Crocheted Cozy Turns Turtle into Bowser

Posted: 07 Jun 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Bowser

The king of the Koopas from Super Mario Bros. is simply too cute to attack now. Jennifer Olivarez describes the costume she crocheted:

For Make It! Challenge #5, Lisa Egolf challenged me to crochet a sweater for her turtle, Myrtle, so that he would be easy to spot when she lets him loose to play in the courtyard of the school where she teaches science. “I think bright yet manly colors would be best,” she said, because after all this Myrtle is male (don’t judge). So I set out to design the most masculine turtle sweater I could.

I hate to disappoint you--no, wait, I enjoy that--but this Mountain Dew bottle is actually a block of wood. There's none of the good stuff inside. But Danny Kissel's 38 inch tall sculpture carved with a chainsaw is an excellent design for a new size that PepsiCo should offer.

Soy Sauce Overdose

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 10:00 PM PDT

Soy sauce is tasty, but apparently it can also be deadly at high levels. Kids, here's why it's dumb to drink a quart of soy sauce as a dare:

After the man drank the soy sauce, he began twitching and having seizures, and the friends took him to an emergency room. That hospital administered anti-seizure medication, and he was already in a coma when he was taken to the hospital where Carlberg was working, the University of Virginia Medical Center, nearly four hours after the event.

"He didn't respond to any of the stimuli that we gave him," Carlberg said. "He had some clonus, which is just elevated reflexes. It's a sign that basically the nervous system wasn't working very well."

The team immediately began flushing the salt out of his system by administering a solution of water and the sugar dextrose through a nasal tube. When they placed the tube, streaks of brown material came out. Within a half hour, they pumped 1.5 gallons (6 liters) of sugar water into the man's body.

The man's sodium levels returned to normal after about five hours. He remained in a coma for three days, but woke up on his own.

Solar Powered Wheelchair

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 09:00 PM PDT

chair

Engineering students at the University of Virginia won first place in a design competition for World Cerebral Palsy Day. Their winning entry was this solar powered wheelchair which can run indefinitely at low speeds. Josie Pipkin of UVA Today reports:

The wheelchair concept was inspired by the design of retractable roofs on convertible cars. The chair uses lightweight and robust materials and high-efficiency solar cells with custom-fabricated solar panels that encompass over one square meter when deployed without adding significantly to its length, width, height or weight when stored. The wheelchair can operate for more than 4½ hours at a speed of 5 mph on a fully charged battery, a range increase of more than 40 percent over batteries alone, and can run indefinitely at a speed of 1 mph on solar power alone, without using the battery.

The solar panels charge batteries even under cloudy conditions and have the added benefit of providing shade for the wheelchair occupant on sunny days. The single switch operation means that anyone who can use a joystick can operate the chair. The overall design includes standard wheelchair amenities such as a seatbelt, armrests, footrest and adjustable seating. In addition, USB power outlets are provided to charge modern peripherals such as cellphones, GPS navigation, tablet computers and items such as a fan and a reading light.

World's Oldest Tumor

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 06:00 PM PDT

A Neanderthal bone fragment shows a cancerous tumor. Image: Monge J., Kricun M., Radovcic J., Radovcic D., Mann A., et al, PLoS ONE

There was not a lot of pesticides and environmental pollutants over 100,000 years ago, but that doesn't mean that Neanderthals didn't get tumors:

The discovery of a fibrous dysplasia in a Neanderthal rib is the earliest known bone tumor on record, predating other tumors by more than 100,000 years. The rib, recovered from a site in Krapina, Croatia, indicates that Neanderthals were susceptible to the same types of tumors modern-day humans get, despite living in a remarkably different environment.

"They didn't have pesticides, but they probably were sleeping in caves with burning fires," says David Frayer, an anthropologist at the University of Kansas and the co-author of a new paper about the discovery. "They were probably inhaling a lot of smoke from the caves. So the air was not completely free of pollutants—but certainly, these Neanderthals weren't smoking cigarettes."

Fans Pledge To Put A TARDIS In Orbit

There are a lot of celebrations going on for Doctor Who's big Fiftieth Anniversary, but none have seemed quite so outlandish as the new Kickstarter campaign that seeks to put a TARDIS into orbit for the occasion. So far the project is about a third of the way to its goal and with 23 days left, it seems pretty likely to achieve full funding.

EPA's Secret Man Cave

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 02:00 PM PDT

After a long day of protecting the environment, it's good to have a secret man cave for a little R&R! Here's what happened when an Environmental Protection Agency inspector general visited a warehouse ran by a government contractor and discovered a secret room:

EPA’s inspector general found contractors used partitions, screens and piled up boxes to hide the rooms from security cameras in the 70,000 square-foot building located in Landover, Md. The warehouse -- used for inventory storage -- is owned by the General Services Administration and leased to the EPA for about $750,000 per year. [...]

“The warehouse contained multiple unauthorized and hidden personal spaces created by and for the workers that included televisions, refrigerators, radios, microwaves, chairs and couches,” the IG report said. “These spaces contained personal items, including photos, pin ups, calendars, clothing, books, magazines and videos.”

16 Funny Restaurant, Coffee Shop and Bar Signs

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Have you ever seen a sign outside a restaurant, café or bar that made you decide that you just HAD to eat there? It takes a clever mind and a gifted artist to be able to come up with such brilliant signs, but here and there, the signs are so good they even manage to make it off the street and onto the internet where they can live forever. Here are a few of the greatest street-side dining and drinking signs ever spotted online.

