Enterprise communications predictions for 2013--did ON24 get it right?

Like many FierceEnterpriseCommunications readers, I'm a numbers guy, myself. I've done my stint as a research analyst (Aberdeen Group) and a research project manager (Computerworld), so a good survey report or market analysis always gets my attention.

I came across the ON24, Inc.'s predictions for enterprise communications top trends for 2013 the other day, and was curious how well they had done. ON24 is a leading player in the webcasting and virtual events space.

According to a spokesperson for ON24 at the time the predictions were announced in December, 2012, the top trends cited were "based on the trends the company observed from its more than 700 enterprise customers."

So what were the top trend predictions for 2013?

Not surprisingly, social media topped the list.

"Social media, the new interactivity protocol, will fuel virtual communications growth," the company predicted.

"Social media--and its integration with virtual communications platforms--will facilitate a transition from stand-alone virtual events and webcasts to persistent virtual environments in which communication occurs, virtually, on an ongoing basis. This will enhance engagement, foster the creation of online communities, and fuel the growth of the virtual communications market. The annual average market growth rate for the next five years will exceed 20 percent," it added.

Placing second in the predictions was online training, which ON24 said would "become the new normal."

"More training will go online than ever before," the company stated. "ON24's market research indicates that 74 percent of learning professionals are considering virtual learning environments in the next 6 to 12 months, and that 72 percent are considering training webinars."

Third up was mobile technology.

"Mobile will see equal footing with desktops for enterprise content consumption. Mobile will gain ground for enterprise content consumption. Mobile consumption jumped dramatically this past year--more than 300 percent. ON24 predicts mobile usage on its platform to increase another 100 percent in 2013."

One of the nice things about market research is that hardly anyone ever checks your math. They also rarely get the opportunity to reality check predictions for the future.

In the coming weeks I will take a look at various predictions for the enterprise communications market for 2013 to examine how well they have matched reality. In the meantime, I invite readers of FierceEnterpriseCommunications to drop me a quick note and let me know how well you think ON24 did (dweldon@fiercemarkets.com). - David

Today's Top News

1. Confusing messages on networking pros salary demand

Networking professionals seeking tools to negotiate their next job or raise may find themselves very confused on just how in demand they are, or what salaries they should be earning.

Recent reports on the hiring demand and the earnings potential of networking pros have reported very different findings. Depending on who you read, the salary changes this year for networking pros range from dramatic increases to quite flat. Since salary changes are a reflection of job demand, the same predictions can be drawn for job growth in this area.

Consider the optimistic outlook of national placement firm Robert Half International:

"Those looking to get ahead in the networking field, or considering the potential of a career in networking, will find motivation in a Robert Half Technology (RHT) survey (as reported by Network World) regarding the 15 U.S. IT job titles most expected to see an increase in starting salaries between 2012 and 2013. Of the 15 jobs listed by RHT, five of them land squarely within the realm of networking."

According to the Robert Half Technology list, the networking related positions in the top 15 include:

  • Wireless network engineer – projected to see a 7.9 percent increase, with starting salary ranges from $85,500 to $117,000
  • Network engineer – projected to see a 7.8 percent increase, with starting salary ranges from $80,750 to $116,250
  • Network architect – projected to see a 7.0 percent increase, with starting salary ranges from $102,250 to $146,500
  • Network manager – projected to see a 7 percent increase, with starting salary ranges from $88,500 to $122,500
  • Network administrator – projected to see a 6.8 percent increase, with starting salary ranges from $62,750 to $93,250

In contrast, consider the salary data recently reported by Information Week in its "2013 Networking and Data Center Management Salary Survey".

"Median base salaries for networking and data center pros remained essentially flat from 2012 to 2013," the Information Week report stated. "Base salaries for data center managers and data center staff rose a medium of 1.6 percent and 1.3 percent respectively."

"IT pros in the networking field didn't fare much better. Management saw salaries increase 1.3 percent, while staff saw a rise of 1.2 percent," said the survey

The Information Week report found that networking professionals make $80,000 on average, while networking managers average $95,000.

