Special Report: 2012: A year of big stories and bigger trends To FierceIPTV editor Jim Barthold, a top story is something that affects not only the year in which it occurred but more importantly offers a glimpse of things to come. Thus, when asked to come up with 2012's top stories in the IPTV space, he stepped back and took a longer look at what it all meant. It helped that no story in 2012 demanded attention; many were just part of ongoing trends that will evolve over time, he predicts. Read more Follow @FierceEntComm on Twitter! After all, CES is the largest "consumer electronics" show, not the largest enterprise communications show. But CES, because of its size, encompasses many technologies and services outside the traditional consumer electronics market. And BYOD is bringing many consumer technologies into the enterprise. That is why I'm traveling to Las Vegas next week to cover the show. Certainly, there will be a fair share of cool consumer gadgets. But as the business world increasingly goes BYOD, consumer devices are becoming enterprise devices, whether IT managers want them or not. New mobile apps will no doubt abound at the show, even though Microsoft and Apple won't be attending this year. Certainly, apps for the Windows Phone 8 and Surface tablet, as well as the iPhone and iPad, will be plentiful at the show. Broadband as well as connected vehicles will have their own track at CES, evidence of the blurring line between consumer and enterprise communications. Other topics of interest to enterprises include near-field communications (NFC), wireless power products, mobile chip developments, data storage, social media, and IP-based TV. HP mulls asset sales in aftermath of Autonomy debacle HP (NYSE: HPQ) is considering selling off assets and businesses to help it climb out of the financial hole exacerbated by problems at its recently acquired big data analytics firm Autonomy. HP admitted it may have to sell the businesses "at a price or on terms that are less desirable than we had anticipated," according to the company's annual 10-K regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The company did not disclose the units it is considering selling, although there has been discussion of HP selling its PC business. CEO Meg Whitman's predecessor, Leo Apotheker, proposed selling off the PC unit and focusing on software and services. Whitman, however, has reaffirmed her intention of keeping the PC business, perhaps merging it with the company's printer business. HP's financial troubles are well-known and led to Apotheker's departure from the company last year. Before he left, however, he arranged the $11 billion purchase of big data analytics firm Autonomy. That purchase has been an albatross around the neck of Whitman. In its 2012 third quarter financial results, HP said it was taking an $8.8 billion "noncash impairment charge" related to its acquisition of Autonomy earlier in the year. The charge forced HP to report a staggering $6.9 billion net loss for the quarter. HP accused Autonomy's management, particularly the firm's founder Mike Lynch, of using "accounting improprieties, misrepresentations and disclosure failures to inflate the underlying financial metrics of the company, prior to Autonomy's acquisition by HP." In its 10-K filing, HP said the Department of Justice (DoJ) is investigating HP allegations that Autonomy management cooked the books to inflate its financial performance prior to being acquired by the IT behemoth. The DoJ joins the SEC and the UK Serious Fraud Office in investing HP's charges. Lynch has disputed HP's allegations, saying Autonomy's financial troubles were the result of mismanagement by HP after the acquisition. "Simply put these allegations are false, and in the absence of further detail we cannot understand what HP believes to be the basis for them," Lynch said in a statement quoted by Reuters. "We continue to reject these allegations in the strongest possible terms. Autonomy's financial accounts were properly maintained in accordance with applicable regulations, fully audited by Deloitte and available to HP during the due diligence process," he added. The controversy has not helped HP's stock price, which declined 46 percent last year. However, HP's stock this week has benefited from the overall stock bump that followed the passage of U.S. legislation to avoid the "fiscal cliff," jumping from $13.70 at the close of trading on Monday to $15.00 at close of trading Wednesday. Cisco's stock gets bump from positive analyst assessments RBC Capital analyst Mark Sue has raised his rating on Cisco's (Nasdaq: CSCO) stock from "sector perform" to "outperform" and set a share price target of $24, up from $21, according to a report by Forbes writer Eric Savitz. In addition, MKM Partners named Cisco as a top stock pick for 2013 because the firm is "well positioned to define the next