Editor's Corner

Does Samsung want to make Android irrelevant?

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Phil Goldstein

NEW YORK--I want to preface this by saying that I think Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S4 is an incredibly well-designed smartphone with a handful of innovative features that will help it stand out in the market. Given that, along with Samsung's marketing budget and the massive array of operators it has lined up to sell the GS4, I have no doubt Samsung has a mega-hit on its hands, and will likely sell tens of millions of GS4 units.

What's more interesting to me is what the GS4 says about Samsung and its relationship to Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), whose Android platform Samsung has used to build itself into the world's largest smartphone maker. The plethora of Samsung or Galaxy-branded software features, content offerings and services Samsung unleashed Thursday night has me convinced that Samsung wants consumers to place much more value in its brand than Google or Android.

To a certain extent, every handset company running Android tries to do this. They want consumers to be loyal to their brand, not the company providing the software. Yet because of Samsung's size, its dominance of the Android platform and the sheer number of services it is touting, the dynamic is at once more complex and troubling for Google.

Look at the range of Samsung services the company either rolled out or expanded on its GS4 announcement: using a "Samsung account" for Samsung Hub to get movies, music, games and books (which has been around longer than Google's Play store); Samsung WatchON for video discovery and sharing with TVs; S-Translate for text- to-speech and speech-to-text translation; Samsung Apps specialized for Samsung services; Group Play, which lets users share photos, music, documents and games with other Samsung devices; and so on. Many of these services, notably Hub and S-Translate, compete directly with ones Google offers...Continued

1. Samsung highlights wide range of Galaxy S4 features

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

NEW YORK--Samsung Electronics officially launched its newest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4, which it hopes will become a best-seller like its predecessor, the Galaxy S III, and help Samsung retain its position as the No. 1 global smartphone maker.

Samsung Galaxy S4

Click here for full coverage of Samsung's Galaxy S4.

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T), Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S), T-Mobile USA and U.S. Cellular (NYSE:USM) promised to sell the device, but none provided details such as pricing or specific launch dates. Samsung said it will roll out the Galaxy S4 starting at the end of April through 337 operators in 155 countries. The phone will support 802.11ac Wi-Fi, 3G and Cat. 3 LTE (supporting up to 100 Mbps theoretical peak downlink speeds) in both FDD-LTE and TD-LTE modes.

The S4 sports several new software enhancements, including a dual-camera feature that lets the person taking a photo or video insert themselves into the video or photo using what is captured in the front-facing camera. The camera also lets users erase objects taken in pictures.

"We are committed to innovation," said JK Shin, president of Samsung's mobile business, who was just named co-CEO of Samsung Electronics. "We are always listening to learn from people around the world about what kinds of  products they really want." (Samsung named Shin co-CEO along with Boo-keun Yoon, president of Samsung's TV business.)

As expected, Samsung said the S4 will offer what it calls a "Smart Pause," which the company said will allow users to control the screen by where they look. Specifically, the technology will pause a video when the user looks away. Samsung's S4 also offers "Smart Scroll," which Samsung said will scroll the browser or emails up and down by tracking a user's movements. "It recognizes your face looking at the screen and movement of your wrist and then scrolls the pages up or down accordingly," Samsung said.

Also, Samsung said its S4 "Air View" technology will allow a user to hover with their fingers over the screen to preview the content of an email, image gallery or video without having to open it. "With 'Air Gesture,' you can change the music track, scroll up and down a web page, or accept a call with a wave of your hand," Samsung said.

The phone also offers an "S Translate" translating service that supports English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and Latin American Spanish, and supports speech to text and text to speech.

Additionally, the S4 connects to Samsung's HomeSync device and cloud service, which offers 1 terabyte of storage. The S4 can connect to HomeSync via Near Field Communications and the service lets users transfer photos and videos from the phone to the HomeSync device as well as display content from a TV to the S4. Samsung also highlighted its Group Play feature, which lets users share and play the same song simultaneously or share photos. The phone also lets users have a group video call with up to three parties.

The S4 will run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and will sport a 5-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display with 441 pixels per inch resolution. The device will run a quad-core 1.9 GHz (NASDAQ:QCOM) Snapdragon processor in the U.S., and an octa-core 1.6 GHz Samsung Exynos processor in other markets, and includes a 13-megapixel camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 2 GB of RAM, and will come in 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB variants, with a removable 2,600 mAh battery.

