From the 'Can you hear me now?' guy to Catherine Zeta-Jones: Top 10 wireless carrier spokespeople

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Phil Goldstein

When T-Mobile USA announced its "Uncarrier" strategy in late March it also revealed that it would effectively be sidelining its spokeswoman Carly Foulkes, widely known as the T-Mobile Girl. She first appeared in pretty magenta-tinged dresses and then in the spring of 2012 started donning the black leather of a biker as part of T-Mobile's "No More Mr. Nice Girl" campaign to highlight the carrier's "4G" HSPA+ network.

"The current campaign will not feature the character of the T-Mobile Girl, however she is still a part of the company's brand family," a T-Mobile spokesperson told Business Insider.

So, in theory, Carly could make a comeback, but more than likely she'll be pushed aside for T-Mobile's new "Uncarrier" messaging, which so far features an ad with cowboys designed to highlight how T-Mobile is breaking with other carriers by ditching contracts.

Carly's departure got the editors of FierceWireless thinking about other spokespeople who have appeared over the years (and there have been a lot of them). Some spokespeople have become so indelibly etched in our collective consciousness that it's difficult to think of the products they pitched without thinking of them: Joe DiMaggio for Mr. Coffee; Michael Jordan for Nike (and Hanes, and Gatorade…); and, of course, Bill Cosby for Jell-O.

But what about wireless carrier spokespeople? Which ones really mattered, and why? What did they do for the brands they represented, and how? What about their messaging resonated with the brand and with consumers?

FierceWireless has come up with the following top 10 carrier spokespeople. We ranked them based on several criteria, including their duration as spokespeople, how recognizable they are, and, subjectively, what impact their presence and marketing message had on the brand of the carrier they represented.

Today's Top News

1. Verizon CEO: 50% of our wireless traffic is video

By Sue Marek Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

LAS VEGAS--Video accounts for 50 percent of Verizon Wireless' (NYSE:VZ) network traffic today and by 2017 the carrier estimates video will make up two-thirds of all traffic over the network. Speaking at the National Association of Broadcasters conference here yesterday, Verizon Communications CEO Lowell McAdam said that the company's investment in its LTE network is what is making the delivery of that video possible. "With 3G you have video clips but there is buffering. With 4G you can stream video," he said.

McAdam's appearance at the NAB show was interesting considering that broadcasters have always had a fairly contentious relationship with wireless operators over spectrum. Perhaps that was why there were so many empty seats at McAdam's one-on-one discussion with NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith.

McAdam used the NAB show to attempt to sooth concerns that some broadcasters may have about Verizon's plans for LTE Broadcast technology. At the Consumer Electronics Show in January, McAdam publicly discussed his desire to use LTE Broadcast technology to broadcast live events like the 2014 Super Bowl to Verizon's customers.

McAdam said that he doesn't plan to replace traditional broadcast TV because the majority of people will want to watch the 2014 Super Bowl in their homes over their existing television. "We don't want to get in the way of broadcasters," McAdam said. However, he added that there may be specific events like the Super Bowl where Verizon could "add a dimension and it becomes better."

Interestingly McAdam also recounted a meeting he had with former Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs, who is now deceased. McAdam was trying to convince Jobs to make the iPhone 5 compatible with LTE. "I was really trying to sell him and he sat there without any reaction. Finally, he said, 'Enough. You had me at 10 Mbps. I know you can stream video at 10 Mbps.' And Apple's next phone was LTE," McAdam said.

2. T-Mobile launches iPhone trade-in program to encourage switchers

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

To build buzz and hike sales of its anticipated April 12 launch of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5, T-Mobile USA is launching an iPhone trade-in program aimed at encouraging existing iPhone users to switch to T-Mobile's network.

For those customers who bring in their existing iPhones, T-Mobile said it would eliminate the $99 fee for its iPhone 5. And, depending on the trade-in value of the customer's iPhone, T-Mobile said it would also issue up to $120 in credit that customers could apply to their monthly service bill, device payments or the purchase of accessories or another device.

Normally the iPhone 5 under T-Mobile's new no-contract "Simple Choice" plans costs $99 upfront with payments of $20 per month for 24 months (customers can also buy the phone outright).

T-Mobile's promotion, which runs through Father's Day on June 16, is also notable because of the more than 2 million unlocked iPhones it says are currently on its network. The carrier is looking to hold on to as many of those customers as possible, many of whom likely have the iPhone 4 or 4S.

