App discovery is a known problem for all developers. Users typically rely on the top-selling app lists in their app store of choice as a guide for what to purchase. That, in turn, fuels sales of the same, already popular apps, making it that much harder for new apps (and developers) to break into these top app lists. And while there are curated app lists and some app search engines, the majority of new buys aren't coming from there. So where do these new apps that break onto these top lists come from? There's a trend I've noticed of late and it starts with AppGratis, an app that profiles one or more free or heavily discounted apps per day. Take March 18, for example. AppGratis spotlighted photography app lo-mob, which was reduced from $1.99 to free, and on that same day lo-mob climbed to the third spot on the App Store's Top Free apps list. A similar thing happened on March 19: AppGratis' free app of the day, Scout, reached the No. 2 spot on the Top Free apps list. This isn't unusual for AppGratis, which said that it regularly drives 500,000 to 1 million downloads for apps it works with. Last month, for example, the company worked to promote iOS game EDGE Extended and pushed 1,074,000 downloads in under a day. AppGratis' founder Simon Dawlat said AppGratis currently has 12 million users. Services such as AppGratis (and its competitors like Appoday, AppRewards, Appsfire and FreeMyApps) use an interesting model. A premium app maker either heavily discounts the price of its app or, more often, makes it free for a short period of time. AppGratis features a write-up of the app and a link to download it, and its users are sent a push notification about the new app of the day. The app developer gets a bump to its userbase and usually pays the discovery service a cost per install (COI). The amount comes out of the developer's pocket, since that developer won't be making money selling their app through this promotion. "We have distribution deals in place with a lot of app makers, and we help these companies grow their user-base and their revenue. AppGratis has been profitable since day one, back in 2009, so it's safe to say that monetization is working out well," said Dawlat. Monetization for the developers that sell these apps can vary. The key is to sustain the momentum gained from going free for a day. Appsfire CEO Ouriel Ohayon told MobyAffiliates that the worst thing for a developer is having a day or two of strong downloads, then having them drop off after the promotion ends. That's why some... continued Read the full column on the Web Read more about: mobile apps back to top | | | Sponsor: Ooyala, Verimatrix, Irdeto and IneoQuest FierceLive! Apple acquires indoor mapping startup WifiSLAM Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has purchased indoor GPS services firm WifiSLAM, a move that likely signals an expansion of its Apple Maps platform. The Wall Street Journal first reported the WifiSLAM acquisition, with sources stating Apple paid around $20 million. An Apple spokesperson confirmed the deal, telling Reuters the company "buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." WifiSLAM technology pinpoints a consumer's location within 2.5 meters, using only ambient Wi-Fi signals that are already present in buildings. Its mobile applications span from step-by-step indoor navigation to product-level retail customer engagement to proximity-based social networking. Apple likely will leverage WifiSLAM's software to boost Apple Maps, launched last year in association with its iOS 6 operating system update as a replacement for preloaded Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Maps services. Consumers have been harshly critical of Apple Maps, identifying dozens of inaccuracies, and the outcry even prompted a public apology from Apple CEO Tim Cook, who later said the company is "putting all of our energy into making [Maps] right." Recent improvements include enhanced location information for Apple Stores, businesses, movie theaters, restaurants, airports and transit stops. Google Maps for mobile added indoor mapping tools in late 2011, supplying contextual data helping users determine where they are within a building, which floor they're on and where they might wish to go next. Google Maps now includes indoor maps for more than 10,000 locations in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Japan and Switzerland, including airports, shopping malls, museums and casinos. Last summer, 22 companies including Nokia (NYSE:NOK), Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), Samsung Electronics and Sony Mobile joined forces to create the In-Location Alliance, an effort to improve and expand indoor positioning and related mobile services. The group focuses on both consumer and enterprise services including real-time navigation inside buildings, directions to personalized products and promotions inside retail stores and malls, asset/employee location, customer identification and security solutions. Primary solutions will leverage Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi standards. Neither Apple nor Google has signed on with the In-Location Alliance, which is slated to roll out handset-based consumer applications later this year. Barnes & Noble, Fortumo team for in-app purchases on Nook Barnes & Noble is partnering with mobile payment services firm Fortumo to offer in-app purchase capabilities across Android applications optimized for the bookseller's Nook tablets and e-readers. Barnes & Noble's Nook developer partners can begin offering premium in-app goods like virtual currencies, extra levels and power-ups beginning during the first half of April. IAP capabilities will be offered on devices including the 7-inch Nook HD, 9-inch Nook HD+ and Nook Color e-reader. "Watch your email for critical updates regarding the availability of the Fortumo In-App Purchase SDK," Barnes & Noble states. "Once we notify you that the Fortumo SDK for Nook is ready, you will need to download and recompile your apps… We will notify you when we are ready for you to re-submit your apps to Nook Developer using our existing submission process." Fortumo's one-click checkout process requires consumers to enter their credit card information only the first time they make an in-app purchase. In addition to its SDK and related software tools, Fortumo will offer a dashboard where developers can track their monetization progress. Barnes & Noble has not yet clarified how it will share revenues and process payments derived from Nook in-app purchases and did not respond to a request for details prior to press time. The company currently offers developers the standard 30 percent cut of revenues from premium Nook app downloads. Barnes & Noble will roll out Nook in-app purchases one year after rival Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) introduced the same functionality for its Appstore for Android. Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Play have each offered IAP capabilities for several years. Barnes & Noble will look to the Fortumo partnership to boost developer and consumer interest in the Nook platform: The company's Nook Media unit, which includes hardware as well as e-books and digital media, slumped 25.9 percent year-over-year during the 2012 holiday season to $316 million, but it noted that content sales increased 6.8 percent compared to year-ago totals. Barnes & Noble has said it remains committed to the Nook Media business despite its recent struggles, dismissing a recent New York Times report indicating the bookseller plans to move away from engineering and building Nook e-readers and tablets in favor of licensing its digital content to other device manufacturers. Yahoo continues acquisition spree, scoops up mobile news app Summly Yahoo has acquired Summly, a London-based mobile software startup promising consumers more efficient access to online news content. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The free Summly app, launched for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS late last year, leveraged an algorithm built with Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence technologies to analyze text and automatically summarize relevant news stories based on topics, keywords and media sources selected by the user. Users have read more than 90 million summaries in the months since Summly went live; Summly founder Nick D'Aloisio is still just 17 years old, and the company has raised more than $1.5 million from investors including Horizons Ventures. Yahoo has already removed Summly from Apple's App Store. "You will see the [Summly] technology come to life throughout Yahoo's mobile experiences soon," stated Senior Vice President of Mobile and Emerging Products Adam Cahan on the Official Yahoo Blog. The Summly deal follows just days after Yahoo purchased and shut down personalized mobile recommendation engine Jybe, which offered users tips on local events, restaurants and movies based on their personal interests as well as subjects trending within their social circle. Former Yahoo Search Technology Vice President Arnab Bhattacharjee launched the startup in 2011 partnership with other erstwhile members of Yahoo's Search and Hadoop teams. In the months since ex-Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) executive Marissa Mayer took over as CEO, Yahoo also has acquired startups Alike, Stamped, Snip.it and OnTheAir. Speaking at February's Goldman Sachs' Technology and Internet conference, Mayer said Yahoo plans to refocus on a dozen or so apps that people access frequently, rather than a large number of apps that might not get much use. At present, the company counts 200 million mobile monthly active users spread across 60 to 75 different applications, but Mayer said consumers would ideally make use of two to four signature Yahoo mobile apps. Mayer is looking to mobile to rekindle growth in Yahoo's userbase. "I think the opportunity for growth (in mobile) is very fundamentally one of the things that drew me to Yahoo," she said, according to The Wall Street Journal. "When you think about mobile... When you see triple-digit growth in some areas, there's a big opportunity for growth. Yahoo has the content that people want on their phone." Report: FAA may loosen restrictions on passenger access to iPads, Kindles The Federal Aviation Administration may relax rules preventing airline passengers from accessing tablets and e-readers during takeoff and landing, The New York Times reports. Citing sources affiliated with an industry working group set up by the FAA to study the use of portable electronics on planes, the report states the agency hopes to announce looser restrictions later this year. One member of the group and an FAA official said the agency is under intense pressure to let passengers use reading devices on planes or to provide concrete scientific evidence why they cannot. The working group, which includes representatives from Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Boeing, the Consumer Electronics Association, the Federal Communications Commission and the Association of Flight Attendants, plans to release its findings by July 31. The group also is expected to deliver a working definition of what the term "airplane mode" truly means as well as guidelines to guarantee that flight attendants must not act as "social police" determining which devices are acceptable during flight. Any resulting FAA policy change would not cover mobile phones, however. According to the NYT report, there is no evidence that tablets like Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad and dedicated e-readers like Amazon's Kindle affect an aircraft's avionics, but travelers are still told to turn off these devices at the beginning and end of their flight. At the same time, the FAA permits use of electric razors and audio recorders during all phases of flight, even though studies indicate those products generate more electronic emissions than tablets. Senator Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) told The New York Times she plans to introduce legislation to guarantee the FAA follows through with its promise to introduce new in-flight device access rules. McCaskill said her frustration with the agency's current stance has increased since she discovered iPads are now allowed as flight manuals in the cockpit and are distributed to some flight attendants as a resource for in-air procedures. "So it's OK to have iPads in the cockpit; it's OK for flight attendants--and they are not in a panic--yet it's not OK for the traveling public," McCaskill said. "A flying copy of War and Peace is more dangerous than a Kindle." Facebook extends free Messenger voice calling to U.K. Two months after adding free VoIP calling to the North American versions of its standalone Messenger application for Apple's iOS, Facebook is expanding the feature to the U.K. market, enabling users to make free calls criss-crossing both sides of the Atlantic. Facebook Messenger allows users to call other iOS device owners via Wi-Fi or cellular data connection. To initiate a call, consumers open a conversation with their Facebook friend, tap the "i" button in the top-right corner and click Free Call. Recipients will receive a push notification indicating someone is attempting to reach them. Facebook launched Messenger in mid-2011 in an effort to steer users away from conventional operator SMS solutions, and the expansion of international voice options promises to further escalate the threat posed to carrier services. Facebook now touts more than 1 billion users worldwide, with roughly 680 million accessing its platform via mobile.