Samsung has become the world's largest smartphone and overall handset maker largely due to its sales of smartphones running Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android platform--and Samsung's Galaxy S line of phones has been its most popular Android product. Samsung reported in mid-January that global sales of its flagship Galaxy S smartphone line surpassed 100 million. Of the total, Samsung said the original Galaxy S, released in 2010, reached 24 million sales; the S II, released in 2011, had 40 million; and the S III, released in 2012, achieved more than 40 million unit sales as well.

2. AT&T leaves door open to selling non-core assets amid tower sale speculation

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

AT&T (NYSE:T) said it is open to selling some of its non-core assets, which might include wireless towers, after a financial analyst said AT&T is looking to offload its towers in a deal similar to ones that its smaller rivals have made.

"We've seen others in the industry sell noncore assets, and if we wanted additional flexibility, that could be an option for us too," AT&T spokesman Brad Burns told Bloomberg. "In all cases, our decisions are driven by what's right for the company and for our shareowners. So in that sense, nothing's off the table."

Burns also told Reuters that "any comments by analysts about potential sales are simply speculation" and that "the bottom line is we have attractive assets that could be a potential source of cash."

RBC Capital Markets analyst Jonathan Atkin wrote in a research note Thursday that AT&T is looking to offload its towers in a deal that could fetch as much as $5 billion. "We believe AT&T is actively considering the monetization of its tower assets in a similar fashion to several of its peers in the wireless industry," Atkin wrote. "We calculate that these assets could fetch mid-$5B or more for AT&T's 14,500 sites, based on recent tower-industry transactions and assuming roughly $400,000 per site."

Atkin wrote that American Tower would be the most likely buyer of such assets from AT&T "based on its low balance-sheet leverage and Crown Castle's and SBA Communications' focus on the integration of their recent acquisitions ... . Should an transaction take place, we would view it as an attractive source of cash for AT&T."

In September 2012 T-Mobile USA sold the rights to 7,200 of its towers to Crown Castle for $2.4 billion. T-Mobile used the money to help finance its network modernization and LTE deployment. That sale came after SBA Communications agreed in June to purchase all of TowerCo's 3,252 tower sites in 47 states across the U.S. and Puerto Rico for $1.45 billion, substantially increasing its domestic cell site footprint.

3. Samsung's Shin: First Tizen smartphone coming in Q3

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Samsung Electronics co-CEO JK Shin said the manufacturer will release its first Tizen device during the third quarter of 2013, denying the move to embrace the Linux-based mobile operating system is related to any changes in its relationship with Google (NASDAQ:GOOG).

Samsung's JK Shin shows off the company's new Galaxy S4.

Last month, Samsung announced it would sunset its own Bada mobile OS, merging it into Tizen--at that time, the firm said it planned to release "new, competitive Tizen devices within this year," but offered no additional specifics on timing. In an interview Thursday with The Wall Street Journal, Shin confirmed a third-quarter launch date but did reveal pricing.

Targeting multiple device categories including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and in-vehicle infotainment systems, Tizen combines open-source technologies with a standards-based HTML5 development environment, enabling the creation of device-independent, cross-platform mobile applications. The Linux Foundation hosts the Tizen platform, and Samsung and Intel head the technical steering committee developing the OS.

Samsung nevertheless remains synonymous with its Android smartphones: The company controls more than 42.5 percent of the worldwide Android market and unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4, at a media event Thursday. Shin maintained that Google's decision to acquire rival handset maker Motorola Mobility has not dampened Samsung's interest in Android: "We have a good relationship with Google," he said, explaining that Samsung wants to offer a number of different mobile operating system choices to consumers and enterprise clients.

Last month, Samsung refuted reports that its Android sales dominance is fueling tensions with Google. Citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, the WSJ reported Google executives are concerned that Samsung could leverage its size and scale to pressure Google to alter the nature of their Android relationship, but Nick DiCarlo--vice president of portfolio planning and product marketing at Samsung's U.S. mobile arm--disputed the notion, telling FierceWireless "My interpretation is that we're a good partner and we build strong products that promote the ecosystem."

Shin may have increased tensions with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), however. "Smartphones and tablets based on Microsoft's Windows operating system aren't selling very well," he told the Journal. "There is a preference in the market for Android. In Europe, we're also seeing lackluster demand for Windows-based products."

4. HTC takes swipes at Samsung's Galaxy S4

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

HTC promised to be more aggressive in its marketing to counter the likes of Samsung Electronics and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)--and that attitude was in full display in HTC's reaction to Samsung's unveiling of its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4.