generation of holistic Intelligent Networks." The news, along with the general Wall Street uptick from the U.S. fiscal cliff deal reached this week, bumped up Cisco's stock to around $20.45 in mid-morning trading. Sue provided four reasons for his rating adjustment: firming visibility to forward estimates, gross margin stabilization, improving execution, and favorable risk/reward. "Many of the negative issues related to Cisco have subsided. Cisco's core markets are no longer under attack from Huawei, HP and Juniper and Cisco's market shares have rebounded and stabilized. Cisco has also improved its sales execution and refocused its engineering talent…we believe another $1 billion can be further reduced from Cisco's cost structure which gives us added visibility to our forward earnings estimates," Sue wrote in the report quoted by Forbes. Certainly Sue's optimism is reflected in Cisco's third quarter financial performance. The company posted an 18 percent year-over-year increase in net income, reaching $2.1 billion for the quarter. The high-tech behemoth also posted healthy revenue of $11.9 billion in the most recent quarter, up 5.5 percent from the $11.3 billion reported in the same quarter in the previous year. The company was able to generate $2.5 billion in cash from operations in the latest quarter. In addition, Cisco is aggressively diversifying out of its shrinking core switching and router business. In November alone, Cisco acquired network traffic management firm Cariden Technologies for $141 million, cloud networking firm Meraki for $1.2 billion and the data center software firm Cloupia for $125 million. U.S. VoIP market generates $15 billion in annual revenue The U.S. VoIP market has experienced 16.7 percent annual growth rate over the last five years and generates $15 billion in annual revenue, according to IBISWorld's VoIP in the US report. A full 65 percent of VoIP users in the United States get their VoIP service through cable companies such as Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Cox, and Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC). "Cable companies able to bundle VoIP service with cable service will fare best in consumer markets in the coming five years, while businesses will slowly but surely turn to VoIP for voice needs," according to the report. IBISWorld expects the increasing deployment of 4G mobile data networks to fuel continued growth in the VoIP market. In addition, Juniper Research recently predicted that mobile VoIP users would reach 1 billion by 2017. An increasing portion of VoIP customers are small and medium size businesses and enterprises. T. J. McCue, a contributor to Forbes magazine, estimates that VoIP technology has saved companies "millions of dollars" in phone charges. Perhaps sensing the increasing popularity of VoIP, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) announced it is extending its free VoIP calling offering from Gmail in the United States and Canada through 2013. "Many of you call phones from Gmail to easily connect with friends and family. If you're in the US and Canada, you'll continue to be able to make free domestic calls through 2013. Plus, in most countries, you can still call the rest of the world from Gmail at insanely low rates," wrote Mayur Kamat, Gmail product manager, in a blog. Check Point, Fortinet gain on network security appliance leader Cisco Check Point (Nasdaq: CHKP) and Fortinet (Nasdaq: FTNT) both posted double-digit year-over-year revenue growth in the network security appliance market for the third quarter of 2012, gaining market share on Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) and Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), according to stats released this week by IDC. The network security appliance market includes firewalls, virtual private networks (VPNs), unified threat management, intrusion detection systems and intrusion prevention systems (IPS), as well as web and messaging security. John Grady, research manager for security products at IDC, attributed the disappointing showing of Cisco and Juniper to delays in refreshing their product lines. "Cisco's addressed this with their new ASA 5500-X lines, which are just beginning to ramp up sales wise now. Because of Juniper's focus on the high-end service provider and telco segments, their business tends to be more up and down. They've definitely had some execution issues as well, but the longer sales cycles haven't helped," Grady told FierceEnterpriseCommunications. On the other hand, Check Point has seen "very good traction with their new appliance line-up and with their large installed base they're benefiting from a lot of follow on revenue. Fortinet continues to do well across the board, especially in more distributed enterprise environments, where their broad product line-up addresses multiple segments of the network," he