Landsat 8 Working 'Flawlessly' So Far

Landsat 8, the most advanced Earth observation craft currently in existence, launched successfully back in February with a mission to monitor the world's forests and other ecosystems. According to a recent update from the U.S. Geological Survey's Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center, the satellite continues to be successful, so far working "flawlessly."

Hovering nearly 450 miles above the Earth, Landsat 8 sends more than 400 data-filled images back to the EROS center per day. These images are then archived and made accessible to scientists or other interested parties for free. In fact, according to project scientist Tom Loveland, the center's mission requires all images be made publicly available within 48 hours of being taken, but most are ready within 24 hours.
