Facebook mobile-ad boom soothes investors' jitters Facebook's mobile-advertising business now accounts for 41 cents of every dollar of the company's ad revenue, according to an earnings report. The news drove Facebook's shares up 17% in after-hours trading Wednesday, suggesting that investors believe the social network has figured out how to survive and thrive in the mobile-Internet world. "Facebook has discovered the formula to begin significantly extracting value from its 1.16 billion global users," said Ronald Josey of JMP Securities. | Twitter apologizes for using real names in fake endorsements Twitter was left with egg on its face this week after it emerged that the company had created and published mockups of product endorsements that showed real users posting enthusiastic tweets that they never wrote. The episode was apparently a small-scale gaffe rather than a broader effort to create fraudulent product endorsements. "This was not OK. Once we became aware of this mistake we took it down immediately," the company said in a blog post. | Chipotle Twitter chaos was "more hoax than hack," spokesman says Chipotle's Twitter account seemed to have been taken over this week by someone seeking tips on where to buy avocados, but the company says the bizarre episode was a deliberate PR stunt. The apparent hacking dovetailed with an online scavenger hunt that asked people to find recipes for guacamole, spokesman Chris Arnold says. "The idea was to do something with our social media that would get people talking. ... This is far more hoax than hack," he says.
