'Twas the night before Christmas,
when all through the house
I was thinking about taxes,
file separately or joint with my spouse?
For the President and the Speaker
were both blowing hot air.
The fiscal cliff is looming,
not sure they even care.

My deductions were nestled all snug in their beds
As I tried to keep my household from going in the red.
The gifts were unwrapped, not yet under the tree
As I fretted about the cliff's impact on me.

The negotiations were proving quite a distraction
Keeping me from enjoying my holiday action.
Both sides played their usual riff
Oblivious that we're headed over the cliff.

"We need to raise revenue!" The Democrats say
While Republicans are unwilling to play ball today.
This to help all find a good healthcare provider
And pay for the spending of Obama and the Decider.

To balance the budget, I get, is not easy
But the lack of progress is making me queasy.
Surely our leaders can find a solution.
If they can't, then it's time to start a revolution.

Now, McConnell! Now, Reid!
Now, House Speaker John Boehner!
Reaching a compromise should be a no-brainer.
To the Oval Office, to the Senate floor,
Sit in a room and lock the door.

And don't come out until you've reached a deal
Then the rest of us can enjoy our festive meal
Knowing that our future will not be ruined
By government bureaucrats with no idea what they're doin'.

But it's the tax on dividends
that really gets my blood boiling
So much so that the holiday season is spoiling.
Taxes on dividends amounts to double taxation
But the leaders in Washington
don't want to hear my oration.

I pray they don't let the tax on dividends spike.
We'll be paying enough with the other tax hike.
Dividends could soon be taxed as ordinary income.
Investors will be forced to pay more and then some.

But enough of my silly dividend rant
That's ignored by Washington that will not or can't
Understand how dividends help seniors retire
And live comfortably rather than in circumstances dire.

So I beg the House Speaker and President Obama
To help us avoid this blunt fiscal trauma
That will surely occur when spending is slashed
As our taxes spike higher, and our future is smashed.

But I have a dream that those two went to work
Even though they each think the other's a jerk
And figured out a deal that's a nice compromise
That will make fiscal sense as advisers advise.

But instead I'm sure any deal will be a load
Of manure where the can will be kicked down the road
And another deadline will be not far off in sight
But for now crisis averted, to all a good night.
