Mobile payments: User-driven vs. vendor-driven
The gold rush to win the mobile payment race has attracted a lot of different companies, however it's still unclear which ones will succeed at this multi-billion dollar industry. The ecosystem is currently divided into two camps: vendor-driven and user-driven initiatives. Thus, it makes much more sense to compare the players to others within their own camp, and to look at whether that camp at large will succeed. Feature

1. Analysts: Verizon expected to pull ahead of rivals in Q4

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) is expected to lead U.S. wireless carriers in terms of net subscriber additions in the fourth quarter, according to analysts' estimates. However, all operators, including Verizon, will likely see their margins come under pressure as a result of higher subsidy costs for smartphones.

Verizon has already noted that it expects 2.1 million net adds for the fourth quarter, which is above what any other carrier is expected to achieve for the period. Morgan Stanley analysts Simon Flannery, John Mark Warren and Armintas Sinkevicius wrote in a research note that all of those additions--especially of smartphone users--will come at a cost. They said Verizon's wireless EBITDA margin will decline from a record 50 percent in the third quarter of 2012 to 41.5 percent.

Of the 9.8 million smartphones Verizon activated in the fourth quarter, the Morgan Stanley analysts expect Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhones to make up 6 million. The iPhone 5, introduced widely in the fourth quarter, is the first iPhone to run on LTE networks, and Verizon's LTE network coverage--273.5 million POPs, or roughly 89 percent of its U.S. footprint--is far greater than any other carrier, which perhaps gave Verizon an advantage in the period. The analysts said they will be looking for an update on Verizon's Share Everything shared data plans; in mid-October the carrier said more than 13 percent of its customer base was on the new plans.

AT&T (NYSE:T) is also expecting to report a strong quarter for its wireless segment. The carrier said earlier this month that it sold a record 10.2 million smartphones in the fourth quarter. Yet in a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, AT&T warned it would record a $10 billion charge in the period related to its pension plans. The company also said that due to the higher subsidy costs associated with smartphones, "we expect a near-term pressure on operating income, margins, and earnings per share in the fourth quarter of 2012."

The Morgan Stanley analysts expect AT&T to report 759,000 postpaid wireless net subscriber adds for the period, which would be up from 151,000 in the third quarter of 2012 and 717,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011. AT&T's wireless EBITDA service margin was 40.8 percent in the third quarter of 2012, but the Morgan Stanley analysts think that will fall to 31.2 percent in the fourth quarter.

The growth at the larger carriers appears to have come at the expense of smaller, prepaid rivals. MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) reported that it lost around 93,000 subscribers during the fourth quarter, bringing its total subscriber loses for 2012 to around 460,000. MetroPCS' fourth-quarter declines were far greater than analysts had expected. Further, Cricket provider Leap Wireless (NASDAQ:LEAP) also remains under pressure. Jefferies analyst Thomas Seitz cut his rating on Leap, noting the carrier will face even greater competition in 2013.

2. Virgin Mobile, C Spire testing handset financing programs

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Sprint Nextel's (NYSE:S) prepaid brand Virgin Mobile and regional wireless carrier C Spire Wireless have been quietly testing handset financing programs, the carriers confirmed. Both operators are using the startup BillFloat to support their pilot programs, which are ongoing but expected to end within the next few weeks. The disclosures come a month after FierceWireless reported that Leap Wireless' (NASDAQ:LEAP) Cricket and MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) both recently launched handset financing options.

Sprint spokeswoman Jayne Wallace confirmed that Virgin Mobile has "a very small test going on with BillFloat in one market" but that there is there is no other commitment beyond that. She said the test will end later in the first quarter and that any decision about whether or how to expand the program will be made at a later date. Wallace declined to comment on other details of the program beyond that.

According to a BillFloat website for Virgin Mobile, the program supports five smartphones, including the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 4 and 4S, Samsung Galax S II and Galaxy Reverb and HTC Evo V 4G. For example, for the Samsung Galaxy S II, customers pay an up-front fee of $59 and then pay $49 a month for 12 months.

