Social media integration is critical, yet time-consuming for developers Social media integration is quickly becoming a critical part of the app experience as Facebook and Twitter increase their presence on mobile devices. According to a research study published by Nielsen and NM Incite last month, the use of social media mobile apps grew 63 percent in 2012 compared with the same period the previous year. However, having to manually write the code that will authenticate users via third-party services, sync friend and profile data and share it with those services can be a time-consuming task. A San Francisco-based startup, Singly, wants to change that and last month it released an SDK into open beta that promises to accelerate the process in a matter of hours. Rumor Mill: Sprint to launch Sprint-branded prepaid service Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) will launch its own branded prepaid service later this month, according to the blog Android Police. The move would add another layer to Sprint's multi-pronged prepaid strategy. According to the blog, which cited promotional material it received, Sprint will introduce the Sprint As You Go prepaid brand Jan. 25. The brand will compete with Sprint's Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile brands and will offer two plans: a $70 per month plan for smartphones offering unlimited voice, texting and Web access, and a $50 per month plan for feature phones. However, the plans do not include EV-DO data roaming, according to the promotional materials. A Sprint spokeswoman declined to comment. There are only two smartphones that will work with the plans, the blog said: the LG Optimus Elite for $150 and the Samsung Victory for $250. Neither of those devices appears to have support for Sprint's burgeoning LTE network. On the postpaid side, Sprint currently sells high-end, LTE-capable devices like the Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC Evo 4G LTE. The plan could be a way for Sprint to get out in front of the combined prepaid offerings T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) will bring to the market if their merger is approved later this year. Flat-rate player MetroPCS has indicated it plans to use T-Mobile's network to expand its brand nationwide after the merger closes. The Sprint As You Go plan will also compete with Sprint's existing prepaid plans. Sprint's prepaid offerings stretch across the Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Assurance Wireless brands. Sprint also offers prepaid services through a number of MVNOs including Ting, republic wireless and others. It's unclear whether the Sprint As You Go prepaid service will throttle users' data speeds. Starting this year both Boost and Virgin will throttle the data speeds of customers who exceed 2.5 GB of data usage per month. Further, Boost and Virgin support smartphones that run on Clearwire's (NASDAQ:CLWR) mobile WiMAX network, and are rumored to be ready to support devices that run on Sprint's LTE network. In the third quarter Sprint added a net total of 19,000 prepaid customers. However, that included net additions of 459,000 prepaid Sprint platform customers, and was offset by net losses of 440,000 prepaid Nextel platform customers. Sprint is shutting down the Nextel iDEN network this year and expects to continue to lose Nextel customers as it does so, though the company is working to migrate those subscribers to its CDMA network. CTIA's newly merged show will conflict with CCA's annual event in 2014 CTIA's new "super" wireless industry event that will debut Sept. 9-11, 2014, will be going head-to-head with the Competitive Carrier Association's annual event, which is scheduled on the same dates also in Las Vegas. The CTIA show will occur at the Sands Convention Center and the CCA event will be held at the Cosmopolitan Hotel. Although the CCA event is typically much smaller than the CTIA show, the trade association's conference has become more important with operators over the past few years. CCA has morphed from being a small trade group primarily dedicated to small, rural operators into a powerful lobbying association that champions wireless operators with fewer than 80 million subscribers--in other words, every U.S. operator except for AT&T (NYSE:T) and Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ). The conflicting shows will likely present a challenge for members of both associations. CCA's membership ranks now include Tier 1 operators such as Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) and T-Mobile USA, as well as newcomer Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR). In addition, many of CCA's board members are also members of CTIA's board of directors, including Pat Riordan, the current CTIA chairman, and Mary Dillon, the president and CEO of U.S. Cellular and the vice chairman of CTIA. Rob Mesirow, CTIA's vice president of operations and show director, said in a statement that the conflicting dates were unavoidable. "Due to the size of the CTIA show there are very few venues that are able to accommodate the event. CTIA chose our 2014 dates by working with our members, exhibitors and the Las Vegas Sands Expo Convention Center. This