Apple thwarts Evasi0n jailbreak with iOS 6.1.3 update Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) new iOS 6.1.3 mobile operating system update appears to spell doom for Evasi0n, the popular jailbreak enabling consumers to liberate their iPhones and iPads from the strict guidelines governing the iOS ecosystem. Jailbreaking is a legal but warranty-voiding process that allows consumers to run unauthorized code, adding software, features and user interface tweaks not supported by the original manufacturer. Hacker collective Evad3rs released Evasi0n in early February, exploiting several iOS holes to create an untethered jailbreak; more than 7 million iOS device owners downloaded the hack in a matter of days. CNet reports that iOS 6.1.3 patches the holes Evasi0n exploited, meaning consumers who install the Apple update will no longer be allowed to run the jailbreak on their device. (Apple's release notes even credit Evad3rs for uncovering four security holes fixed by the update.) Users can always opt against upgrading to iOS 6.1.3; once the update is installed on newer Apple devices, consumers may not downgrade to a previous version. Redmond Pie states that consumers with older Apple devices powered by an A4 or earlier processor can still jailbreak iOS 6.1.3 using the latest version of Redsn0w. Unlike Evasi0n, Redsn0w is a tethered jailbreak, meaning that if the iOS device powers down, the user must reconnect it to the desktop to run the jailbreak again. Apple released iOS 6.1.3 Tuesday. The update, first released as a beta to developers last month, also fixes a security vulnerability that allowed users to bypass the lockscreen and gain unauthorized access to call history, photos, messages, FaceTime and other services. iOS 6.1.3 additionally overhauls mapping information in Japan and now includes improved pronunciation for turn-by-turn directions as well as 3D images of buildings. Report: Amazon exploring on-demand streaming music service Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is the latest digital media giant reportedly considering a streaming music service, following speculation that both Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) are both readying efforts to challenge established players like Spotify, Pandora and Rhapsody. Multiple sources have told The Verge that Amazon is in formal talks with various record labels and music publishers to explore an on-demand, multi-platform streaming service similar in scope to Spotify, the de facto market leader. Few other details are known, and an Amazon spokesperson declined to comment. An on-demand music initiative would fit comfortably alongside Amazon's existing services and infrastructure. The online retail giant introduced its Cloud Player service in early 2011, enabling consumers across a multitude of connected devices to stream their own digital music libraries from Amazon servers. Cloud Player Free customers can store all MP3 music purchased from Amazon and import up to 250 additional songs from their PC or Mac at no charge. Cloud Player Premium, priced at $24.99 per year, allows customers to import and store up to 250,000 songs. The Amazon MP3 store, which offers more than 22 million songs as premium downloads, also could integrate with the proposed on-demand service, enabling consumers to purchase the songs they hear. Amazon also may feel it must roll out an on-demand streaming service simply to keep pace with Apple and Google, its chief mobile multimedia rivals. Rumors of Apple's streaming music ambitions first emerged last fall, when The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times reported the computing giant was mulling a multi-platform effort that would program content based on users' favorite artists, songs and genres, most likely taking the form of a preinstalled application integrated into Apple devices like the iPhone and iPad. Soon after, Bloomberg reported Apple was deep in talks with record label partners ahead of a proposed first-quarter 2013 launch, and earlier this month, Reuters reported Apple CEO Tim Cook and Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue have met with Beats Electronics CEO and co-founder Jimmy Iovine to explore a potential partnership involving the audio technology firm's forthcoming Daisy streaming service. Google's interest in entering the streaming music segment only recently came to light, but rumors suggest the company has not one but two services in the pipeline. Late last month, publications including The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg revealed Google is currently in talks with major record labels to license their catalogs for a premium service optimized for mobile devices and slated to go live as soon as the third quarter of 2013. While the initiative is designed to boost the consumer appeal of Google's Android mobile operating system, giving Android device owners expanded access to entertainment on the go, a source said services are expected to roll out to non-Android smartphones and tablets as well. Fortune subsequently reported that Google's YouTube unit plans to launch a multi-platform streaming music service of its own, offering both free, ad-supported access as well as a subscription-based, ad-free option; Google currently monetizes YouTube by selling ads against music videos, awarding a cut of revenues to its label partners. It's unclear exactly how the two Google services would co-exist; a YouTube spokesperson said "While we don't comment on rumor or speculation, there are some content creators that think they would benefit from a subscription revenue stream in addition to ads, so we're looking at that." Verizon pushes Android 4.2 Jelly Bean to Samsung's Galaxy Nexus Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) is updating Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Nexus smartphone to run Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android 4.2, a.k.a. Jelly Bean. The operator is pushing the over-the-air update to subscribers in phases over the days ahead. | | Samsung Galaxy Nexus | Google unveiled Android 4.2 Jelly Bean in October. The update features the Photo Sphere camera application, which enables users to capture 360-degree panoramic images they can share via the Google+ social platform or upload to Google Maps. Additional highlights include Gesture Typing, a Swype-like text input tool enabling users to drag their finger across the screen from letter to letter, as well as Miracast, which brings wireless media sharing capabilities similar to Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) Airplay. Google's Android Developers Dashboard reveals that just 1.6 percent of devices now run Jelly Bean 4.2. Android 4.1, also nicknamed Jelly Bean, powers 14.9 percent of devices. Google is expected to announce Android 5.0--purportedly nicknamed Key Line Pie--during its annual I/O developer conference, taking place in San Francisco in May. Android controls 52.3 percent of the U.S. smartphone market, according to comScore data published earlier this month. Apple's iOS follows at 37.8 percent, far ahead of third-place BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) at 5.9 percent. Brightcove retreats from HTML5, pushes refreshed SDKs for native Android, iOS apps SANTA CLARA, Calif.