C Spire was more forthcoming about its handset financing plan. C Spire spokesman Dave Miller told FierceWireless that the company's trial with BillFloat began two months ago and will end in March. The trial is taking place in 12 retail locations across three of the carrier's markets. The program covers 11 devices. Customers can buy an iPhone 5 for $170.50 upfront and then pay $150 per month for six months, for example.

"We're in the early stages of the trial program and are still analyzing data and results," Miller told FierceWireless. "BillFloat fills a need, primarily in the advance pay market, by providing a quick, easy and convenient way for consumers in our footprint to own a smartphone with payment terms that fit their budget."

In December MetroPCS confirmed it is working with Progressive Finance and BillFloat to provide handset financing options to its customers. Leap is working with Progressive Finance. Progressive Finance and BillFloat essentially cover the cost of the handset and make money via interest and repayment fees. However, neither company conducts a credit check; instead, both require only access to an active bank account.

BillFloat, a San Francisco-based startup, just secured $21 million in new venture capital financing from Investor Growth Capital and returning venture investors Venrock, FirstRound Capital and Baseline Ventures. BillFloat, started in late 2009, had already raised $16 million.

In an interview with FierceWireless, BillFloat CEO and co-Founder Ryan Gilbert said that the company has around 700,000 customers, of which 40 to 45 percent are "mobile-centric." The company focuses on giving credit to customers for short-term loans that allow people to pay bills on time. He said that in mobile it "became more and more clear to us that credit in this context was a customer retention tool to carriers and other customers." He said he sees handset financing options as a form of credit that can be used to attract customers. Further, Gilbert said, the customers that BillFloat looks for and attracts are the kinds of consumers who rely on their smartphones as their main point of Internet access.

Customers apply online for BillFloat's service by providing basic personal identification information so that BillFloat can both ensure prospective customers are legitimate and to assess some measures related to credit that can be verified, such as how long they have been with their current employer and how long they have lived at their current residence. Once customers are approved, he said, a customer's phone can be picked up at a local retail store. Customers can then manage their monthly phone payments online. Monthly service plans are not included in the price and customers can only get one phone under each of BillFloat's SmartPay payment plans.

3. Dish urges FCC to halt review of Softbank/Sprint deal

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Dish Network (NASDAQ: DISH) asked the FCC to pause its review of Softbank's proposed $20.1 billion acquisition of 70 percent of Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) so that Dish can resolve issues related to its bid for Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR), which Sprint still hopes to acquire for $2.2 billion.

The latest regulatory maneuvering, while expected, comes as more of Clearwire's minority shareholders express concern that Sprint's offer for Clearwire is too low. Sprint last month made a $2.97 per share, or approximately $2.2 billion, offer to buy the 49 percent of Clearwire shares that Sprint does not already own.

Dish's unsolicited counteroffer was $3.30 per share, but also has several caveats about spectrum leasing and network management. A special committee of Clearwire's board is reviewing Dish's offer. Sprint has laid out a number of reasons Clearwire could not enter into a transaction with Dish, including that Clearwire is prohibited from selling spectrum without Sprint's consent; further, Sprint has said it thinks its offer gives "Clearwire shareholders a more certain price and path to close."

In its FCC filing, Dish wrote that Softbank's deal for Sprint is "unripe for consideration" because the fate of Clearwire is still up in the air. The Sprint-Clearwire deal is contingent upon closing of Softbank's deal for Sprint. "With competing offers for Clearwire in place, premature commission evaluation of Sprint's initial offer could undermine the commission's policy objective of neutrality in takeover contests by giving Softbank and Sprint a very real advantage in the corporate valuation process," Dish wrote.

Sprint and the FCC declined to comment, according to Bloomberg.

Meanwhile, more Clearwire minority investors are voicing their frustrations with Sprint's offer for Clearwire. Glenview Capital Management, which owns about 28 million Class A Clearwire shares, is expected to reject Sprint's current offer, according to a Bloomberg report, which cited an unnamed source with direct knowledge of the situation. Taran Asset Management, another Clearwire investor, will file an FCC complaint alleging that Sprint is undervaluing Clearwire, according Chris Gleason, a principal at the New York-based firm.

"Sprint has the ability to get the deal done if they increase their offer," Gleason told Bloomberg.  "To pretend they don't have to raise their bid is silly."

