While many in the established tech political action community are shaking their heads about the launch by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg of a brand spanking new lobbying organization, FWD.us, they should really be rejoicing. This is a case of the more the merrier and about role playing. LinkedIn, the largest professional network on the Internet, weighing in at more than 200 million members worldwide, has announced that it will acquire Pulse, a news reader app and mobile content distribution platform. It takes a certain kind of smarts - an almost idiot savant kind of smarts - to become a truly outstanding hacker. And it requires an enormous amount of tenacity and stick-to-itiveness. Those of us on the other side of the fence may have more laudable goals than these individuals, but to work against them, one necessarily needs to among them - some of the same traits that define hackers also define the good guys. To help organizations tackle the challenges around big data, IBM unveiled plans to drive Flash technology further into the enterprise, including a $1 billion investment in research and development to design, create and integrate new Flash solutions into its growing portfolio of servers, storage systems and middleware. According to at least one study, enterprise buyers and sellers disagree on the value of cloud computing. Buyers say time of deployment is the top value, reduced cost of ownership only the fourth most important reason for using cloud computing services. Over-the-top video viewing continues to climb, but end users still haven't settled on the best way to consume it. That's a key takeaway from Accenture's Video-Over-Internet Consumer Survey released this month - and it means there could still be opportunity for various stakeholders, including traditional video service providers and telco/broadband service providers. There are two parts to a successful product: the idea, otherwise known as the easy part, and execution, or the part folks either get wrong or don't get done. Four men identified as members of the infamous LulzSec hacking group have pled guilty to illegal hacking dating back to 2011. Each of the four could wind up spending as much as 10 years in U.K. prison - though news reports suggest two to three years is a more likely sentence. There's a very notable difference between predicting your train time and knowing your train time.
