March Fistula Repair Camp a Success

march fistula camp patient

UVP has continued our partnership with the Childbirth Injuries Trust and Kamuli Mission Hospital for another successful fistula camp.  For this camp, the UVP fistula coordinator, Loy Tumusiime, located 15 women who were candidates for fistula repair surgery.  All fifteen women had the repair surgery and are in their fourth week of recovery.  They will be returning to their villages with a new lease on life soon.

One success story from this camp comes from Ester Ruth Babirye, who is 78 years old.  She developed a fistula as a result of her first pregnancy at age 13.  For the past 65 years, she has lived with this unimaginable burden.  Her fistula was small - a simple surgery could have been performed years ago.  Thanks to Loy and Dr. Constantine of Childbirth Injuries Trust, this woman will be able to live a life free of constant leaking that she hasn't known since age 12.  Amazing! If you would like to fund a fistula repair surgery for $60 and receive the story of the woman whose life you help to change forever, click here to visit our site at SeeYourImpact.

Kinu village gets a safe water source

itanda well

The community of Itanda – Kinu was overwhelmed with joy when they pumped the first jerrycan of water from their own constructed shallow well. The women and children came from all directions carrying jerrycans to draw water from the well. They danced and sang choruses which were highlighted with ululations, drawing the attention of more people. The men who were actively involved in the shallow well digging and construction process were very amazed with the work they did. None of them expected to have a safe water source in a short couple of weeks.

As we work toward sustainable public health and development programs that involve citizens to have real impact in communities, we have been able to fulfill our mission of facilitating community health and well-being in rural Uganda through improved access, education and prevention.

The shallow well project involves the community members in all stages of the building process. Additionally, we educate communities on the need for a safe water source and proper sanitation facilities. Because of our combined efforts, the community can see a decrease in diarrheal diseases caused by the contaminated drinking water from the open water sources used previously.

Big thanks to our donors who have enabled us carry out the shallow well program in our communities.

Introducing new villages for 2013

new village

Since the inception of the Healthy Villages model at the Uganda Village Project, we have implemented our health-related programs in 18 villages. UVP started work in 5 villages in 2009, then expanded to another 5 villages in 2010, and added on 3 more villages in 2011.

UVP implements its program in a village for 3 years, creating awareness and links for the villagers to access health services from the nearest health centers. Following this strategy, in the year 2012, we graduated the 2009 villages and took up another 5 villages.

In 2013, as we prepare to graduate the 2010 villages, we are also preparing to take on new villages.  We are glad to share with you the warm welcome that we received from the villages during the big community meetings where we introduce our organization and the work we do.

In the 4 villages we have had meetings so far the turnout has been amazing, beyond our expectations. These communities have heard and seen what we have done in other villages and are excited to begin a partnership with UVP.

We know that if we keep up the good working relationship from the grassroots level all the way up including our donors, we will continue making a difference in Iganga. In the past, we've been limited from taking on the full 5 villages per year by funding. Help us reach more villages in Iganga by donating to our Healthy Villages program today!

Yet another well has been finished in the village of Kinu. Read on to find out more!

The deadline for summer internships has closed. We look forward to working with this year's cohort!
