Alstom, Intel Team to Create Next-gen Grid Architecture and Security

Paris-based electrical transmission giant Alstom Grid and Silicon Valley-based chipmaker Intel (News - Alert) have signed a global agreement to collaborate on solutions and technologies for smart grids and smart cities.

Together, they will focus on embedded intelligence and IT systems security. Today's electrical networks are evolving toward smart grids—complete with IT architectures that create “intelligence,” by using real-time information to manage electricity efficiently and reliably. Such information, shared in real-time, paves the way for the integration of renewable energies that are intermittent by nature and require real-time monitoring to harness energy when and where it is created.

The current pact is the fruit of a three-year, highly productive business relationship. For example, Alstom and fellow Paris-based Bouygues—which specializes in sustainable construction and facility management— already have collaborated with Intel Labs Europe on the EMBIX initiative. The project, which was launched in November 2011, offers a wide range of services with high added value — from audits for eco-districts that cover adoption of new environmental and regulatory requirements, to optimization of energy performance through the use of IT systems featuring the latest advances in smart grid technologies.

Patrick Plas, senior vice president for Power Electronics & Automation of Alstom Grid, commented, "We are very excited to team with Intel to tackle the challenges presented by embedded intelligence and smart grid security, two of the key game-changers for the deployment of future grids. Intel's subsidiary McAfee (News - Alert) will help us reach our next step in the smart grid challenge, with specialized know-how in software solutions for cybersecurity management and embedded technologies...Read More>>>
