The coal industry's latest trick

But coal companies want to hide the facts and keep polluting. That's why they recently sponsored a meeting of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) where Indiana's top environmental regulator ran a workshop on how to obstruct clean air regulations.1 ALEC is also going after state renewable energy standards across the country. UCS members are fighting to get the truth in front of the public and into policy makers' hands. We've identified more than 350 specific coal generators that are ripe for retirement because they are economically uncompetitive with other energy sources, and are releasing harmful levels of pollution—mercury, soot, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide—into our air and water.2 When you become a 2013 member, you'll power the campaign to retire these plants for good.
