A Tale of Two Sisters

When analysts look at subsidiary companies inside of holding companies, they refer to them as the daughters and the parent as the "Big Daddy."  Such businesses having some similarities or cross-sale opportunities are referred to as sister companies. More often than not, these sister companies are private and typically are of a similar size.  

 

Interestingly, two "parentless" sister companies trade as microcaps on the NYSE and, with few exceptions, are polar opposites. Is one a better buy than the other? Read on.

 

Dover Motorsports, Inc. (NYSE: DVD - $2.35) is a leading promoter of NASCAR-sanctioned and other motorsports events in the United States. Dover's subsidiaries own and operate Dover International Speedway in Dover, Delaware and Nashville Superspeedway near Nashville, Tennessee. The company recently regained NYSE listing compliance and hit a new high ahead of its financial results released yesterday that were generally in line with expectations.  Prospects are so-so for this NASCAR pure play, as it trades with low volume despite reaching a new high.
