Industry Voices: Paolini: M2M and the Internet of the pampered self The phones of CES 2013 LAS VEGAS--As the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show winds down, it's time to evaluate the devices that came out of the show. As expected, the market's big players did not offer much in the way of new hardware. Nokia, Samsung and Research In Motion all decided to withhold large smartphone announcements for another day, possibly at future trade shows or even their own media events. Into that void stepped a number of up-and-coming companies, including Huawei, ZTE and TCL's Alcatel One Touch. Thus, it's worth taking a look back at the phones that were announced during this year's CES and to discuss what makes them important (or not important, as the case may be). Analysts push back against reports of weak iPhone 5 demand Analysts and industry observers moved to counter reports that a cutback in Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) orders for iPhone 5 components indicated a drop in demand for the device. The reports, first from Japan's Nikkei and then also from the Wall Street Journal, caused Apple's stock to drop 3.6 percent yesterday. In the aftermath of the reports, analysts said that the reports might not be accurate. "As far as we can tell, iPhone 5 demand remains robust," Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu wrote in a research note to clients, according to CNET. Similarly, Baird analyst William Power wrote that he was "actually raising our calendar fourth quarter iPhone forecast slightly," and that "most demand indicators remain favorable." The reports said that Apple cut its orders for screens for the new gadget from suppliers like Sharp and LG by about half of what it had previously planned for the first quarter of 2013. Nikkei reported that Apple dropped its original target of 65 million screens to about half that, citing an unidentified senior executive at a component maker it didn't name. Some analysts said in the aftermath of the reports that any decline in demand for the iPhone 5 so soon after its release last fall is a sign that Apple needs to expand its potential market and go after price-conscious consumers with a lower-cost model. Recent reports have indicated Apple is designing a low-cost iPhone. Apple declined to comment, according to the New York Times. Independent mobile analyst Tero Kuittinen noted in BGR that the iPhone 5 and the latest iPod touch both use the same screen. He wrote that the latest estimates for iPhone sales during the December quarter averaged around 52 million units and that perhaps the iPhone 5 portion of this may be anything from 30 to 40 million. In the first quarter, he wrote, Phone 5 unit sales might be 25 to 35 million units and that sales of the latest iPod touch could add another 4 million Retina display screens to Apple's orders. "So if the most likely number of 4-inch screens Apple is reasonably expected to sell in March quarter is around 30 to 40 million units, why did Nikkei publish a report stating that Apple had halved its display orders for the quarter from 65 million units?" wrote Kuittinen, who is also vice president of Alekstra, a company that helps people manage wireless bills. "Nikkei was quite specific about the 65 million number. And it clearly tied it to iPhone 5 component orders, not total iPhone or iPhone 5 and iPod touch orders. In what world did Apple expect to order components for 65 million iPhone 5 handsets in the seasonally soft March quarter?" Other analysts also rejected the reports' claims. NPD DisplaySearch analyst Paul Semenza told the NYT that Apple had expected to order 19 million displays for the iPhone 5 but cut the order to 11 million to 14 million displays. Semenza cited sources in Apple's supply chain for the figures. "The reports claiming 65 million displays for next quarter make little sense; the reports that claim component orders have been 'halved' but without any specific numbers can't be verified three months from now when Apple reports its actual iPhone sales for the coming quarter," Daring Fireball blogger and Apple observer John Gruber wrote. "In the meantime, of course, Apple's stock took a beating today on these reports. If you don't smell stock manipulation here, I have a bridge to sell you." Apple will report its earnings for the December quarter Jan. 23. PTel ditches Sprint for T-Mobile, plans ad-subsidized wireless service PTel Mobile, an MVNO that launched in 2001, dumped Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) as its host carrier in favor of T-Mobile USA. PTel executive Omar Abhari said the move allows the MVNO to expand its handset options, offer lower pricing and provide inventive services like advertising-subsidized wireless service. "Our play was geared toward getting onto GSM," explained Abhari, who is the senior vice president of operations for PlatinumTel Communications, the parent company of PTel Mobile. "It (GSM) is more of a global technology. The handsets have always been an issue in the CDMA world." And, Abhari added, "The GSM pricing is currently better." Abhari said PTel Mobile launched in 2001 on Cingular's TDMA service. The company in 2004 moved to Sprint's network in order to offer data and SMS services, and to improve its overall offering. Now, with the company's switch to T-Mobile, which occurred in December, PTel is lowering its service pricing and expanding its