HTC's president of global sales, Jason Mackenzie, gave several interviews knocking the Galaxy S4 and touting HTC's new flagship product, the One. Mackenzie also mocked Samsung's presentation of the GS4, which used a lounge-in-cheek Broadway-style production to highlight the smartphone's features.

"Watching the presentation, it looks like they invested a lot in marketing instead of innovation," Mackenzie told CNET.

On Twitter, Mackenzie sent a tweet mocking Samsung's presentation: "So...how off-Broadway is this production?" and used the hash tag "#theNextBigFlop" to tweak Samsung's "The Next Big Thing" slogan.

"Everybody is entitled to their opinion," Ryan Bidan, director of marketing for Samsung Telecommunications America, told CNET. Bidan anchored most of Samsung's presentation.

Separately, HTC CMO Benjamin Ho, through HTC's public relations firm, sent out a statement calling the GS4 "more of the same." He said Samsung's "plastic" design for the GS4 "pales in comparison to the all-aluminum unibody HTC One."

"HTC remains the best option for those people looking for the best technology wrapped in premium design," Ho said. "Our customers want something different from the mainstream, who appear to be the target for the Galaxy. Our customers want original cutting-edge technology, mouth-watering design and a premium feel from their mobiles, which is why we created the HTC One."

Additionally, HTC had representatives outside of Samsung's launch event at Radio City Music Hall in New York City handing out snacks like Pringles chips and hot cocoa to journalists waiting to enter. The HTC representatives, in a bit of guerrilla marketing, also let journalists demo the HTC One and passed out coupons offering $100 to those who wanted to trade in their devices for the One.

Taken together, the actions represent the fulfillment of a vow Mackenzie made in a recent interview with FierceWireless that HTC would be "a lot more aggressive in our communication" and would not stop marketing when the GS4 rolled out. Last year HTC and many other companies were crushed under the weight of Samsung's marketing for the Galaxy S III, losing both sales and momentum. Samsung spent $401 million advertising its phones in the United States, outpacing Apple's $333 million, according to data from ad research and consulting firm Kantar Media cited in the Wall Street Journal.

The One and GS4 will go head-to-head in the market. HTC is shipping the One starting in early April after a manufacturing hiccup and Samsung plans to begin rolling out the GS4 in April as well. For now, Samsung is in the driver's seat as the world's largest smartphone and handset maker by volume and HTC is struggling to reverse declining year-over-year sales.

5. FreedomPop launches rollover data strategy - for a $3.50/month fee

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR) MVNO FreedomPop said it is launching a new service that will allow customers to roll over their unused data allotments from one month to the next for a $3.50 monthly fee.

The concept of rollover voice minutes is not new, and indeed AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) has used it for years, but a rollover scheme for data usage is actually quite novel. Under the FreedomPop scheme, customers can store up to 500 MB each month and continue rolling it over until the fund reaches 20 GB.

A FreedomPop spokeswoman said 30 percent of FreedomPop's existing users opted into the value-added service within the first 24 hours of it going live on Wednesday. FreedomPop has not disclosed how many customers it has.

The new feature comes a few weeks after the company began selling its WiMAX-powered $89 Burst home router. The device also came with new pricing options from FreedomPop, which is offering Burst owners 1 GB of free data per month.

FreedomPop's "freemium" business model is designed to entice users to the service with a free package of data in the hope that customers will purchase additional data allotments or other services from FreedomPop. The MVNO said Burst users who consume more than 1 GB can purchase additional data at $5 per GB. Users can also purchase a 10 GB package of data for $9.99 per month, with additional data beyond that amount priced at $5 per GB.

Beyond the data buckets, FreedomPop is upselling with faster data speeds. Burst users can purchase speeds of up to 6 Mbps for $14.99 per month and speeds up to 12 Mbps for $18.99 per month. FreedomPop currently offers 500 MB of free data to its existing customers, who can access the company's service through portable hotspots, USB modems and iPod touch cases. FreedomPop is planning to release a range of new products, including cases for Android phones and iPhones, in the coming months.

Although FreedomPop's current products run on Clearwire's mobile WiMAX network, the company is working to launch LTE service using Sprint Nextel's (NYSE:S) LTE network. FreedomPop CEO Stephen Stokols recently disclosed that FreedomPop "slightly delayed" its tentative LTE launch from the second quarter of this year to the third quarter of this year.
