The social networking giant was making a play at being a true mobile platform. I think there are only a handful of companies that can be mobile platforms--which I define as companies that can control end-to-end user experiences through software, services and hardware. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is certainly one. And while I think there are many companies that want to be mobile platforms, including Facebook, Amazon and Samsung Electronics, I don't think they can be or should be trying. Facebook tried to make clear that its ambitions are not to be a mobile operating system but to be something perhaps even more ubiquitous: something that drives the experience people have on their phones. "We don't want to build a phone or operating system that only some people will be able to use," Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said. "We want to build the best experience for every person on every phone." Additionally, he told Wired: "We have a pretty good partnership with Apple, but they want to own the whole experience themselves. There aren't a lot of bridges between us and Google, but we are aligned with their open philosophy." So Facebook doesn't want to offer a siloed mobile experience--it wants its social network to be prominent across all devices. "Facebook is in a very different place than Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, and Microsoft," Zuckerberg said. "We are trying to build a community."...Continued More Read more about: samsung, Amazon back to top | | | Sponsor: ID Analytics FierceLive! AT&T to buy spectrum, 21,000 customers from C Spire's Corr subsidiary AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) is working to acquire the spectrum and subscribers of Corr Wireless, a wireless carrier that provides 2G GSM service in rural parts of Northeastern Alabama. Cellular South, now C Spire Wireless, acquired Corr in 2010 but now appears to be selling the company's spectrum and customers--21,000 of them--to AT&T. Terms of the deal, which still requires FCC approval, were not disclosed. The transaction comes as little surprise. Since the 2011 collapse of AT&T's $39 billion bid for T-Mobile USA, the carrier has been working to acquire spectrum from a variety of other sources. For example, late last year AT&T obtained approval to purchase AWS and 2.3 GHz WCS spectrum from the likes of NextWave Wireless, Comcast, Horizon Wi-Com and San Diego Gas & Electric Company. The carrier said it would use the spectrum to reinforce its LTE network. Last year, AT&T executives said the company has enough spectrum for the next five years, according to analyst reports from a meeting with AT&T's management. As for AT&T's deal with CDMA carrier C Spire (called Cellular South in FCC filings), the transaction includes the transfer of Corr's customers to AT&T, which AT&T said would benefit Corr subscribers by giving them access to AT&T's nationwide, high-speed wireless network. The deal also involves 10 to 52 MHz of spectrum covering parts of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. Specifically AT&T would acquire: - 25 MHz of cellular B Block spectrum in three counties,
- 10 to 15 MHz of PCS spectrum in 25 counties,
- and 12 MHz of Lower 700 MHz C Block spectrum in 58 counties.
"The transaction will permit AT&T to quickly expand its network capacity in the license areas," AT&T, in an FCC filing, wrote on the spectrum licenses. "In some of these license areas, AT&T's current spectrum holdings are relatively thin, and, in some cases, AT&T holds neither AWS nor Lower 700 MHz spectrum (except for 6 MHz of unpaired Lower 700 MHz D Block spectrum). The spectrum additions made possible by this transaction will allow AT&T to expand the capacity of its network in order to keep up with consumer demands for data-intensive services and to deploy much more robust and spectrally efficient LTE services.20 In some areas, for example, the transaction will permit a 10x10 LTE deployment instead of a 5x5 deployment." Carriers typically do not comment on spectrum purchases beyond their FCC filings. AT&T isn't the only wireless carrier pursuing new spectrum. For example, Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) paid $3.9 billion to acquire AWS spectrum licenses from a group of cable companies. And T-Mobile USA is hoping to merge with flat-rate rival MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) in order to bolster its nascent LTE network with Metro's spectrum. HTC sinks to record-low profit in Q1 amid One launch delay HTC's net profit in the first quarter plunged as the company's earnings took a hit because of launch delays for the One, HTC's flagship smartphone around which it is basing its 2013 turnaround strategy. The Taiwanese smartphone maker said its unaudited net profit for the first quarter was around $2.8 million, compared to $148.1 million in the year-ago quarter. The average of 19 analysts' estimates compiled by Bloomberg was for profit of around $19.9 million. HTC said total revenue for the quarter clocked in at $1.42 billion, down 37 percent from the year-ago period when it had $2.25 billion in sales. Analyst had expected $1.81 billion in revenue, according to Bloomberg. HTC's momentum stalled when the company was forced to push