Mount Kellett Capital Management, another minority Clearwire shareholder, said earlier this week that Clearwire should thoroughly consider Dish's offer. According to Dow Jones Newswires, Mount Kellett wrote to Clearwire's board that Dish's $3.30 per share offer shows that Clearwire "utterly capitulated to Sprint's demand to sell the company at a grossly inadequate price." Clearwire declined to comment, according to Dow Jones.

Analysts think that Sprint will ultimately prevail in its quest to acquire Clearwire, but it may be forced to increase its bid. "Sprint controls the show, and they could eliminate Dish's involvement if they picked off some investors," BTIG analyst  Walt Piecyk told Bloomberg. "But that would involve increasing their bid."

4. TracFone's Straight Talk starts BYOD iPhone program

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

América Móvil's U.S. MVNO TracFone Wireless said its Straight Talk brand will start accepting customers who want to bring their GSM version of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone to its service. This new bring-your-own-device program will be offered in addition to TracFone's existing deal with Walmart, in which it sells CDMA versions of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4.

According to a Straight Talk blog post, customers can use an AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) or T-Mobile USA-compatible GSM iPhone or an unlocked GSM iPhone with the TracFone service. They just have to purchase a Straight Talk SIM card and airtime bundle--both standard and micro-SIM cards are available. Customers can then activate their SIM cards by following the provided activations instructions.

The new BYOD program is distinct from the pairing with Walmart. On Jan. 11 Walmart began offering "a no interest fixed-monthly payments special financing offer for only $25 a month with a Walmart Credit Card" to help customers pay for the iPhone. Straight Talk sells the iPhone 5 for $649 for the 16 GB model only, and the iPhone 4 for $449 for the 8 GB model only. Straight Talk offers the phone with two plans: $45 per month for unlimited voice, text and data, and $60 per month for unlimited voice, text and data and unlimited international calling to around 1,000 international destinations.

However, on its website, Straight Talk makes clear that these CDMA iPhones are not compatible with SIM cards. "Although your Straight Talk iPhone may contain a SIM slot, DO NOT insert a SIM card into it," the company wrote in a FAQ. "Your Straight Talk iPhone works on a CDMA network; inserting a SIM card could alter your settings and stop it from working properly."

While the purchasing options for Straight Talk iPhone service are becoming clearer, the actual terms of service are still cloudy. According to TechNewsDaily, which did not cite its source, the Walmart Straight Talk plan has a soft data cap of 2 GB and is not truly unlimited. Other reports, including in PC Magazine, also have noted the 2 GB soft cap. Once customers hit the cap they said that Straight Talk begins throttling users' speeds or cutting off service altogether.

A TracFone spokesman has declined to respond to repeated requests by FierceWireless over the past week for more information on the Straight Talk iPhone plan. Among the questions that are unanswered are whether or not LTE is supported on iPhone 5; if the iPhone can be used as mobile hotspot; and if data speed is throttled after users reach a 2 GB soft cap.

5. Report: Smartphones still have room to grow in Brazil, India and Russia

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Although more than 50 percent of all U.S. mobile users now own smartphones, smartphones still have a lot of growth ahead of them in emerging markets, according to a new report from research firm Nielsen.

According to the report, China is the only country among the so-called BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) where smartphones are predominant. According to the firm, two-thirds of China's mobile users owned smartphones as of the first half of 2012.

However, feature phones--which Nielsen defines as devices with no touchscreen, Qwerty keyboard or operating system--are owned by 80 percent of mobile subscribers in India and 51 percent of subscribers in Russia. In Brazil, the picture is more mixed, with 44 percent of subscribers using feature phones, 36 percent using smartphones and 21 percent owning multimedia phones (which have a touchscreen and/or Qwerty keyboard, but no operating system).

Overall, Nielsen thinks there is still room for smartphone growth in emerging markets, which fits with projections that more low-cost smartphones will penetrate those countries in the years ahead. The findings also fit with projections from IHS iSuppli, which reported that the number of low-end smartphones shipped will jump from around 206 million in 2012 to 302 million in 2013 and up to 559 million in 2016.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Tim Cook said earlier this month that he thinks China will eventually surpass the United States as Apple's largest market. Many analysts think China overtook the United States as the world's largest smartphone market last year.