"It really is the simplest and most affordable way to get into an iPhone 5," Andrew Sherrard, senior vice president of marketing for T-Mobile, told AllThingsD. Sherrard said that T-Mobile is pleased with overall iPhone preorders, but declined to say how many the carrier has received so far.

"We're really happy and pleased with how that's going," Sherrard said. "We think we are going to see some good traffic in our stores on Friday and Saturday."

T-Mobile has said its version of the iPhone 5 will support its LTE and HSPA bands, which means that Apple has designed a unique version of the phone for T-Mobile's network. However, the carrier's iPhone 4S and 4 will not carry the same configuration, and as a result those devices will only be available in "select" markets and channels.

T-Mobile's LTE network in now live in seven markets on its 1700 MHz AWS spectrum, including Baltimore; Houston; Kansas City; Las Vegas; Phoenix; San Jose, Calif.; and Washington, D.C. T-Mobile CEO John Legere has said that New York City will be online with LTE by early summer. The carrier plans to cover 100 million POPs with LTE by mid-2013 and 200 million by year-end. Legere has also said that when T-Mobile merges with MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS), T-Mobile will be able to deploy 2X20 MHz LTE in 90 percent of the top 25 U.S. markets. (MetroPCS shareholders will vote on the deal April 12.)

T-Mobile already has 225 million POPs covered with its HSPA+42 network, and Legere said there are 140 million POPs now covered by the carrier's refarmed 1900 MHz PCS spectrum. The carrier plans to expand its HSPA network on 1900 MHz to 200 million POPs by the end of the year. Legere said in late March that "right now we have more bandwidth than you know what to do with."

3. Report: Apple, Yahoo in talks on deeper iOS integration

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Apple (NASDAQ:APL) and Yahoo are in discussions to integrate Yahoo Web services more deeply into the iPhone and iPad user experience, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Yahoo weather and finance apps are already preloaded on iOS devices, and other Yahoo data helps power Apple's Siri voice assistant. Citing sources with knowledge of the talks, the report states Apple and Yahoo are now exploring a deal that would encompass more pre-installed Yahoo content and/or an expanded Siri partnership.

In addition, Yahoo is mulling options to provide search data to Apple, in turn reducing Apple's reliance on information and services from archrival Google (NASDAQ:GOOG). However, the possibility of a search pact is considered remote: Google is already under contract as the default Web search provider on iOS devices, and while Apple no longer pre-installs services like Google Maps and YouTube, insiders say Apple executives like Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue believe Google delivers a superior search experience compared to competing services, and they are unwilling to sacrifice the quality of iOS search results.

Yahoo's 10-year search partnership with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) also poses obstacles: While Yahoo controls the look and feel of its search tools, Microsoft's Bing search engine provides the actual query results.

Representatives for both Apple and Yahoo declined to comment.

Yahoo President and CEO Marissa Mayer has called mobile the company's "top priority," and is looking to the platform to recharge its business. "I think the opportunity for growth (in mobile) is very fundamentally one of the things that drew me to Yahoo," the former Google exec told The Wall Street Journal earlier this year. "When you think about mobile... When you see triple-digit growth in some areas, there's a big opportunity for growth. Yahoo has the content that people want on their phone."

Mayer has also said that because Yahoo does not manufacture its own mobile devices or own its own mobile OS, browser or social network, it must rely on partnerships to boost usage. "There is really an opportunity for strong partnerships and that's what we'll be focused on," she said earlier this year at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

4. DT could delay T-Mobile/MetroPCS vote if initial tally comes in short

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

As T-Mobile USA parent Deutsche Telekom hurtles toward an April 12 meeting where MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) shareholders will vote on a merger with T-Mobile, it has one distinct advantage: it gets to count the votes.

DT will be able to see how MetroPCS shareholders are voting in real time since many are sending in proxy materials prior to the meeting, according to Bloomberg. That gives DT an inside track into whether the deal will be pushed over the line by shareholders or will fall short of the necessary votes. The Bloomberg report, citing unnamed sources, said DT may delay the final vote if it looks like the deal is going down so that it can sweeten its offer, as minority MetroPCS shareholders have been demanding for weeks.

The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday.

