(NYSE: CBS) agreed to extend their deadline for reaching a new retransmission-consent agreement until Monday, the MSO said it was forced to drop several TV stations owned by Journal Broadcast Group early Thursday. | Source: Journal Broadcast Group | "By law, Time Warner Cable cannot carry Journal's channels without their permission. Journal is withholding permission while demanding a huge increase in their compensation," TWC said in a statement regarding the move to drop Journal Broadcast stations in Wisconsin and Nebraska, including affiliates of NBC and CBS. In a message posted on its website, Journal Broadcast Group used analogies involving the price of coffee to explain the retrans dispute to viewers: "If you're the average customer of Time Warner Cable, you send them money that's equal to about 58 and a half cups of coffee each month." The company said it currently receives the equivalent of "less than a half a cup" of coffee from TWC and that the rate increase it is demanding works out to be "less than 1 percent of the value" of 58.5 cups of coffee. Time Warner Cable had dropped Journal Broadcast Group's MyNetwork TV affiliate in Palm Springs, Calif., last month, but was forced to keep carrying stations in other markets after the broadcaster invoked an FCC rule that prevents a blackout during a Nielsen sweeps period. TWC's retrans contract with CBS expired on June 30, but the companies have agreed to several extensions. The latest extension is set to expire at 5 p.m. ET July 29. TWC could lose CBS stations in New York, Los Angeles and Dallas if it isn't able to hammer out a new contract by then. CBS is continuing to warn TWC subscribers that they could soon lose its programming through messages posted on the websites of its TV stations, including New York flagship WCBS-TV. TWC spokeswoman Maureen Huff confirmed that the company is talking to other programmers about taking some of the prized channel positions that the CBS owned-and-operated stations occupy on its cable systems. WCBS has broadcast as channel No. 2 since the 1940s, and also occupies that channel number on cable systems in the New York area. "We have heard from several programmers, and are in discussions," Huff said regarding channel positioning. Another hardball tactic TWC could use would be to import CBS programming from affiliates in smaller markets, as it did last year during a dispute with Hearst Television. TWC imported the feed of Nexstar Broadcasting's Rochester, N.Y., CBS affiliate WROC-TV to its Louisville system during the dispute, replacing the feed for Hearst station WLKY-TV. While Nexstar sued TWC in an attempt to stop it from delivering the feeds from its stations to markets impacted by retrans blackouts, last summer the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit upheld a decision that allowed the practice. Comcast signs CEO Roberts to one-year contract extension Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) has signed Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts to a one-year contract extension, the MSO disclosed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Wednesday. Roberts, 53, earned $29.1 million in total compensation last year, including a cash salary of $2.8 million. He won't get a pay raise under the new contract, as the agreement "was amended solely to extend its term to June 30, 2014," according to the SEC filing. The Comcast chief also received a $2.8 million salary in 2010 and 2011. Comcast was founded by Roberts' father Ralph Roberts in 1963. Brian Roberts joined the company in 1981, and was 30 when he was named president in 1990. Comcast promoted Brian Roberts to CEO in 2002. Ralph Roberts, now 93, is still a Comcast director, and also holds the title of chairman emeritus. Google Fiber kicking off mobile marketing tour Google Fiber (Nasdaq: GOOG) said Wednesday that it is kicking off a mobile marketing tour for its pay TV and wideband Internet service, which it is hoping to use to recruit new subscribers. | Google's Mobile Fiber Space | The Internet giant has assigned employees to drive a pickup truck attached to a trailer that contains its Mobile Fiber Space as well as exhibits that demonstrate the set-tops it is using to deliver its pay TV service. The company said it will visit Matney Park in Kansas City, Kan., Thursday afternoon. Last year, Google opened a Google Fiber Space storefront in Kansas City, Mo., which it has used to market Google Fiber. While visitors to the Kansas City location can test drive its 1-Gig Internet service, Google isn't offering demonstrations of that product through the mobile tour. Instead, the laptops contained in the Mobile Fiber Space can be used by consumers to see if Google Fiber is available in their neighborhoods and to register for the service. "If you've been meaning to get to the Fiber Space but haven't had a chance yet, keep an eye on your local streets--we might be bringing our brand new Mobile Google Fiber Space to your neighborhood," Google Fiber Space Events Manager Annie Thompson wrote in a blog post Wednesday. Earlier this week, Google closed a deal to acquire iProvo in Provo, Utah, which it will use to launch Google Fiber in the city. It is currently marketing Google Fiber's Internet and pay TV service in the Kansas City area and also plans to expand to Austin, Texas.