handset offerings. Specifically, Abhari said PTel now offers unlimited talking, texting and 250 MB of high-speed data for $40 per month (data speeds after 250 MB are throttled). Previously the company offered unlimited talking and texting and 250 MB of data for $45 per month--and after 250 MB of data, subscribers' data services were simply cut off. On the high end, Abhari said PTel now offers unlimited talking and texting and 2 GB of high-speed data for $50 (data speeds after 2 GB are slowed). Previously the company offered unlimited talking and texting and 1 GB of data for $55, and users' data service was shut off after they consumed 1 GB of data. Abhari said PTel's per-minute pricing remains unchanged at 5 cents per minute. As for handsets, Abhari said PTel can now offer phones from the likes of HTC, Alcatel and Huawei, whereas before the company was limited to suppliers including LG and Kyocera. Further, the company can now offer a GSM-based, bring-your-own-device plan. "We want to find and bring some of the best (handset) brands to our customers," Abhari said. "That now is an option, it was never an option before." Interestingly, PTel Mobile is also in the process of designing some new services. Next month Abhari said PTel will launch a new MVNO brand, Giv Mobile. Giv will offer the same prices and services as PTel, but 8 percent of its revenues will be directed to the charity of a subscriber's choice. Giv Mobile is "a project that we've been working on for some time," Abhari said, adding that the company will work to make Giv Mobile more of a community than a service by allowing subscribers to suggest new charities that could be added to a list of pre-screened organizations that users can direct funds toward. Further, Abhari said that PTel Mobile is working on an advertising-subsidized service that will launch either at the end of the third quarter or sometime in the fourth quarter. Abhari said the technology is still being developed, but the company hopes to allow users to opt in to advertisements and in exchange get a discount on the cost of their wireless service. "There's a very unique opportunity on mobile" to innovate in advertising, Abhari said. Sprint, Nokia ignoring each other on Windows Phone - for now Sprint Nextel's (NYSE:S) major announcement last week during the Consumer Electronics Show was that it will launch its first Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 8 smartphones by the summer from HTC and Samsung. Left off that list was Windows Phone's biggest supporter, Nokia (NYSE:NOK)--and that seems to be the way it will stay for a while. "We selected partners that have strong CDMA and Sprint roots for our first Windows Phone 8 products," Sprint spokesman Mark Elliott told FierceWireless. He declined to comment on whether Sprint will eventually launch Nokia's Lumia Windows Phones. Nokia, meanwhile, seems content to not go after a partnership with Sprint for the moment. Chris Weber, Nokia's executive vice president of sales and marketing, told FierceWireless that the company is focused on building its existing relationships with U.S. carriers Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) and T-Mobile USA, rather than on expanding to more carriers. "We constantly evaluate, in the U.S. market or whatever market, what partners we're with," he said. "Right now our focus is really on broadening the portfolio with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile." Weber said Nokia's goal for 2013 is to have high-end, mid-range and low-end Lumia devices at all of its carrier partners. Nokia declined to comment beyond Weber's remarks. In one sense, the estrangement of Nokia and Sprint is understandable. Nokia phones have not recently been sold by Sprint, whereas T-Mobile and AT&T (and to a lesser extent Verizon) have sold Nokia phones previously. Further, AT&T and T-Mobile were early supporters of Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. "Nokia had a fairly contentious relationship with most U.S. operators, even ones considered partners," Strategy Analytics analyst Kevin Burden said, explaining Nokia's decision to repair relationships with old partners. "Part of that is working with them and not their competitors." Still, Burden said he was somewhat surprised Sprint was not making a harder push to be Nokia's partner. That said, he noted that perhaps Sprint is waiting for upgraded hardware from Nokia, and is content to get newer Windows Phone devices from HTC and Samsung. "I think there's always the potential that Sprint and Nokia end up working together," he said. "The potential is greater when there's newer models coming out from Nokia." Current Analysis Avi Greengart agreed with Burden's take on why Nokia is partnering with its established U.S. carrier partners. "If Nokia has a major comeback, absolutely they'll end up partnering [with Sprint]," he said. "I think Nokia is being very deliberate," he said, noting that Sprint has a multibillion-dollar commitment to sell Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone. RadioShack ends mobile retail pact with Target RadioShack ended its mobile retail relationship with Target, saying the two companies could not agree to terms that would have created more profit for both parties. RadioShack said that as of April 8 it will no longer help operate Target Mobile in 1,500 Target stores. The deal, which was put in place in 2010, allowed