back the launch of the One smartphone by several weeks in some markets due to component shortages. "These numbers show the production shortage really is that bad, and my sense is that it won't get much better in the second quarter because many of those issues continue," Dennis Chan, an analyst at Yuanta Securities Co. in Taipei, told Bloomberg. "For smartphones, timing is everything and the delay means they lose that timing." "HTC's whole schedule was thrown into disarray because of the HTC One, which meant it didn't have the revenue coming in but still had a lot of fixed costs," Daiwa Securities analyst Birdy Lu told the Wall Street Journal. "There will be some improvement this quarter in terms of the bottom line, but they still face a lot of competition." AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T), Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) and T-Mobile USA will start selling the One later this month. HTC has said the One will be available globally through more than 185 operators and major retailers in more than 80 regions and countries. "We are seeing our strongest initial response for any smartphone we've ever designed with several hundred thousand people in the U.S. pre-registering to purchase the new HTC One," Jason Mackenzie, HTC's president of global sales, wrote in an email to customers in March. The One has several unique features that HTC is going to use to differentiate it from the competition. One is BlinkFeed, which turns the device's home screen into a single live stream of personally relevant information that includes social updates, entertainment and lifestyle updates, news and photos. HTC's One camera also uses what it calls "UltraPixels," which the company said gather 300 percent more light than traditional smartphone camera sensors. HTC has said this new approach will dramatically improve low-light camera performance. HTC is also making a splash with the HTC First, the first smartphone loaded with Facebook's (NASDAQ:FB) Home for Android user interface. "It's big for us," Mackenzie told AllThingsD. "We've got to get the brand out there in huge ways." HTC recently launched an 11-city "Live Experience Tour" in the United States to highlight the features of the One and generate buzz in key markets. The tour is part of an aggressive and targeted new marketing approach from HTC, which needs the One to be a success, especially in the U.S. market. HTC's One launch will being going up against Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S4, which likely will receive much more marketing support than HTC can afford. To compete head-to-head with Samsung's Galaxy S4, which will also go on sale shortly at Tier 1 U.S. carriers, HTC has said it will be louder in its marketing approach. As a result, the company is discontinuing its "Quietly Brilliant" marketing tagline. HTC said it will increase its digital marketing budget by 250 percent this year compared with 2012, and will increase its traditional media marketing spending by 100 percent. Huawei ships 32M smartphones in 2012, misses its expectations Huawei revealed in its annual report for 2012 that it shipped 32 million smartphones last year, which, while up 60 percent from 2011, was well below the company's own prior forecasts for 2012 smartphone shipments. | | Ascend P1 S | "In 2012, with the rapidly growing popularity of smart devices, Huawei's consumer business increased steadily, earning global sales revenue of CNY48,376 million ($7.79 billion)--an increase of 8.4% year-on-year," the Chinese vendor noted. "Annual shipments totaled 127 million units, including 32 million smartphones--an increase of 60% year-on-year." However, Huawei executives had said multiple times in 2012 that the company was expecting smartphone shipments of 50 to 60 million units. That was the target Huawei Device Wan Biao gave to Dow Jones Newswires in an interview at the Mobile World Congress in February 2012. The upper limit of that forecast was also confirmed by Huawei Device Chairman Richard Yu around the same time. In September 2012 Wan reiterated the forecast of 60 million smartphone shipments for 2012. "It will be very challenging, but that target remains intact," he told Reuters. A Huawei spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Industry analyst Ken Hyers said that the 60 million figure was "aspirational" and that "I didn't really anticipate them hitting that." He said that Huawei struggled last year in its home market against Samsung Electronics and Lenovo and also did not have as much success with its "hero" smartphones at the high end of the market as perhaps it had anticipated. "I think that they had anticipated that they would make a bigger play in the higher-end device market with their Ascend series," he told FierceWireless. "And, like many other vendors, they didn't anticipate what Samsung would do in the high end of the market with their Galaxy products." Samsung become the world's largest smartphone and overall handset maker last year in large part because of its Galaxy line of Android smartphones. Huawei's major flagship models from 2012, the Ascend P1 and Ascend D1 Quad, were not released by U.S. carriers, but Hyers said Huawei's miss had less to do with that than with its struggles in China