About 6 out of 10 consumers say they're more likely to trust or share content from brands with an established social media presence, according to a Mass Relevance survey, and two-thirds of consumers say they've made purchases based on social media content. "This study proves that people want to engage with a 'social brand' and shows how brands can begin to build social experiences that drive interaction and sales," says Mass Relevance CEO Sam Decker. | | - Privacy-policy fight could delay Instagram's ad strategy
Instagram is backtracking on changes to its privacy policy after users complained the revised rulebook apparently allowed the service to claim ownership of their photos. The uproar could force the site to rethink, or at least delay, its monetization strategy. "We are going to take the time to complete our plans, and then come back to our users and explain how we would like for our advertising business to work," Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom wrote in a blog post. Adweek (12/21) - Facebook makes last-minute holiday push for Gifts service
Facebook is targeting last-minute Christmas shoppers with Web and mobile banner ads touting its Gifts service and reminding users that recipients receive instant notifications of their gifts. The campaign, combined with the service's recommendations engine, might make sending virtual Gifts an appealing option for flustered shoppers who've missed the window for Christmas gift delivery, notes Josh Constine. TechCrunch (12/22) - Twitter announces "Golden Tweets" of 2012
Twitter announced a list of "Golden Tweets" that generated the greatest number of retweets in 2012. At the top of the heap was President Barack Obama's "Four more years" tweet, celebrating his victory in the U.S. election. Other much-shared tweets included Justin Bieber's tribute to a deceased fan; the U.K. Olympic team celebrating its successes; and a Japanese voice actor announcing his engagement to a fellow anime star. "Facebook" was the most searched-for term on the Web in 2012, marking the fourth year running the social network has won the honor. "Facebook" searches accounted for 4.1% of all search traffic, an increase of 33% from last year, likely because people are increasingly using search engines instead of URLs to navigate to their favorite sites. MediaPost Communications/Online Media Daily (12/21) | | | - Social media gives Avon an advantage on the global stage
Avon has 6 million representatives in 70 markets, and sells to customers in more than 40 languages -- and that raises some tricky issues for the company's social media strategists, Andy Sernovitz writes. Managers let representatives take the lead to craft locally relevant social content, but also trained them to ensure they kept things simple, fun and to the point. "It's not enough to give your advocates the right tools -- you also have to make sure they know how to use them," Sernovitz notes. SmartBrief/SmartBlog on Social Media (12/24) - Brands should stop overlooking Foursquare
Facebook and Twitter are the obvious places to start when planning a social media strategy -- but Foursquare is a close runner-up, Niall Harbison writes. Neither Twitter nor Facebook can compete with Foursquare's location-based services, and its loyal users are an attractive target for marketers. "With over 40 million venues and one million businesses to check-in to, there's a lot of potential to make Foursquare work for you," Harbison writes.
