False Killer Whale Has Genuine Killer Smile

" 'Sup?," we imagine this False Killer Whale said to Doug Perrine of SeaPics as it swam on by. To which we imagine Doug replying back, "Oh, nothin' - please don't eat me."

The American marine wildlife photographer snapped this marvelous pic of the grinning cetacean off the shores of Kona, Hawaii. The Telegraph has the pic: Link

Blouh, a street artist in Belgium, uses stencils to bring science fiction heroes and villains to his neighborhood. The Vader image is especially well-placed and gives me a great idea for how Luke and his father could have fought their last duel.

Chlorox Tooth Paste

Chlorox Tooth Paste? I had to look it up to see if this was a hoax. I found a 1920 publication with a letter of praise to Nulyne Laboratories followed by an offer to send the toothpaste to any dentist free of charge to use on their patients. Mind you, current Chlorox products are not recommended for use on your teeth. Link

Gentlemen bakers, you could show up at your vegetarian girlfriend’s house triumphantly holding this and declaring you were successful in the hunt, so tonight you feast.

Excellent idea! Mark your victory by tearing into this anatomical heart. You can find Oseland's recipe at the link.

IRS Apologizes for $60,000 Star Trek Parody

Posted: 23 Mar 2013 08:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

The Internal Revenue Service got chewed out by Congress for wasting taxpayer money on a couple of videos made for a training and leadership conference in 2010. One was a parody of Gilligan's Island, but most of the $60,000 spent was for a Star Trek parody that "does not appear to have any training value."

The production value is high even though the acting is what one might expect from a bunch of tax collectors. In the video, the spaceship is approaching the planet “Notax,” where alien identity theft appears to be a problem.

“The IRS recognizes and takes seriously our obligation to be good stewards of government resources and taxpayer dollars,” the agency said in a statement. “There is no mistaking that this video did not reflect the best stewardship of resources.”

Congressional investigators concluded that the Gilligan's Island parody video was a legitimate training tool. Although the $60,000 spent on the two videos is a pittance compared to, say, a day at war, we've posted much better parodies made for $500 or less. The IRS should consider looking to the YouTube community to produce future videos. Link  -via Viral Viral Videos

Step Into The Oceanic Twilight Zone

Posted: 23 Mar 2013 06:00 PM PDT

Step into the Twilight Zone. The disphotic zone of the ocean, that is. The oceanic Twilight Zone, which starts about at 600 feet deep and extends to about 3,300 feet, is called that because only a small amount of light penetrate the water at this level. Plants do not grow here, but strange animals are abound, as this fantastic video clip by the BBC's Nature Microworlds show:

Clickbait

Posted: 23 Mar 2013 05:00 PM PDT

v

There was a time I had to explain to some new bloggers what kind of links to avoid using. One was "lists of unattributed photos with no useful information," otherwise known as clickbait. Darius Kazemi at Tiny Subversions demonstrates how easy it is to generate such lists with just a bit of code and no human input. It's kind of like playing Mad-Libs.

1. Title: The (number) Most (adjective) (noun)s.
2. Photos: Enter (adjective) + (noun) in Google Image Search. Select (number) images.
3. Captions: Select (number) captions randomly from master list, insert (adjective) and (noun).
4. Profit!

See any number of automatically-generated lists, and reload for new ones. Strangely, you'll have to disable AdBlock to see it. Mind the titles; some images may be NSFW. Link -via Metafilter

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, I am reliably informed, is a hottie. And since the Star Trek and Sherlock actor exists in the same universe as Tumblr, he is inevitably transposed into innumerable memes. The blog PokéBatch, I Choose You is devoted to Cumberbatched versions of Pokémon. You can view more images at the link.

The CERN Animal Shelter for Computer Mice

Posted: 23 Mar 2013 01:00 PM PDT

Just outside the CERN Computer Centre in Geneva, Switzerland, the world's leading physicists have built a shelter for retired and obsolete mice. It's a win-win situation, as the mice are hardly recyclable and the CERN scientists and technicians need to get outside more often. German physics student Emily89 took this picture during a recent visit to the facility. Link -via reddit

I've checked. It's real. And as soon as I've finished writing this post, I'm going to order through interlibrary loan the book containing this article. Peter McLaren and Janet Morris's essay on the Power Rangers' phallocentric milieu is something I must read.

It's one of 18 completely real academic papers about 90s-era television that were successfully published. You can read about them at the link.