date was coordinated very carefully with our partners, which we will be announcing over the next few weeks and months," he said. Nevertheless, some believe CTIA's decision to schedule its event at the same time as the CCA annual event was strategic and calculated. Steve Berry, president and CEO of the CCA, said in a statement: "It is very disappointing that CTIA has chosen to move its 2014 trade show to the exact same dates and location of CCA's 2014 Annual Convention. CCA's 2014 convention dates have been confirmed and public for two years, and it is hard to see how this is helpful to the industry, the competitive mobile ecosystem, and ultimately consumers. CCA's membership has grown significantly over the past few years, and our association has made great strides in the policy arena for competitive carriers. AT&T and Verizon--two of CTIA's largest carrier members--are not interested in promoting a healthy, competitive wireless industry and it would come as no surprise if this is an attempt to suppress competitive carriers to ensure their duopoly status." In addition, many vendors, which are accustomed to exhibiting at both trade shows, will now be taxed with having to either choose one event over the other, or divide their teams between the two events. According to Damian Sazama, vice president of corporate and product marketing at Interop Technologies, his company will likely have to modify its plans to accommodate both events. "I'm disappointed that CTIA picked the same week in 2014 for its new consolidated tradeshow as the annual CCA tradeshow, which has been scheduled for two years. This scheduling will force some tough decisions at Interop. We have typically sent the same group of people to both CTIA and CCA tradeshows, and each event has a different objective. We will need to modify our plans," he said in a statement. A similar scheduling conflict occurred in 2001. CTIA scheduled its Wireless IT show for Sept. 10-12, 2001, in San Diego--at the same time PCIA's GlobalXChange annual conference was scheduled in Los Angeles. AT&T's Stephenson: iPhone changed how we think about spectrum AT&T (NYSE:T) CEO Randall Stephenson credits Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone with making the operator realize it needed to change its network architecture and massively boost its spectrum holdings. | Stephenson | AT&T was named as the exclusive distributor for the first iPhone in January 2007, and once customers were able to buy the device, AT&T found itself deluged by data traffic volume that "went beyond any rational expectation we could have ever put together," said Stephenson in a wide-ranging interview with Forbes. The experience led AT&T to begin formulating plans for building a dense cellular grid and acquiring additional spectrum. "It hit us very clearly we were going to have a whole different level of spectrum in our business, in our portfolio, than anybody had ever anticipated," said Stephenson, who added that over the next 18 months, AT&T spent somewhere around $9 billion for additional spectrum licenses. Spectrum was at the heart of AT&T's effort to acquire T-Mobile USA in a deal that was eventually canceled in December 2011. AT&T continued its hunt for spectrum during 2012, leading it to pursue spectrum in the AWS and repurposed 2.3 GHz WCS bands. In late December, the FCC approved AT&T's effort to acquire AWS and WCS frequencies via multiple deals the company had assembled throughout the year. AT&T's CEO also addressed the company's recently announced $14 billion Project Velocity IP (or VIP) investment path for wireless and wireline. In early November, the operator said it would commit $8 billion to significantly expand its wireless broadband networks and $6 billion to do the same for its wireline footprint. Ironically, the more wireless-focused AT&T becomes, the more it has had to focus on its wireline business, which provides crucial backhaul. "Basically all you're doing is building this big massive fixed-line network with wireless antenna's hanging on the end of it. So the ability to have all of this fiber deployed around the country is really powerful," said Stephenson. Verizon device with support for AWS LTE approved by FCC A Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) device with support for LTE in the 1700 MHz AWS band received approval from the FCC, perhaps presaging a larger wave of Verizon devices that can support the carrier's AWS spectrum licenses. The device, an unannounced Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, received approval from the FCC with support for not only Verizon's normal 700 MHz Upper C Block spectrum (Band 13), but also 1700 MHz AWS spectrum (Band 4). Verizon added to its existing AWS spectrum holdings with the purchase last year of $3.9 billion worth of AWS spectrum licenses from Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks and Cox Communications. A Verizon spokeswoman declined to comment on the device or when Verizon will introduce LTE devices that support AWS spectrum. Verizon has indicated it plans to use AWS spectrum to augment its existing LTE network, which runs on its 700 MHz spectrum. In November Verizon Communications CFO Fran Shammo indicated