--Streaming video platform provider Brightcove said it has shuttered its "App Cloud" mobile application development product and is instead pushing refreshed SDKs for Android and iOS. Brightcove's Albert Lai explained that the company is refocusing on native apps, rather than HTML5 solutions, due to customer demand. "In most cases you really do need a native experience," he said. "The feedback we've gotten is that customers want to enhance that (mobile) experience from a native perspective." Brightcove began selling its App Cloud service in 2011. The company advertised the product as a way for developers to quickly build iOS and Android applications using HTML5, CSS and JavaScript. Thus, developers could build one version of their application in HTML5 and then wrap it in native Android or iOS code, thereby allowing developers to maintain one version of their app but distribute it through both Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android marketplace. Lai, innovation architect in Brightcove's CTO office, said that "in some cases, mobile is becoming the primary focus" for Brightcove's customers. Therefore, he said, the company found it needed to invest more heavily in native apps, which could provide a better and richer user experience. For example, he said native apps allow Brightcove customers to properly install digital rights management policies, improve the delivery of ads and generally better control the user experience. "Mobile Web can only do so much," he said. Native SDKs provide "a significant improvement for what we can offer our customers." In comments here at the OTTCON show, Lai said Brightcove's new iOS and Android SDKs support Adobe SiteCatalyst, Adobe Pass, Akamai Media Analytics, comScore Media Metrix, FreeWheel, Google DoubleClick for Publishers, Nielsen VideoCensus and Google Widevine. The company said the SDKs are available free of charge to Brightcove Pro and Enterprise edition Brightcove Video Cloud customers, and the company plans to make the SDKs available as stand-alone commercial products for customers who manage their own online video platform or use other third-party solutions. Lai also noted that Brightcove will continue to invest in HTML5 technology. The company said it will support its existing App Cloud customers through June 2014. Interestingly, Lai also said that he believes developer interest in Android will overtake interest in iOS sometime this year. Lai said the Brightcove's customers--which include Fox, New York Times, Showtime and others--are keen to use the company's technology to deliver video to smartphones, but have tended to target iOS first since there are fewer devices to account for. "Many of our publishers have been hesitant to jump on Android because of the fragmentation," he said, explaining that Brightcove customers must support not only the various versions of Android software but also the wide range of phone models built by Android hardware manufacturers. The fragmentation in Android makes it difficult for developers to test all the possible iterations of their Android apps. Nonetheless, Lai said that content providers are increasingly targeting Android due to the platform's dominant share of the global market (Gartner found that Android's market share has climbed from 51.3 percent market share in the fourth quarter of 2011 to 69.7 percent in the fourth quarter of last year) and because of the increased importance they are placing on the mobile channel. Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch jumps ship for Apple Adobe Systems' longtime CTO Kevin Lynch has resigned his position to join Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), the company whose steadfast refusal to support Adobe Flash on iOS-powered devices effectively ushered the video and multimedia technology into irrelevance. | | Kevin Lynch | "Kevin Lynch, Adobe CTO, is leaving the company effective March 22 to take a position at Apple," an Adobe spokesperson told AllThingsD. "We will not be replacing the CTO position; responsibility for technology development lies with our business unit heads under the leadership of Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen. Bryan Lamkin, who has recently returned to Adobe, will assume responsibilities for cross company research and technology initiatives as well as Corporate Development. We wish Kevin well in this new chapter of his career." Apple confirmed the Lynch hire and said he will assume the position of vice president of technology, reporting to Apple SVP of Technologies Bob Mansfield and tasked with coordinating the firm's hardware and software units. Lynch joined Adobe in 2005 following its acquisition of Macromedia, leading the company across three vectors: Multiscreen, cloud and social computing. He also spearheaded Adobe's Research and Experience Design teams. Sources said Lynch aspired to ultimately take over as Adobe CEO, but opted for the Apple gig because Narayen shows no signs of stepping down. "Adobe has done a good job transitioning its products to the cloud and putting in place the elements of a subscription model," Forrester Analyst Jeffrey Hammond told Forbes. "Perhaps this gives Apple some experience that will help them compete with Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) on a front they are not very good at right now." Adobe halted development of its browser-based Flash Player application runtime for mobile devices in late 2011, shifting its focus to native apps and the HTML5 Web standard. But in many respects the Adobe Flash deathwatch officially began in April 2010, when Apple rewrote its iPhone developer agreement to mandate that all applications must be written to run directly on the iOS platform, effectively banning cross-compiler translation tools like Adobe's Flash Professional CS5. Lynch publicly criticized the ban, calling Apple's move a "protectionist strategy" that was "bad for consumers." Article Juniper: Examining the state of the in-app purchase | | Siân Rowlands | Those operating within the mobile games space, or indeed wider apps space, will be well aware of the elusive "in-app purchase." Used by developers, publishers and app stores as a means of monetizing users, purchasing virtual currencies and in-game items has become commonplace and the practice features in many of the top grossing games. From the developers perspective, an in-app purchase operates in a similar manner to offering a pay-per-download game--most app stores take a 30 percent cut of the user's money and the purchases are implemented via the app store's framework. The primary differences are that in-app purchases offer developers the chance to make more money, more easily. This is because the in-app purchase is not necessarily a one-off purchase, as games feature a vast number of weapons, character customizations and objects to enhance a user's game. In addition to this, it is much easier to persuade users to... continued Read the full column on the Web Read more about: Juniper column, In-App Purchases back to top | > Wi-Fi Evolution and its role in the future of wireless - Wednesday, April 3rd, 1pm ET / 10am PT Tune-in to this webinar to learn more about Wi-Fi evolution, its critical role in addressing the looming 1000x data challenge, enabling smart connected homes, and exciting new frontiers it is poised to explore.