Vinnie’s Pizza

Brooklyn pizzeria Vinnie’s Pizza is so proud of the artwork and puns on their daily specials board that they actually have a Tumblr dedicated to them. We covered some of their Game of Thrones specials back in March, since then they’ve made some great new designs, including a whole slew of Arrested Development specials.

A few months ago, the restaurant made a special Grumpy Cat menu that might have even made Tard happy.

Personally, I’m pretty big on the Pear and Loafing in Las Vegan options, even if vegan spare ribs sound like they might cause some fear and loathing in my stomach.

Not A Burger Stand

Getting 10% off is great and all, but that’s still less than your standard tip. On the other hand, getting two meals for free (even at an inexpensive place like Burbank’s Not A Burger Stand) is a pretty big deal. In fact, I know quite a few people who would agree to be body slammed if it meant getting a free meal and even I would be willing to body slam a willing “friend” if it meant a free meal.

Not A Burger Stand is king when it comes to offering discounts for ordering in the voice of certain geeky characters. At one point, ordering in the voice of Fozzie Bear could have earned you a 10% discount and delivering jokes as Fozzie may have even won you some rotten tomatoes. For May 4th, ordering in Yoda’s voice would score you a discount and dressing in Star Wars gear would earn you a free meal.

At one point in time, doing the Truffle Shuffle would save you 10%. On another day, you could save 10% by reporting your order as Ron Burgundy and score a free meal with any jazz flute performance.

Perhaps the board that the majority of Neatonauts would most appreciate is this Dalek one that promises a free meal if you arrive in a TARDIS.

Order in the Voice of Sean Connery

Sometimes you can tell a discount was created by bored employees who just need something entertaining to help them get through the day. Of course, any Sean Connery impression would be lacking without a “the-rapists” joke and that just seems awkward to work into a restaurant order, so the employees very well may have been disappointed by their discount offer by the end of the day.

Why Hello There

I can’t think of anything that makes me want a burger more than cats. Actually, that’s a lie, for some reason cats and burgers just make me think of a hairball burger, which makes me never want to eat again. Regardless, this sign spotted by Redditor kenpachi11 that features a well-read cat still makes me want to support the burger joint that put it out, even if that just means buying a bottle of soda.

Summer Is Coming

Did the “Red Wedding” episode of Game of Thrones get you down, well, remember, contrary to what the Starks always warn us, summer is coming -and that means cooling down with some a Venti passion tea lemonade. Even Joffery couldn’t have an attitude about something that refreshing.

Winter Is Coming

Oh no! Ned is back from the grave to remind us that winter is, in fact, coming. Oh, wait, he’s just back from the grave to recommend we order an eggnog latte when the weather cools down again. Gee, that’s much less creepy.

Hey, at least the artwork, by Justin Lawrence Devine, looks fantastic.

It Sure Beats A Tauntan

No matter how cold it gets in the winter, Flying Saucer Pizza Company promises to be warmer than a tauntan and much tastier. As if this sign and the restaurant’s name didn’t already emphasize how awesome this place is, then don’t miss the rest of the photos on That’s Nerdalicious, which show off the place’s great Borg statue and fantastic art featuring space-travelling pugs.

A Public Service Announcement

A lot of coffee shop owners are hesitant to take a stance on divisive public issues. Fortunately, Fayes is willing to put themselves out there no matter what the detractors think about their beliefs.

I can’t help but wonder how many people went in to this cafe just to screw with the toilet paper dispensers after seeing this sign spotted by Redditor suburbanite.

The Value of $1

It’s hard not to wonder if a slice of pizza should ever cost more than a dollar if you find a place that offers a great slice of pizza for a dollar. But that doesn’t make the use of memes to explore that thought any less fantastic.

Imaginary Friends Drink Free

The only problem with this sign is that those who would be able take advantage of the deal would never actually realize their friends were imaginary, which means adult Calvin would probably waste money all night buying drinks for a probably very threadbare Hobbes. This was spotted by Redditor stinkyrat who was excited to finally have a place where he could go with all of his friends.

9 Reasons to Drink Here

You probably won’t get syphillus, can stave off the zombies and meet Zuul at Cajun Mikes? Count me in. Apparently this ad also suckered in Redditor scansinboy too.

So, would you guys eat or drink at any of these joints and have you ever seen any hilarious eatery, café or tavern signs that could have blown these ones away?

The Bizarre Borders of the US and Canada

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 07:46 AM PDT

(Video Link)

Much of the border between the United States and Canada consists of the 49° north parallel line of latitude. But, due to the practical considerations of border demarcation during the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, the border between these two nations is actually ragged and inconsistent.  C.G.P. Grey shows us some of the geographical oddities that formed as a result.

Ron and Hermione Go To Prom

This year at prom, this delightful couple took advantage of the styles of Ron and Hermione, courtesy of the great sewing work of DeviantArt user TheDeluxeWar.

In a way, these prom outfits are a lot better than typical prom wear too because the lovely couple will get to rewear the clothing at the Otakon convention.

How Does This Tetris Pizza Stack Up?

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Sometimes things look like a great idea on paper, but in reality, the end result is a little disappointing. Such is the case with Tetris pizza, which not only looks good on paper, but also on pizza crust. Unfortunately, the baking process is not kind to Tetris pizza as this aspiring geek baker discovered.

Regardless of the outcome, the idea was great, as were the creator's aspirations. And for that, we salute you Denacem.