Whether DT would change the deal terms is matter of dispute. Last week, DT flatly denied a Reuters report that said the company was considering amending the terms of the transaction. Shortly thereafter, however, DT walked that back slightly and instead said it had "no comment" on the report.

While getting access to how a proxy vote is proceeding is common in mergers, it's unusual for a company to use that information to potentially change its offer so late in the process, Jim Kahan, a senior adviser at boutique investment-banking firm TAP Advisors, told Bloomberg.

"They are more in the driver's seat than the people who oppose the deal," Kahan said. "The whole process has been a little strange."

The deal has come under renewed pressure after two investor advisory firms--Institutional Shareholder Services and Glass, Lewis & Co--came out against the deal. One other advisory firm, Egan-Jones Proxy Services, said it was in favor of the transaction. The deal has received all the necessary approvals from federal regulators.

MetroPCS has been feuding with two of its shareholders, Paulson & Co. and P. Schoenfeld Asset Management LP, known as PSAM, which have argued that the deal is poorly structured and that MetroPCS shareholders are better off rejecting it. MetroPCS has argued repeatedly that the shareholders are distorting the terms of the deal, that no other bidder has emerged since last fall, and that MetroPCS shareholders will benefit from being part of the combined company with a stronger spectrum position.

Under the terms of the transaction, MetroPCS will engage in a reverse-merger with T-Mobile and parent Deutsche Telekom will own 74 percent the combined company, which will be public. MetroPCS will also declare a 1-for-2 reverse stock split and pay $1.5 billion in cash to its shareholders. Metro's minority shareholders are concerned about the debt load the new company will take on and want MetroPCS to retain a greater share of the combined entity than 26 percent.

5. DragonWave slashes 1/3 of senior management jobs, amends NSN deal

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Struggling vendor DragonWave said it cut its senior management positions by one-third and made changes to its agreement with Nokia Siemens Networks to reduce operating expenses.

DragonWave did not say which or how many positions it cut, but said it would give an update on its cost reductions during its next quarterly earnings announcement. Additionally, Nokia Siemens said it will give DragonWave an immediate cash payment of around $13.9 million.

DragonWave and NSN also ended their Italian services agreement, which launched June 2012 and involved NSN providing research and development and other services to DragonWave. As a result, DragonWave expects to cut operating costs by around $4 million per quarter. DragonWave also said it expects to pay a termination fee totaling around $9.1 million over the course of its fiscal year 2014.

DragonWave has struggled over the past couple of years due to heavy reliance on Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR); Clearwire curtailed its investments in microwave backhaul when it stopped rolling out its WiMAX network in preparation for a migration to TD-LTE.

DragonWave bought most of its microwave transport business last year from NSN, and DragonWave is also the preferred strategic supplier of packet microwave and related products to NSN. DragonWave has used the deal to keep it afloat. In its statement today, DragonWave said that it has rebranded the products acquired from Nokia Siemens as "Harmony" products and will continue the support and development of these products. DragonWave said the products will continue to be sold through NSN.

In early March, DragonWave lowered revenue expectations for its fourth quarter for the fiscal year 2013, which ended February 28, 2013, to around $30 million. The company said main area of shortfall was lower revenue from NSN during the period compared to the fiscal third quarter.

In the third quarter, DragonWave lost $13.9 million on revenue of $38.5 million. One year earlier, DragonWave reported a loss of $8 million on revenue of $11.8 million.

SPOTLIGHT ON... Dish amasses $10B cash pile as questions swirl over its plans

Dish Network (NASDAQ: DISH) now has a record $10 billion in cash in hand, about as much as oil and gas giant Exxon Mobil, according to Bloomberg, and no one in the industry really seems to know what Dish Chairman Charlie Ergen plans to do with all the money. Dish has declined to comment. The issue has caught steam following Dish's recent announcement that it had priced a debt offering of $2.3 billion and said the proceeds could be used for "wireless and spectrum-related strategic transactions." Dish raised $1.5 billion in December for similar reasons. Dish, which has made a conditional offer to Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR), could use the money in some kind of merger with rival DirecTV, or to build out its planned LTE Advanced network. Others speculate that Dish could try to steal MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) away from Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile. "The question remains: What are they going to do with this ample liquidity?" S&P analyst Tuna Amobi told Bloomberg. "I wouldn't rule out anything, really, knowing Charlie." Article
