In today's economy, we understand that it's already stressful enough finding employment, but can you imagine how much harder it would be if you had a criminal recod? Here at Ya Ya Creations, we take pride in our diverse background of employees, and we understand that everybody's situation is different. Today, we wanted to reveal a story of one of our employees, Allen Johnson. He has agreed for us to share his life, his struggles, and how he found a place within our company.
When we first met Allen, he was a social and friendly man in his early twenties, and although he did not have much of an education, he was well qualified to work within our warehouse. When we asked about whether he had any criminal record, his expression immediately changed. He came clean about having a felony record for theft and gang activity when he was 18 years old and went on to explain the situation leading up to it. Because he was over 18 years old, he had to do time in jail.
Allen's family never had much money, his mother died when he was 8, and his father has a health issue that allowed him to only work part time. Allen's family migrated from St. Kitts. He was the oldest of 2 brothers and a sister, and it was his responsibility to look after them. When he was 16, his father came down with an ailment that required hospitalization. He then had no choice but to leave school and begin working to support his family. His father eventually did recover, however the hospital bills were too much for him and his family to keep up with. They were on the brink of being evicted, on top of having to support for his younger siblings and father. He figured he could try to make things work by stealing electronics. He was immediately caught on his attempt and convicted for theft. Allen has mentioned how difficult it has been for him for finding employment.
We understand that nobody can be perfect, and people do go through rough times. We were not wrong in our decision. Allen quickly became one of our most hardworking and loyal employees, and has been for the past five years. He now currently holds the position of our Warehouse Supervisor, and is an excellent member of the Ya Ya Creations family.
"I am really thankful that Ya Ya gave me this opportunity to work here. What I have done in the past was troubled, and difficult, but now my family is doing a lot better, and my sister is actually starting college this year! Thank you!" - Allen