So where do the online job sites weigh in on all of this?

As one example, the job board Indeed.com reported that the average salary for a network administrator as of July 28, 2013 was $71,000.

Editor's note: Where do you fall?

FierceEnterpriseCommunications would like to know how you compare with the predictions above. Drop me a note and let me know if you think networking salaries are on the rise, flat lining or on the decline. Also, how do projected salary amounts for networking pros compare to your reality? 2. Siemens Enterprise Communications and NextPlane partner on federation services

A partnership was announced last week between Siemens Enterprise Communications and NextPlane UC Exchange Service, under which the NextPlace UC Exchange service will provide extended federation services for the Siemens OpenScape UC platform.

The arrangement means that Siemens Enterprise Communications customers that join the NextPlace UC Exchange will be able to seamlessly connect and collaborate with numerous other partner organizations through other UC platforms, including Microsoft, Cisco, IBM, Google, Open-Fire, Isode, eZuce and eJabberd.

Siemens is a leading provider of unified communications worldwide. NextPlane is the market leader in cloud-based federation services for UC.

In announcing the partnership, a spokesperson for Siemens said, "In addition to enabling Siemens Enterprise Communications customers to federate with their business partners using other UC platforms, NextPlane's UC Exchange also facilitates UC-to-social media federation, including Skype and Yahoo!, as well as enterprise social media networks, such as Salesforce Chatter and Microsoft Yammer, and public social media networks such as Twitter."

Siemens Enterprise Communications customers that join the UC Exchange will be able to have their end users share instant messages with their colleagues' business partners, supply chain vendors, third-party suppliers and customers as if they are all on the same platform, Siemens announced.

"The partnership with NextPlane gives Siemens Enterprise Communications the opportunity to expand OpenScape UC Suite's federation services, driving forward our leadership in the market," Siemen's senior vice president of global portfolio management at Siemens Enterprise Communications stated in the announcement. "This partnership further underscores our commitment to openness and supporting our customers' evolving communications business requirements."

3. IT managers have investment heads in the clouds

IT managers definitely have their heads in the clouds, as cloud computing is reportedly the number one area for IT investment over the next five years. That is the finding of new research by Compuware and Research in Action.

According to a survey of 468 IT decision makers, 17 percent of organizations report that the area of IT they most need to strengthen is that of cloud computing. That is followed by mobile IT investments (14 percent), business analytics, big data and in-memory technology (11 percent).

Putting their money where their mouth is, the same survey respondents said that actual IT investments will again be topped with cloud computing infrastructure spending (13 percent); followed by the renegotiation of outsourcing contracts (10 percent); and investing in big data business intelligence and analytics (9 percent).

So what do all these IT managers want to do in the cloud? Test applications and backup data are the top desired tasks, the survey revealed (cited by 24 percent of respondents). That was followed by private cloud implementation (17 percent) and public/hybrid cloud investment (15 percent). The top long-term activity was reported to be full cloud integration.

Clouds have a way of obscuring things, and a majority (79 percent) of survey respondents said they worry about hidden costs associated with cloud services.

4. New Zealanders learning to play nice in the cloud

A series of nationwide consultative workshops are underway this week in New Zealand, intended to help develop a Code of Practice for Cloud Computing.

The workshops, which are being held in Christchurch, are sponsored by the New Zealand Computer Society (NSCZ). The project is supported by several leading cloud computing providers, both in New Zealand and global players such as Google, Microsoft and Salesforce.com.

These workshops are intended to be a work in progress, and the NSCZ has invited anyone interested in the effort to participate in the process. They were developed after a series of industry discussions identified the need to address standards and accountability around cloud computing, according to a press release.

"As well as offering confidence to users of cloud computing, the CloudCode will show the international community that New Zealand is serious about good practice and standards in the cloud, and help build New Zealand's technology reputation globally," NZCS CEO and Cloud Steering Group Chairperson Paul Matthews said in a press release.

The first workshops will focus on a structure and approach of the cloud computing code. The public will then be invited to weigh in and help develop details for the code. Those interested in the workshops can visit the CloudCode website.
