Microsoft finally expands Office productivity suite to Apple's iPhone Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is extending its signature Office productivity suite to Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, enabling Office 365 subscribers to access, view and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents on the go. The free Office Mobile application enables access to documents stored in the SkyDrive, SkyDrive Pro and SharePoint cloud services, as well as files recently viewed on the desktop and email attachments. All Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents are optimized for the iPhone form factor, with all formatting and content remaining intact, complete with support for charts, animations, SmartArt Graphics and shapes. Users may also create new Word and Excel files on their phone, view and edit recently viewed documents offline, review and add comments and share files via email or save them to SkyDrive or SharePoint. Office Mobile access is limited to current Office 365 subscribers, meaning services are not available to iPhone owners who purchased the most recent Office desktop suite as a standalone product. In addition, the app is currently compatible only with Apple's iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and fifth-generation iPod touch, and not with the bestselling iPad tablet. Office users have long clamored for access via iOS devices, but AllThingsD reported late last year that discussions between Microsoft and Apple stalled after the two companies failed to agree on revenue sharing. Insiders said Microsoft balked at giving Apple its standard 30 percent App Store cut of revenues from Office-branded, native iOS apps: Because Office is a perennial cash cow, Microsoft did not want to hand over such a large chunk of profits. Microsoft reportedly also argued that Office's value and utility would bring significant benefits to the iOS platform as a whole, meriting an adjustment to the 70/30 split. Apple declined to comment on talks with Microsoft but has indicated it will not bend on App Store revenue sharing. The Next Web reports consumers can sign up for Office 365 from directly within the Office Mobile application, meaning Apple will claim 30 percent of the $100 annual subscription fee. The publication was unable to confirm whether or not Apple will receive an ongoing 30 percent of Office 365 revenues for customers who sign up within the iOS app. For more: - read this Next Web article - read this Verge article Related articles: Report: Microsoft Office for Android, iOS in limbo until fall 2014 Analyst: Microsoft forfeiting $2.5 billion a year by keeping Office off Apple's iPad Report: Microsoft pressuring Apple to adjust revenue split on Office for iOS Report: Microsoft balks at Apple fees, jeopardizing SkyDrive for iOS Report: Microsoft Office apps coming to iOS, Android in early 2013 Microsoft reveals Office features coming to Windows Phone Read more about: Microsoft back to top | 2. Apple's iAd slashes minimum spend to $50 with Workbench rollout Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is rolling out iAd Workbench, a suite of new self-serve advertising tools enabling iOS developers to promote their applications for as little as $50. Workbench offers developers a dashboard for building targeted ads running inside other iOS apps--users input their ad buy budget, maximum daily spend and cost-per-click bid, and Workbench estimates how many users will likely see the ad, click on it and download the app in question. The service touts both manual and automatic targeting options, letting developers pinpoint user demographics based on anonymous behavior and preference data or allowing iAd to determine the right audience. Workbench also features analytics tools for optimizing and refining iAd campaigns as well as performance metrics detailing total impressions, average cost-per-click and total downloads. Workbench signals a dramatic shift for the iAd business. When Apple first unveiled iAd in 2010, the company demanded a minimum $1 million campaign investment, dramatically limiting marketer interest in the network, and it also maintained control of all aspects of iAd technical production. In Feb. 2011, Apple slashed the minimum buy to $500,000 in an effort to attract advertisers with more limited budgets while simultaneously boosting iAd fill rates (the percentage of ad inventory filled with actual advertisements). A year later, Apple once again reduced the minimum buy, this time to $100,000--the company also began awarding app developers 70 percent of iAd revenues, up from the previous 60 percent, a step to compensate for lower ad rates and to incentivize developers to build their businesses on iOS. The Workbench launch is "an admission that [Apple] got it very wrong in the first place," Jason Barrett, head of monetization at mobile software development firm Grapple, told Mobile Marketer. "iAd was completely unaffordable to all but the highest-spending brands, and Apple took total control of the creative process on their behalf. Now any brand can advertise, and they can create their own campaign collateral... The brand count for iAd will inevitably increase sharply as a result, but Apple will no longer be able to dictate the look and feel of the advertising that they carry which may, as far as Apple are concerned, have a negative effect on the visual/design quality of their advertising environment." Workbench also follows in the wake of reports that Apple is shifting iAd's engineering and sales focus away from campaigns integrated into