RadioShack to manage Target's postpaid wireless business, but RadioShack did not manage the prepaid business or the wider range of mobile accessories Target sold. The companies had been trying since October 2012 to renegotiate the terms of the partnership with so that it would be profitable to both companies. At that time, RadioShack gave Target notice that would allow RadioShack to exit the pact if an agreement could not be reached. The deal turned into a $38 million loss for RadioShack during the first three quarters of 2012, according to the Wall Street Journal; overall, RadioShack reported a loss of more than $76 million during that period. "In order for RadioShack to have continued this relationship, we needed to establish a new agreement that would be financially appealing to both companies," Telvin Jeffries, a RadioShack executive vice president and general manager of retail services, said in a statement. "Ultimately, we amicably agreed to dissolve the relationship." The deal put a crimp on RadioShack's ability to turn a profit because it could not sell accessories, which tend to have a higher profit margin, according to Scott Tilghman, an analyst at B. Riley Caris. "RadioShack will lose some lower-margin revenue from this," Tilghman told Reuters. Target noted that Brightstar, a leading wireless distributor, and MarketSource, a sales and marketing services company, will take RadioShack's place in April. Alvarion strikes Wi-Fi offload deal with Japanese operator Alvarion said it reached a deal with a Tier 1 Japanese operator to offload the carrier's 3G data traffic to Alvarion's carrier-grade Wi-Fi base stations in Tokyo. Such a strategy could be employed in the future by additional carriers, including those in the United States. Alvarion said it is working with Hitachi Cable Networks on the solution for the carrier, which it did not name. The Wi-Fi base stations will cover major train stations and congested areas in downtown Tokyo business districts. Alvarion said the deployment is the initial phase of a nationwide deployment targeting crowded public spaces where data usage is high. Other operators are turning to carrier-grade Wi-Fi for offload solutions. Wi-Fi will play a crucial role in AT&T's (NYSE: T) multibillion-dollar initiative to increase the density of its wireless network, according to one of the operator's top executives. "Our objective for 2014 is that we won't do any small cell or in-building systems that don't include Wi-Fi," John Donovan, senior executive vice president, AT&T Technology and Network Operations, recently said. That means AT&T's Wi-Fi footprint stands to grow significantly as the operator engages in Project Velocity IP (or VIP), the multibillion program announced last fall under which AT&T will deploy more than 10,000 new macrocells, 40,000 small cells and 1,000 distributed antenna systems (DAS) throughout its service footprint. And AT&T isn't the only carrier looking to Wi-Fi. Other U.S. operators have worked to push cellular traffic onto Wi-Fi networks. Further, cable operators in the United States last year announced a plan to build Wi-Fi networks in cities across the country. The nature of mobile app piracy is that those who perpetuate it do so in a way that makes it particularly challenging to track and evaluate whether they are losing business or merely attracting interest from early adopters. This issue came to a head again earlier this month when Hackulous, a longtime hub for piracy within the iOS community, abruptly announced it was discontinuing operations. Further, Hackulous was not merely an online discussion forum but a service that included its own app, Installous, that could transfer cracked apps to devices running iOS. Article Paolini: M2M and the Internet of the pampered self | Monica Paolini | The Internet of things has a bright future, but growth so far has been painfully slow. But, there are encouraging signs of progress among consumer machine-to-machine (M2M) applications. Consumer applications offer perhaps the most promising source of growth and innovation for M2M because adoption in the consumer market takes place organically, in a more dynamic and competitive environment than, say, in the utilities or health care industry. Individual consumers decide which applications to support with their wallets and the impact of their choices can be felt quickly, with no lengthy strategy reviews or RFP processes. Progress in consumer M2M is driven by innovative ways to seamlessly combine devices, interfaces and functions--which is what is really needed to get users' attention and the growth rates needed for the internet of things to move beyond niche. Wearable, health-tracking devices are an excellent example of this. I have written about the sleep-tracking Zeo, a device that sends your sleep-tracking data to your smartphone, tablet, or PC, where you can access your data through a simple interface that is consistent across devices. A key advantage of devices like the Zeo is that they do not require cellular connectivity, and hence cost less, are smaller and use less power...Continued More Read more about: M2M, Monica Paolini back to top | > Globalstar's New "Wi-Fi" Super Highway - Tuesday, January 22nd, 11:00am EST/8:00 am PST This webinar will discuss the innovative technology, public benefits, and regulatory outlook of providing a new 22 MHz channel under the existing 802.11 IEEE standard.