explained. Cisco maintained its leading position in the market, with 16.2 percent market share in the third quarter, although this was down 1.5 percent from its 17.3 market share in the same quarter last year. Second place Check Point saw its revenue grow 12.8 percent year-over-year, increasing its market share to 12.8 percent in the third quarter, while fourth place Fortinet experienced a healthy 17.2 percent revenue growth year-over-year, pushing its market share to 5.9 percent. Third place Juniper saw its revenue drop 6.4 percent, and its market share shrink to 7.9 percent from 9 percent in the same quarter last year. Rounding out the top five, Intel's (Nasdaq: INT) McAfee saw a respectable 5.3 percent revenue growth, which kept it at a 5.7 percent market share. While Cisco and Juniper struggled in the third quarter, the two companies did experience strong revenue growth in the firewall and virtual private network (VPN) segment, which posted a 7.3 percent year-over-year revenue growth. Network security appliance factory revenue increased 5.7 percent year-over-year to $2 billion in the third quarter, and shipments increased by 1 percent to 499,022 units. In the U.S., factory revenue increased 4.6 percent, fueled by demand from larger enterprises and service providers. However, U.S. shipments decreased 1.2 percent year-over-year. The largest segment, accounting for one-third of network security appliance revenue in the third quarter, was unified threat management (UTM). That segment posted a 24.3 percent year-over-year revenue growth. "Multi-function appliances (typically counted under the UTM label in our taxonomy) are expected to see by far the strongest growth in the market. Traditional firewalls and stand-alone VPN gateways will decline. IPS will see some growth, but not to the level of UTM. There's still a use case for stand-alone IPS. We're seeing a move towards advanced threat protection on the IPS platform, and data center specific deployments will both serve to buoy the market a bit," Grady observed. In the face of increasing attacks against their networks, enterprises are increasing their spending on network security, according to a survey of chief information officers (CIOs) conducted by Gartner last year. A full 45 percent of CIOs surveyed said they expected a security budget increase, while 50 percent said they expected their security budgets to remain the same. Grady agreed that the increasing attacks have fueled enterprise interest in security products. "With the increasing number of high-profile breaches, security is much more top of mind for all executives, not just IT and security specific personnel. This has definitely helped security become a more strategic investment, even with overall budgets somewhat constrained as they are," he concluded. Mexican enterprises, SMBs turn to UCC products, says Frost & Sullivan Revenues from the sale of unified communications and collaboration (UCC) products in the Mexican market could double over the next five years, predicts Frost & Sullivan. The research firm said the sale of VoIP and videoconferencing products in Mexico will spur UCC revenues as firms look to replace legacy communications systems. UCC revenues could increase from $273.3 million last year to $478.2 million in 2018. "Employees demand communication and collaboration tools that are similar to or better than what they are familiar with outside work. With the proliferation of smartphones and tablets, mobile UC applications that enable enterprises to meet employee needs are fast becoming popular," observed Francisco Rizzo, research analyst with Frost & Sullivan. Rizzo noted that there is a greater awareness of UCC benefits among large Mexican firms, and there are efforts by UCC vendors to expand their channel partnerships and improve communications infrastructure. Competition to secure large enterprise customers is increasing among UCC vendors, he added. On the small and medium business (SMB) side, cloud-based UCC products are taking hold, spurred by the lower up-front costs of a cloud-based solution versus an on-premise system. "To remain competitive, participants must look for new sales opportunities and develop strategies to cater to the needs of the untapped SMB market in particular. It is essential to build UCC systems that also offer cloud-based solutions," noted Rizzo. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which reduces trade and investment barriers among the United States, Mexico and Canada, is no doubt helping U.S.-based UCC vendors make in-roads to the Mexican market. For example, Patton, a Maryland-based supplier of VoIP equipment, saw its sales to Mexico and Canada double between 1992 and 1994 as a result of NAFTA, according to a report by TMCnet. That growth has continued, as the company averaged more than $1 million in annual sales to Mexico and Canada between 2000 and 2011.
