Today's Top News

1. DirecTV picks up 100,000 subscribers in Q4 2012

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) gained 100,000 net subscriber additions in the fourth quarter, CEO Mike White said at a Citi conference last week.

White said DirecTV's subscriber growth was "significantly above where we thought we would be." He noted the company expected it would lose more subscribers after Chinese language programming supplier Jadeworld moved its networks from DirecTV to rival Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) in November.

But DirecTV's fourth-quarter subscriber growth did slow compared to previous years. The top satellite TV provider picked up 125,000 net new subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2011 and 289,000 new subscribers during the fourth quarter of 2010.

White said DirecTV is stepping up efforts to reduce subscriber churn and improve profit margins by raising the prices on its subscription video packages and reducing operating expenses. DirecTV announced recently that it would hike subscription fees by an average of 4.5 percent. The company has also started charging subscribers in markets such as Los Angeles that feature more than one regional sports network monthly surcharges of $3.

White said DirecTV will release its fourth-quarter earnings report in February.

2. GetGlue kills plan to merge with social TV rival Viggle

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Less than two months after Viggle agreed to buy social TV rival GetGlue for $80 million in stock and cash, GetGlue founder Alex Iskold announced on Sunday that the company decided to scrap the deal.

"We are moving forward as an independent company," Iskold wrote in a blog post, without detailing why he decided to kill the merger.

Viggle also didn't say why the deal was called off. CEO Robert Sillerman said in a statement released Monday that the company is pleased with its "positive momentum," and that the termination of the merger agreement was "cordial."

But it appears Viggle may have found it challenging to finance the deal. The company disclosed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Friday that its board of directors approved increasing its line of credit from $15 million to $20 million. Sillerman has been financing Viggle's operations through Sillerman Investment Company LLC, according to SEC filings. Viggle reported in November that it posted a net loss of $19.4 million in the third quarter of 2012, compared to a net loss of $33.9 million in the third quarter of 2011.

3. Hughes ships record number of broadband satellite terminals

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Hughes Network Systems said Monday it shipped more than 487,000 broadband satellite terminals worldwide last year, indicating that it is seeing a demand in rural markets for its new Gen4 high-speed Internet service.

Charging subscribers $99 monthly for download speeds of 15 Mbps, Hughes launched the Gen4 service in October. The company, which is owned by EchoStar, has deals with both DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) and Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) that allow the satellite TV providers to sell broadband Internet access to their subscribers. Hughes also signed a wholesale agreement with rural telco Frontier Communications (Nasdaq: FTR) last summer.

Hughes said it has seen accelerated sales of broadband satellite terminals in North America since the launch of the Gen4 service, noting that it shipped more than 200,000 HT (high throughput) terminals during the fourth quarter.

4. Comcast recruiting women for field technician positions

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Comcast's (Nasdaq: CMCSA) New England division is stepping up efforts to recruit women to take jobs at the company as field technicians.

The MSO said it is teaming up with nonprofit group Vermont Works for Women to develop a six-week program that includes training in equipment, installation, customer service and physical conditioning. Comcast employs just three female field technicians in New England, while it counts more than 500 men in field technician positions, Rachel Jolly, director of women's programs at Vermont Works, told the Rutland Herald.

5. Cable critic Jay Rockefeller to retire from Senate

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), the Senate Commerce Committee chairman and longtime critic of cable operators and programmers, said he won't seek reelection in 2014.

Rockefeller argued at a hearing last July that cable and satellite TV subscribers should receive rebates when they lose programming as a result of disputes between broadcasters and pay TV distributors involving retransmission-consent fees. "Rates continue to go faster than inflation, year in, year out. They [consumers] are tired of it. I am tired of it," Rockefeller said.

American Cable Association CEO Matt Polka, who has been lobbying for retransmission-consent reform, praised Rockefeller. Polka said in a statement that Rockefeller "has been a constant champion to ensure consumers have access to competitive communications markets and who speaks out when market power threatens the public interest."