iOS apps to messages supporting its new iTunes Radio streaming service. Earlier this month, Bloomberg revealed that while iAd staffers will continue to sell advertisements carried inside mobile apps, Apple is ramping up negotiations to secure brand partners to run iTunes Radio campaigns coinciding with the service's commercial launch later this year. Apple will support iTunes Radio across the iOS platform as well as Apple TV and Mac. The service is available free, and it includes both audio and text ads. Subscribers to Apple's iTunes Match--which scans music library files and matches each selection with 256 kbps versions culled from the iTunes Store catalog and stored via the iCloud platform--may access an ad-free version of iTunes Radio: iTunes Match is priced at $24.99 per year. Google to shutter AdWhirl, mobile app developers angered Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) will shut down its AdWhirl mobile advertising mediation platform at the end of September, according to a notice on the AdWhirl homepage. Google also confirmed the move in a letter sent to developer partners. The AdWhirl platform enables mobile applications to switch between competing ad networks on the fly, simplifying inventory management and fulfillment. Google acquired AdWhirl as part of its 2009 agreement to purchase mobile ad network AdMob for $750 million and continued to support the platform while also building out its own similar AdMob Mediation service. "As we continue to improve AdMob Mediation, we've decided to retire AdWhirl, and will be discontinuing the service on 30 September 2013," Google writes to developers. "The open source code for AdWhirl will still be available if anyone wants to run their own AdWhirl service." Google goes on to urge AdWhirl developers to begin migrating their apps to AdMob Mediation, which it calls "no cost and more robust, with features like network-level reporting, country-level allocation and support for more ad formats… We encourage you to start using AdMob Mediation prior to 30 September. You'll need an AdMob account to begin using AdMob Mediation." In a Google Groups post, Google Developer Programs Engineer Eric Leichtenschlag added "Mediation will stop working for apps using the [AdWhirl] service. This means we will return a 404 to the SDK and there will be a blank space where the ad used to be. Users will not be able to login to their accounts after that date because we will be retiring www.adwhirl.com too. We recommend that users downloads any reports they want to keep prior to that date." Mad Rabbit developer Vinh Nguyen, who forwarded the Google letter to TechCrunch, expressed frustration with the decision to sunset AdWhirl. "We developers understand that [AdWhirl] might be discontinued in the future, but terminating this in three months is just too fast for us to migrate," Nguyen said. "A lot of developers depended on most of their revenue through this product." Another Google Groups developer commenter argued "How about a little more time to migrate[?] Some of us have used AdWhirl for 4 years and have tons of apps to update for this change. When you killed off Google Ads and forced us to use AdMob at least you gave us till the end of the year." The AdWhirl announcement follows roughly a month after unveiled a rebuilt AdMob integrating technologies from other Google ad services including AdSense and AdWords, also introducing new features including Conversion Optimizer, which touts increased conversions and decreased cost per acquisition. IDC reports that Google's mobile ad efforts generated 2012 gross revenues of $243 million, trailed by Millennial Media (NYSE:MM) at $151 million, Apple (NASDAQ:APL) at $125 million and Jumptap at $90 million. BMI sues Pandora, dismisses radio station purchase as a 'stunt' Rights management organization Broadcast Music Inc. has filed suit against Pandora Media, petitioning the Federal Rate Court to set royalty fees for all music played across the streaming music platform. The suit follows on the heels of Pandora Media purchasing South Dakota terrestrial radio station KXMZ, a move to capitalize on reduced performance royalty fees available to broadcast radio stations and Internet radio services operated by owners of broadcast outlets. Financial terms were not disclosed. In November 2012, Pandora filed a lawsuit in a federal district court seeking a license with terms available to Internet radio services under a settlement between the Radio Music Licensing Committee and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, which determined that each licensee would pay a royalty of 1.7 percent of their gross revenues. By comparison, Pandora handed over 4.1 percent of total 2012 revenues to its performance rights partners. Music publishers told Billboard that Pandora is "trying to turn that [RMLC/ASCAP] deal on its head" by acquiring KXMZ. "Pandora's stunt makes a mockery of the performing rights licenses and the rate court process," BMI said in the lawsuit, filed in the U.S. Southern District Federal Court in New York. In a separate statement, the organization--which represents more than 600,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers--said it is asking the court to set "reasonable, market-driven fees for Pandora" after direct negotiations with the company came to a halt. Billboard reports that during the National Music Publishers' Association's recent annual meeting, NMPA President David Israelite said, "Any shred of credibility that Pandora had as the songwriters' partner is now gone. They are waging war on songwriters… Instead