and other emerging markets. Overall in 2012 Huawei reported a 32 percent increase in net profit to $2.5 billion, while revenue jumped 8 percent to $35.47 billion. Huawei said it expects to grow overall revenue this year by 10 percent and that it also expects a 10 percent compound annual growth in revenue over the next five years. "Information and communications technology will continue to grow, with new opportunities coming from cloud computing, BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), and big data, and feature phones being replaced by smartphones at a faster rate," the company said in a statement. Separately, Huawei's Chinese rival ZTE said it had exceeded its target by more than doubling its smartphone shipments in 2012. The company did not provide specific unit shipments, however. AT&T remains silent on Digital Life launch delay AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) missed its planned March launch of its Digital Life home automation service, and the company is staying mum on when it will roll out the service and why the launch was delayed. The carrier said in January that it would launch Digital Life in eight markets in March. In late March the company said the service would launch sometime "this spring," without giving a reason for the delay. At the time, the company also said it would effectively double the number of markets where it will initially launch the service from eight to 15, with plans to hit 50 markets by year-end. AT&T representatives declined to comment on the delay and instead referred to earlier statements the company had made on the program. AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel told FierceWireless in late March that the company "will share market information when we roll out the service this spring." The company cited "competitive reasons" for not sharing more information on its launch markets. Siegel also said AT&T will "share pricing information when the specific markets are announced," but did not give a specific timeframe for when that would be. AT&T has said it will have Digital Life centers in Atlanta and Dallas that will manage the product, and the company has been actively looking for developers to make applications for Digital Life to help make the product more robust. Over the past few months, AT&T executives have repeatedly touted home security and automation as one of the company's new growth opportunities for the future, along with the connected car, mobile healthcare and mobile payments. Ericsson upbeat about network gear market in 2013 Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) Chairman Leif Johansson said the company sees a more stable and healthy market for network equipment in 2013 as demand grows in the United States and China begins its march toward LTE. "I am a little more optimistic on the U.S.," Johansson told Bloomberg. "Perhaps Europe too has stabilized. I don't think we have any more bad news coming from Europe." He said the outlook for overall 2013 demand is "stable and slightly on the positive side." According to most analysts, Ericsson still leads the network infrastructure market, especially for LTE. Analysts at Technology Business Research think Ericsson's global LTE market share will dip in 2013, but only slightly, down from 34 percent in 2012 to 32 percent in 2013. Starting in 2011, Ericsson began a number of contracts to upgrade and modernize networks, projects with high initial costs. However, now Ericsson anticipates that it will turn those projects into "capacity" operations with more software sales and higher margins. Ericsson also anticipates that China will continue to grow; China Mobile, for example, plans to increase capital expenditures by 49 percent in 2013 as it moves to deploy TD-LTE service. In 2012, China and northeast Asia made up about 17 percent of Ericsson's sales, according to Bloomberg. Separately, Ericsson said it bought Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) IPTV Mediaroom business for an undisclosed sum. The deal, which had been rumored for several weeks, will let the Swedish vendor add IPTV technology and skills to its growing services business. The deal is expected to close during the second half of 2013; Mediaroom employs more than 400 people worldwide. "This deal is within range where we previously bought a company called Optimi for $99 million and where we also bought LG Nortel for $234 million," Ove Anebygd, vice president and head of TV at Ericsson, told Reuters. "So this is somewhere in between the two." Ericsson has been making waves in the content and media market in recent months. In February the vendor unveiled a new unified content delivery network (CDN) solution called Ericsson Media Delivery Network. The solution uses Ericsson's advanced packet core and radio capabilities as well as intelligent content management capabilities. Ericsson said the CDN solution will help operators make money on video delivery and content providers provide quality experiences across all networks. Further, in January Ericsson acquired IT consultancy Devoteam's Telecom & Media operations in France. With the move Ericsson picked up 400 French-based consultants with expertise in IP multimedia subsystems, delivery platforms and radio/TV networks.
