Smaller Can Be Better

by Rob Goldman

The term "rightsize" is a great one and is not used often enough. Merriam Webster defines it as a reduction (or change) in a workforce headcount to an optimal size. According to the dictionary, it became an official word in 1989 ... and although it looks like it should be two words, it is in fact "rightsized."

I bring this up because an interesting and rarely talked about metric to measure a company's health, productivity or prospects is headcount. It can also be a good tool to determine how much an emerging company is a real player in its respective industry segment.

For example, the best performing companies often have a relatively small number of employees, yet are generating meaningful revenue in general and especially on a revenue-per-employee basis. A firm with lower revenue per employee may not be viewed as favorably.

A Sure Bet

by Rob Goldman

It is said that the only thing sure in life are death and taxes. I believe that another category should be added to this list.  That category is the success of gambling initiatives and enterprises.  There is a clear plurality of our world population that has a strong affinity for gambling. Moreover, the more readily available the gaming opportunities, the more likely there is substantive success and the greater stream of repeat customers and users.

I have always been a fan of gaming companies and gaming stocks, despite their somewhat seasonal business and cyclical economic nature.  I am also a believer in occasionally buying and selling the same stocks. In this fashion, one does not have to learn a new story, can feel comfortable with trends and can take advantage of inflection points in the business cycle.

With that in mind, we return to one of our earliest profiled stocks, and one that we have mentioned from time to time. That stock is Glu Mobile, Inc. (NASDAQ: GLUU - $2.83).
