1. Time Warner Cable launches 75 Mbps broadband service in Dallas

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) has launched a 75 Mbps high-speed Internet service in Dallas, where it is charging subscribers $90 monthly for the new tier.

The rollout of the "Ultimate 75 Mbps" tier, which was first reported Tuesday by DSL Reports, comes about two months after Time Warner Cable COO Rob Marcus said the MSO would increase its broadband speeds on its standard Internet tiers by 50 percent on cable systems nationwide.

AT&T (NYSE: T), which markets its U-verse TV and Internet service in Dallas, announced in November that it would eventually increase its download speeds to 75 Mbps. Time Warner Cable's speed upgrade could help it stave off competition from the telco.

2. Nielsen report finds cable operators lost 2.7 million households between Q3 2011, Q3 2012

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

The number of wired cable homes dropped by more than 2.7 million between the third quarter of 2011 and the third quarter of 2012, Nielsen said Monday.

Nielsen Cross Platform report TV distributionNielsen disclosed the cable household counts in its latest Cross-Platform Report, which showed that AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and other telcos added about 1.18 million cable homes between the third quarter of 2011 and the third quarter of 2012, growing the number of pay TV homes from telcos to 9.55 million. DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) and Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) picked up about 124,000 homes during the same period, with the companies counting 34.8 million homes combined at the end of the third quarter, Nielsen said.

More consumers are relying on over-the-air antennas to watch TV, with Nielsen reporting there were 11.12 million broadcast-only homes at the end of the third quarter. The number of broadcast-only homes increased by 67,000 compared to the third quarter of 2011, Nielsen said.

Nielsen also reported that the number of broadcast-only homes that subscribe to broadband Internet service increased by 153,000 to 5.26 million between the third quarter of 2011 and the third quarter of 2012. The numbers indicate that more consumers are choosing to cut subscription video programming packages and rely on broadband Internet access to download or stream video.

3. Comcast spending $150 million for 8 percent stake in Arris

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) said Monday that it agreed to spend $150 million to buy 7.85 percent stake in cable technology vendor Arris (Nasdaq: ARRS).

The move comes less than one month after Arris struck a deal to buy Motorola Mobility's set-top business from Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) for $2.35 billion. Arris said the Comcast investment will allow it to increase the amount of cash it will pay Google by $150 million and that it will reduce the amount of stock issued to Google for the Motorola Mobility assets. Google and Comcast will each own about 7.85 percent of Arris stock, the company added.

Comcast has a history of buying or investing in technology vendors whose products it deploys and cable networks that are carried on its systems. The MSO, which acquired NBCUniversal last year, also owns stake in TiVo (Nasdaq: TIVO), video-on-demand advertising technology provider BlackArrow, home automation vendor iControl, targeted advertising technology provider Visible World and home networking technology supplier Entropic Communications.

Arris announced last week that it had developed a home video gateway that could be used to deliver Comcast's Xfinity X1 service. Comcast hasn't yet said when it may deploy the Arris gateways.

"We believe this investment by one of our largest customers is a strong indication of customer support for the Motorola Home acquisition and its potential to accelerate innovation to the benefit of the industry and consumers," Arris CEO Bob Stanzione said in a prepared statement.

Arris stock jumped Tuesday morning on news of the Comcast investment, with its shares trading at $15.89, up 55 cents, or 3.6 percent, at 10:30 a.m. ET. Comcast stock was trading at $39.08, up 16 cents, or 0.41 percent.

4. Rogers to buy Mountain Cablevision and spectrum from Shaw Communications

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Rogers Communications (NYSE: RCI) struck a $700 million deal to buy Mountain Cabevision from fellow Canadian MSO Shaw Communications, along with wireless spectrum and interest in cable network TVtropolis.

Toronto-based Rogers will pick up about 40,000 cable subscribers in Hamilton, Ontario, through the cable system acquisition. About 130 Mountain Cablevision employees will also join the company.

Rogers, which also markets wireless phone and Internet service to subscribers, has an option to buy unused spectrum from Shaw that covers 188 million MHz POPs. If the deal is approved by regulators, it could help Rogers meet increased demand for mobile Internet services in Western Canada, the company said.

"We're investing in spectrum to ensure our customers continue to enjoy the incredibly fast speeds and throughput they crave, while ensuring our continued network leadership," Rogers CEO Nadir Mohamed said in a prepared statement. "We're also strengthening our cable portfolio by acquiring a valuable cable business which complements our existing Ontario cable system allowing us to deliver even more value for our customers and shareholders," he added.

5. CNET acknowledges Dish Network's Hopper won 'Best of CES' award before CBS interceded

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

CNET acknowledged Monday that it planned to award Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) its "Best of CES" award before it was ordered by parent CBS Corp. (NYSE: CBS) to drop Dish from the program because of a lawsuit the broadcaster is waging against Dish related to Hopper's ad-skipping capabilities.

While CNET announced last week that it had pulled Hopper from its awards program because of CBS's litigation with Dish, it didn't disclose at the time that its staffers had actually voted to give Dish the "Best in Show" award. But after The Verge reported Monday that CNET planned to give Dish its top honor and CNET reporter Greg Sandoval announced via Twitter that he was resigning, CNET detailed the activities that prompted it to drop Dish from the program.

CNET staffers voted Wednesday night to give the top honor to Dish but were ordered by CBS to remove Hopper from the awards program, Lindsey Turrentine, the editor-in-chief of CNET Reviews, wrote in an article posted Monday afternoon. CNET wanted to release a report last week that explained it had voted to give the award to Dish, but it was ordered by management at CBS Interactive to stick to a statement drafted by CBS Corp., Turrentine said. "We were in an impossible situation as journalists. The conflict of interest was real--a legal case can impact the bottom line of our company and introduce the possibility of bias--but the circumstances demanded more transparency and not hurried policy," Turrentine added.

CBS is one of several broadcasters that filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Dish last year aimed at forcing it to deactivate AutoHop, a feature on the Hopper that, when activated by subscribers, removes all commercials from primetime programming on CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox.

Dish criticized CNET's move to drop it from the awards program in a statement it issued on Thursday. "We are saddened that CNET's staff is being denied its editorial independence because of CBS' heavy-handed tactics," Dish said in the statement.

CBS said in a statement Monday afternoon that its move block CNET from giving an award to Dish was an "isolated incident," and it insisted that CNET "maintains 100 percent editorial independence."

The Chinese government is requiring that all new homes built in areas where fiber networks are available have a fiber-based broadband connection.
