Report: Apple's iOS 7 surfaces in developer usage logs Developers have identified traces of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) next iPhone and iOS software update in app usage logs, The Next Web reports. Multiple iOS developers have discovered references to a new "iPhone6,1" identifier, powered by a device running iOS 7; Apple's current flagship smartphone, the iPhone 5, carries the identifiers "iPhone5,"' and "iPhone 5,2." The app requests originate from an IP address on Apple's Cupertino, Calif., campus, suggesting that the company's software development staff is testing iOS 7's compatibility against existing iOS apps. The Next Web adds that the iOS app usage data does not divulge specifics on new software or hardware features, although sources say Apple began working on iOS 7 in late 2012 and is on track to finalize the operating system's feature set in the near future. Apple has traditionally announced new versions of iOS during its annual Worldwide Developer Conference, typically held in San Francisco in June. Apple has not yet divulged any details of this year's event. Dubbed "the world's most advanced mobile OS" by Apple CEO Tim Cook, iOS 6 rolled out to developers in June 2012. The update introduced roughly 200 new features, including deep integration with Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), the Passbook virtual wallet and the much-maligned Apple Maps. Japan's Daily Yomiuri reports that Samsung plans to offer Tizen devices through carrier partners including NTT DoCoMo, Vodafone and France Telecom. Sources say the manufacturer is seeking to nurture a Tizen ecosystem to rival Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS. Android currently dominates the Samsung device portfolio, although the company also offers smartphones running its own bada OS. Early last year, a Samsung executive said the firm would merge bada with Tizen, but the company quickly backpedaled: "Samsung and other members of Tizen Association have not made a firm decision regarding the merger of bada and Tizen," Samsung said at that time. "We are carefully looking at it as an option to make the platforms serve better for customers." Targeting multiple device categories including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and in-vehicle infotainment systems, Tizen combines open-source technologies with a standards-based HTML5 development environment, enabling the creation of device-independent, cross-platform mobile applications. The Linux Foundation hosts the Tizen platform, and Samsung and Intel head the technical steering committee developing the OS. Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) has said it will support Tizen and Mozilla's forthcoming Firefox mobile OS. "The reason we are excited about supporting those platforms is that we think that these platforms are driving an agenda around HTML5. We wanted to have involvement in it. We want to be completely aware of what HTML5 means for mobile devices," Fared Adib, Sprint's senior vice president of product development and operations, told FierceMobileContent in October. "We are waiting to see how mature these platforms are going to be before we agree to deliver products with manufacturing partners on those platforms." "We are very sad to announce that Hackulous is shutting down," reads a post on the Hackulous homepage. "After many years, our community has become stagnant, and our forums are a bit of a ghost town. It has become difficult to keep them online and well-moderated, despite the devotion of our staff." Installous enabled users with jaibroken Apple devices to download free pirated iOS apps and games from a variety of sources, then install the software as if they had purchased it directly from Apple's own App Store. Some apps were available to Installous users within hours of their official release. The Installous shutdown coincides with the emergence of new app piracy options that do not require consumers to jailbreak their iOS device. The Next Web reports that one app, Zeusmos, provides users with a license and provisioning profile that allows them to install pirated apps; it is available for free on jailbroken devices or sold as a premium download for non-jailbroken units. "The intent of Zeusmos will be to SOLELY code sign applications," the app's creator, 15-year-old Kevin Ko, said in a statement provided to The Next Web. "We will not be supporting or encouraging any form of piracy through the link providers or even via search (although they were based off the iTunes API). The intents [sic] as I have stated [was] to allow open development for developers. Recently I've had the time to add this feature into Zeusmos called the 'Exclusive Apps' section where developers who got their application rejected in the App Store were able to post their application on here for free and share their application to a large audience of users. Such applications even included Grooveshark and many others." Another service, Kuaiyong, offers free versions of apps that appear to have been purchased under an Apple enterprise license, which enables installation across multiple devices. Some developers report thousands of users installing the same exact copy of their app, complete with the same set of encrypted credentials. Merrill Lynch: Facebook mobile ad revenues will eclipse desktop next year Revenues from Facebook's (NASDAQ:FB) mobile advertising initiatives will eclipse its desktop efforts next year, according to a new Merrill Lynch forecast. "We believe Facebook's advertising revenue will accelerate at least through [the first quarter] and we are raising our advertising estimates 6 percent to 7 percent for 2013 and 2014," Merrill Lynch analyst Doug Anmuth wrote in a report to investors. "We are raising our mobile news feed estimates in our bottom-up ad model to $2.37 billion in 2013 and $4.0 billion in 2014, up from $2.0 billion and $3.3 billion previously, and we expect mobile to surpass desktop ad revenue in 2014." Anmuth credited the revised forecast to positive marketer feedback on Facebook news feed campaigns as well as the social network's "ability to leverage third-party data." The report cites the example of Samsung Electronics, which relied on Facebook to promote the launch of its Galaxy S III smartphone. The device maker generated "$129 million in sales attributable to Facebook, delivering an ROI of 13X on Samsung's $10 million of Facebook ad spend," Anmuth noted. As of the third quarter of 2012, mobile initiatives account for 14 percent of Facebook's total advertising revenues. In addition to ads in users' news feeds, the company has introduced mobile units designed to drive iOS and Android app installs, targeting consumers based on the apps and games they already access on their smartphones. Late last month, Facebook halted a trial that inserted mobile advertisements into selected third-party iOS and Android apps: "While the results we have seen and the feedback from partners has been positive, our focus is on scaling ads in mobile news feed before ads off of Facebook," a Facebook spokesperson told Mashable. Sources told All Things D that Facebook also has halted plans to run ads across publisher partners' mobile sites, explaining that publishers remain concerned that Facebook is not yet ready to deliver external mobile ads capable of generating significant value for the social network or its partners. That belief is driven, at least in part, by the relatively low rates Facebook commands for ads across its own platform. One publisher said that while rival ad networks like Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) have gained traction by offering publishers a guaranteed revenue threshold regardless of ad performance, Facebook has not yet proposed similar terms, instead discussing a "generous" revenue split. Facebook now touts more than 1 billion users worldwide, with roughly 600 million accessing its services via mobile. Foursquare updates privacy policy, requires users to share full names Foursquare has updated its privacy policy, allowing businesses to view information longer about users who checkin to their establishments. In addition, foursquare is instituting a new policy that requires users to share their full name with each check-in. "Currently, Foursquare sometimes shows your full name and sometimes shows your first name and last initial ("John Smith" vs. "John S.")..with this change, full names are going to be public," said foursquare in Privacy 101, a new page explaining the changes it will begin implementing Jan. 28. Foursquare suggests that users who do not want to share their full names edit the name associated with their account. Foursquare only requires users to provide their first name. The company explained that this change will make it easier for users to find other friends using the service. Businesses previously were able to view information about visitors who had checked in using foursquare in the past 3 hours. The update states that the window of time for businesses to view this information has increased, but foursquare did not reveal further details. Foursquare isn't the only company to unveil a new privacy policy. Instagram and Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) came under fire when Instagram announced it would begin sharing location data, usage data and device identifiers with other services associated with Facebook. Following consumer outcry over the proposed changes, Instagram rescinded its plans to institute changes to its privacy policy. Foursquare also announced that it had reached 3 billion check-ins.
