the Second Amendment Would Make Us 'Better Than This'
The Second Amendment -- elevated to a state of holiness, its problematic comma debated for decades and "resolved," for the moment, by the Supreme Court -- is a relic. It made sense when it was written. It does not make sense now.
Emma Gray: Bushmaster Rifle Ad Reminds Us To Ask More About Masculinity And Gun Violence (PHOTO)
As we struggle to make sense of Friday's massacre, we need to begin bringing masculinity into our conversations. And we need to teach boys that being a "real man" means using your words instead of your fists ... or your knives ... or your semiautomatic rifles.
Douglas Anthony Cooper: This Is What You Take to a Gun Fight
In its advertisement for the type of weapon used by the child-killer Adam Lanza, Bushmaster's slogan reads: "Consider Your Man Card Reissued." Lots of people out there feel as if they're man-card-carrying alphas. Now it's time to do battle against an organization that endangers the lives of your children.

To blame the violence in Newtown, Connecticut on Asperger's or a personality disorder, as many media outlets currently are, is a serious mistake.
Tavis Smiley: Blood on Our Hands
The lost lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School have something to say to the entire nation, but especially to black America. We'll have blood on our hands if we miss this moment to protect the lives of inner-city youth who more than most are subject to random acts of violence and death.