of negotiating as a partner, Pandora has decided that instead it will pursue their business model through lawsuits and gimmicks, and will try to fraudulently sneak in the back door for a rate that wasn't meant for them." In a statement provided to Billboard, a Pandora spokesperson said "Pandora values and respects those who create music and seeks to pay a rate that is fair to all artists, and fairness needs to account both for what artists receive and what Pandora's competitors are asked to pay. In a good faith attempt to avoid a protracted disagreement, Pandora offered to pay ASCAP higher rates than it currently pays, but ASCAP refused, choosing instead to enable the publishers to try to extort even higher rates through a scheme of 'selective withdrawals.' At the same time, ASCAP agreed to the lower licensing rates with the RMLC, which was approved by the rate court, and extended these lower rates to virtually all of Pandora's competitors, including iHeartRadio, Pandora's largest competitor. This is not a case of Pandora trying to pay less. It is a case of publishers discriminating against Pandora." Pandora Radio offers personalized streaming music stations based on the listener's favorite artists, songs or composers. Last month, the firm reported first-quarter fiscal 2014 revenues of $125.5 million, a 55 percent year-over-year increase fueled by the continued growth of its mobile advertising efforts. Losses nevertheless widened to $28.6 million from $20.2 million during the year-ago period as content costs jumped 48 percent to $82.9 million. Listening on mobile now accounts for 79 percent of total listener hours, Pandora said. In late February, Pandora imposed a 40-hour monthly listening limit on its free mobile streaming service, a move to address mounting royalty fees. "Pandora's per-track royalty rates have increased more than 25 percent over the last three years, including 9 percent in 2013 alone and are scheduled to increase an additional 16 percent over the next two years," founder Tim Westergren said at that time. "After a close look at our overall listening, a 40-hour-per-month mobile listening limit allows us to manage these escalating costs with minimal listener disruption." In addition to ongoing royalty battles, Pandora must also face new competition from Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iTunes Radio, unveiled earlier this week and expected to roll out later this year in tandem with the overhauled iOS 7 mobile operating system. The free, ad-supported iTunes Radio closely recalls Pandora, promising listeners access to more than 200 Apple-curated featured stations and giving them the option to create their own stations based on favorite artists and songs. Users may also share stations with friends. Any song played through iTunes Radio may be purchased with one click from Apple's iTunes digital storefront, the music business' largest source of digital revenues with an estimated $4.3 billion in download sales in 2012. Google+ syncs notifications across platforms, updates Android app Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is updating its Google+ social networking platform to sync notifications across mobile and the desktop. "When you read a notification on one device, we'll mark it as read on your other devices," explains Google technical staffer Balaji Srinivasan. "Likewise, dismissing a notification (with a swipe or a click) does so everywhere, so you can say goodbye to annoying repeats." Google is updating the look and feel of Google+ notifications, introducing a new bell icon that alerts users to updates as well as an overhauled notifications tray that separates unread from previously read items. Google is initially rolling out the improvements to its Android application and the Web, with Google+ for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS to follow. In conjunction with the changes, Google updated the Android app to version 4.01, letting users delete images from the Photos view. The revamped Google+ app also lets users tap into a post to view the number of +1's, comments and reshares--in addition, the left-hand menu design is now more consistent with other Google apps. Google+ launched in mid-2011. The platform rivals Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) by giving users the flexibility to selectively share materials with friends and family sorted into circles. Google+ now ranks as the second-largest social platform worldwide with more than 500 million users but still trails far behind Facebook, which tops 1.1 billion monthly users across the globe, including 751 million mobile monthly active users. Report: Google faces EU probe over Android licensing Google is in the crosshairs of European regulators alleging that the company built up its market-leading Android mobile operating system by means of cut-rate licensing and exclusivity agreements. According to documents viewed by The Financial Times, European Union watchdogs are exploring charges that Google licensed Android software "below cost," with "potential requests by Google to cancel and/or delay the launch of smartphone devices" based on competing operating systems or shipped with rival mobile services. Investigators will also consider whether Google enforced exclusivity agreements with manufacturing partners to guarantee the pre-installation and placement of core Google services like YouTube. "Android is an open platform that fosters competition," Google said. "Handset makers, carriers and consumers can decide how to use Android, including which applications they want to use."