that Verizon expects to complete its initial LTE deployment by the middle of this year, six months earlier than originally anticipated. In October, Verizon Wireless CTO Nicola Palmer gave some details on how Verizon would fold AWS into its LTE network. She said the carrier plans to add support for its AWS spectrum to its existing 700 MHz LTE cell sites by the middle or end of this year. "We've already started getting ready for that," she said. "Technical trials are underway." The addition of AWS spectrum to Verizon's LTE network could improve both the speed of the network and its capacity. Other carriers are also gravitating toward AWS spectrum for LTE. T-Mobile USA is refarming its spectrum holdings and will deploy LTE on its AWS spectrum this year. AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) has also indicated it will use AWS for LTE to augment its 700 MHZ LTE network, though the carrier also intends to use 2.3 GHz WCS spectrum for LTE in the years ahead. Canonical promises Ubuntu smartphones in 2014 Canonical, which makes a Linux-based computer operating system called Ubuntu, announced it will release versions of Ubuntu for low- and high-end smartphones, and the company said it expects phones running the platform to be commercially available sometime next year. | Click here for a video showing Ubuntu for phone in action. | Ubuntu joins an already intensely crowded market for smartphone operating systems that includes Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone, Tizen, the Firefox mobile OS, Jolla's Sailfish, Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry 10 and other platforms. "This is obviously a very hotly contested segment," explained Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu and vice president of products at Canonical, in a conference call with reporters announcing the company's plans. "We have had a series of private conversations with key members of the (wireless) industry, both with mobile operators and OEMs. … We do have ample evidence of a high level of interest in a fresh face at the table." Shuttleworth argued that there is room in the market for another player, and he said the approach Canonical is taking with Ubuntu for phones will set it apart in the market. Specifically, Shuttleworth explained that Ubuntu for phones is essentially the same version of the Linux-based OS that Canonical offers for desktop and laptop computers, tablets and TVs. "We think that our vision, which is so powerfully convergent, is somewhat unique," he explained. A key selling point of Ubuntu for phones is that the high-end version will allow users to plug their phone into a PC and run the full desktop version of Ubuntu. Perhaps more importantly, Shuttleworth said that a number of computer makers and wireless carriers have already evaluated Ubuntu for phones and have expressed interest in building products using the platform. Indeed, PC OEMs including Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo all sell Ubuntu-powered computers; Canonical said there are currently over 20 million desktop PCs running the OS today, and that in 2014 it expects that close to 10 percent of the world's new desktops and laptops will ship with Ubuntu. Further, Canonical has already put its toe into the mobile waters. The company in 2011 released its "Ubuntu for Android" product for handset makers. When installed into Android phones, the product allows users to connect their phone to a computer to run a full Ubuntu system. Shuttleworth said that at least one major smartphone maker plans to sell a phone with Canonical's "Ubuntu for Android" in 2013, though he declinded to name the vendor. As for Canonical's new Ubuntu for phones platform, the operating system appears to be a mix between RIM's BlackBerry 10 and the webOS platform from Palm. Ubuntu for phones allows users to navigate through the platform by swiping from one side of their screen to another: swiping from the left brings up a list of favorite apps, swiping from the right navigates to the most recently used app and swiping from the bottom brings up each app's menu. For handset makers, Canonical said its Ubuntu for phones can run on Intel- or ARM-based chipsets, and the company said the platform relies on the Android Board Support Package, which Canonical said will allow Android smartphone makers to easily install Ubuntu into their products with a "trivial" amount of work. For wireless carriers, Canonical said that "operators have room to enhance Ubuntu with their own services, content, apps and branding without breaking compatibility with the broader Ubuntu app ecosystem." And for developers, Canonical said Ubuntu for phones supports HTML5 apps as well as native Linux apps. "We are very respectful of the challenges we face," noted Shuttleworth, adding: "We've seen phenominal interest in this." Shuttleworth said that Firefox's mobile OS, Tizen and Android represent the most direct competition for Ubuntu for phones, since each of those platforms are offered for free to handset makers. Already Samsung has promised to release Tizen phones in 2013, and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) has said it will support Tizen and Mozilla's Firefox mobile OS.