Oddest Book Title of the Year

Posted: 23 Mar 2013 11:00 AM PDT

The Bookseller has announced recipient of the Diagram Prize for the oddest book title of the year. The winner is Goblinproofing One's Chicken Coop.

The title won 38% of the public vote, fighting off competition from fellow contenders How Tea Cosies Changed the World and God's Doodle: The Life and Times of the Penis.

Horace Bent, The Bookseller's diarist and custodian of the prize, said: "In Goblinproofing One's Chicken Coop the public have chosen a hugely important work regarding the best way to protect one's fowl from the fairy realm's most bothersome creatures. Everyone knows well the hazards cats, dogs and foxes hold for owners of chickens, not to mention red mite, but the public has recognised the need to illuminate this hitherto under-reported nuisance."

Goblinproofing One's Chicken Coop was written by Reginald Bakeley, and is available at Amazon. See the titles of the other books that received plenty of votes, and some of the previous winners. Link -via Arbroath

The comment thread talks about other keyboards that have side labels or no labels at all--completely blank keys. Have you ever used one?

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 23 Mar 2013 07:00 AM PDT

March Madness is here, and the NCAA tournament has so far been a bit different: Harvard advances by beating New Mexico, La Salle upset Kansas State, and Florida Gulf Coast beat Georgetown. And last year's champion, Kentucky, isn't even in the tournament. We may have a Final Four made up of schools that have never been there before! Amid all the excitement, I hope you find time to catch up on what's been happening this past week at Neatorama.

Alex posted a couple of really neat photographic collections on the Spotlight Blog: Tunnels to Manhattan and The Guardians of Time.

Eddie Deezen brought us The Origins of the Terms Cheesecake and Beefcake.

The Peepal Conclave illustrated the selection of a new pope in marshmallow Peeps.

The “Name Number” for Geology, and for Other Professions was the contribution from the Annals of Improbable Research.

Uncle John's Bathroom Reader gave us a look back at the eruption of Mount St. Helens.

And The Unauthorized Biography of the Easter Bunny came from mental_floss magazine.

We had four Brainteasers this week from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader: The Dishonest Bellhop, Two Jugs, Twin Birthdays, and Party Punch. Did you figure any of them out before looking at the answer?

vIn the What Is It? game, the pictured tool is a spoke wrench, suitable for holding pieces of wire or as a spoke-grip for screwing up the spokes of suspension wheels, such as are used in bicycles and other light vehicles. Steve Pauk knew what it was, and wins a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! The funniest answer of the week was from Paul D., who said it was a Higgs Boson. We've been looking all over for that, haven't we? Paul also wins a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! Thanks to all who participated, even if you just gave a heart. See the answers to all the mystery items of the week at the What is It? blog.

Those who subscribe to NeatoMail had a chance to win Star Wars prizes last week! Congratulations to the winners, Ponder Variety, Portiap, and John Scallorn. Look in the right sidebar to sign up for Neatomail, so you can be in on the next contest. And look for those Star Wars prizes for sale in the NeatoShop!

The post with the most comments this week was Two Jugs, followed by The Tongue-Mounted Toothbrush, and The Origins of the Terms Cheesecake and Beefcake. You can still join in the conversations on these or any other posts.

The comment of the week came from Joseph Francis, who responded to the title of the video Dosvedanya, Winter! by saying, "Dosvedanya Winter? I had the biggest crush on her in high school. Last I heard she ended up marrying Arrivederci Roma." A good pun will win the accolade every time!

The most popular post of the week was Two Jugs, which admittedly has a provocative title, followed by Baby Pears and Twin Birthdays.

vUsability tip of the week: If you like a particular post on Neatorama, share it with your family and friends! Click on the title of a post, and you'll see buttons at the bottom that make it easy to email a post to someone you know who'd appreciate it. Other buttons let you share it on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or G+. Your friends will thank you!

Star Wars March Madness

Posted: 23 Mar 2013 06:00 AM PDT

The Star Wars March Madness tournament marches on, so don't you dare skip out. I foresee force choking in your future if you don't participate ... Today's matchup is an important one, with R2D2 trying to eliminate C3PO. But Darth Vader is still in the running. And still the favorite.

Each day, fans get to decide which combatants from both the Light Side and the Dark Side of the Force will advance to the next round. Who will ultimately win? You decide: Link
