NCTA explores dropping 'cable' from brand The National Cable & Telecommunications Association is exploring the idea of dropping the word "cable" from its brand, according to a recent trademark filing. The lobbying group, which represents major cable MSOs, programmers and technology vendors, filed a trademark application for the brand "NCTA The Internet and Television Association" on Dec. 27, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Formerly known as the National Cable Television Association, NCTA added the word telecommunications to its brand in 2001, as its members began adding telephone and high-speed Internet services to their portfolios. High-speed Internet access has become the fastest growing product for Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and other NCTA members. That business appears to be the focus of the new brand that NCTA is considering. "The trademark filing is nothing more than exploring some ideas for the NCTA brand," NCTA spokesman Brian Dietz told FierceCable on Friday. In years past, NCTA focused much of its lobbying efforts on staving off regulation of cable programming rates. The association, which is led by former FCC chairman Michael Powell, has focused more on issues related to the high-speed Internet business during the last few years, including network neutrality and usage-based broadband pricing. According to the trademark filing, NCTA said the new brand could be used for "association services, namely, promoting the interests of the association's members in the broadband Internet, television, telephony, and cable-provided communications industries." 2012 Year in Review: Usage-based broadband launched by Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Suddenlink Related articles: Powell: Cable is on cusp of innovation that will revolutionize the industry FCC chairman 'concerned' about usage-based broadband pricing Read more about: Ncta back to top | | This week's sponsor is Kontagent. | | Whitepaper: 5 Lessons on Driving More Revenue, Loyalty and Lifetime Value to Your Mobile Apps Learn the five primary lessons that apply to 99% of businesses trying to succeed in the mobile app space. Time Warner Cable still working on streaming video to Samsung, Sony TVs Two years after Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) announced it would allow subscribers to watch cable programing on TVs from Samsung and Sony without using a cable set-top, the nation's second largest cable MSO said it is still working on streaming video to connected TVs. In January 2011, Time Warner Cable announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that it would allow subscribers to watch live TV and DVR programming through connected TVs from Samsung. "Starting this year, we will be working with Samsung to give our customers the full navigation experience and access to all of the channels they watch right now on the Samsung Smart TV," Jeff Simmermon, Time Warner Cable's director of digital communications, wrote in a blog post at the time. Last May, Time Warner Cable announced that subscribers could access HBO Go on Samsung TVs. But subscribers still can't access its complete digital cable lineup on connected TVs. "We continue to work with Samsung and other CE device providers, but we have nothing definitive to announce with Samsung at this time," Time Warner Cable spokesman Justin Venech told FierceCable on Friday. Sony also announced at CES in 2011 that Time Warner Cable subscribers would be able to access cable programming through its connected TVs. But that product, which was scheduled to debut in 2011, still hasn't launched. Look for Samsung, Sony and other CE manufacturers to update plans to deliver cable programming to connected TVs next week at the 2013 CES, which kicks off on Tuesday. Sony said to be mulling own pay TV service in U.S. Even as cable operators continue to leak video subscribers and IPTV providers tread water in the pay TV space, it appears that yet another player--Sony, of all companies--thinks there's money to be made in selling television. According to a story in Variety, the consumer electronics giant is "in active negotiations with at least two major content companies" about increasing the number of channels they would provide for a package that "could roll out in the U.S. later this year." The situation is tenuous, as evidenced by the fact that Sony will not be announcing it--as far as anyone knows--at next week's CES in Las Vegas and a Sony spokesman told the publication he would not comment on "rumors or speculation." That speculation includes the belief that the service would be a package of linear channels similar to what other MVPDs provide, but it would, of course, be delivered via a broadband connection, no doubt making use of Sony Bravia smart TVs, PlayStation 3 gaming devices and Blu-ray players. In this regard, Sony is apparently thinking along the same lines as Intel, which is also said to be developing a pay TV service and accompanying hardware, according to multiple reports. In Sony's case, the service would be what's often called a "virtual MSO," mirroring the cable TV model but without the need to build infrastructure to residential customers who would, instead, leverage their cable/telco-provided broadband connections. The service might just be a reaction to a space where Sony competitors like Nintendo and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) are making inroads with MVPDs and their gaming devices. On top of that, there are also the never-ending sagas of Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) TV, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) TV and, more recently, the aforementioned Intel. Still, as any MVPD can tell you, it costs money to get and aggregate content, and even a company with pockets as deep as Sony might be cowed into submission. "[T]here is some skepticism that the conglom will make it to market, but so far it has been as serious as any other partner at the negotiation table," the Variety piece reported. Sony has one thing going for it: Sony Pictures Entertainment, which now runs the Sony Movie Channel and Crackle. Whether that's enough or not will undoubtedly be the subject of a story that could conceivably run until CES 2014. Suddenlink, Fox reach last-minute carriage deal Hours before their carriage deal was set to expire, Fox Networks and Suddenlink Communications said late Thursday that they had "reached an agreement in principle." The deal allows Suddenlink to continue carrying FX, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo Wild, Speed, Fuel TV, Fox Soccer, Fox Movie Channel, Fox Deportes, Fox College Sports and regional sports networks. The agreement also includes retransmission-consent for Fox owned-and-operated TV stations. "We look forward to finalizing the agreement and are pleased that we could come to terms without any service interruption for Suddenlink customers and our loyal Fox viewers," Fox and Suddenlink said in a joint statement. Chase Carey, the COO of Fox parent News Corp. (Nasdaq: NWSA), has been pushing Fox to include multiplatform distribution terms in its deals with cable and satellite affiliates. Last year, Fox pulled all full-length TV series from Fox.com and said it would only allow viewers from pay TV providers that sign an authentication deal with Fox to watch its programming online. ACA books Pai, Barrow to speak at Washington Summit FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai and Rep.
