Facebook mobile-ad boom soothes investors' jitters
Facebook's mobile-advertising business now accounts for 41 cents of every dollar of the company's ad revenue, according to an earnings report. The news drove Facebook's shares up 17% in after-hours trading Wednesday, suggesting that investors believe the social network has figured out how to survive and thrive in the mobile-Internet world. "Facebook has discovered the formula to begin significantly extracting value from its 1.16 billion global users," said Ronald Josey of JMP Securities. Twitter apologizes for using real names in fake endorsements
Twitter was left with egg on its face this week after it emerged that the company had created and published mockups of product endorsements that showed real users posting enthusiastic tweets that they never wrote. The episode was apparently a small-scale gaffe rather than a broader effort to create fraudulent product endorsements. "This was not OK. Once we became aware of this mistake we took it down immediately," the company said in a blog post. GigaOm (7/24)

Twitter users are embracing the "favorite" button, a star icon that can be used to bookmark or privately applaud a tweet without broadcasting it to one's friends. The button was clicked about 1.6 billion times in May, four times more than in the same month a year earlier. The Wall Street Journal (tiered subscription model) (7/24)

Chipotle Twitter chaos was "more hoax than hack," spokesman says
Chipotle's Twitter account seemed to have been taken over this week by someone seeking tips on where to buy avocados, but the company says the bizarre episode was a deliberate PR stunt. The apparent hacking dovetailed with an online scavenger hunt that asked people to find recipes for guacamole, spokesman Chris Arnold says. "The idea was to do something with our social media that would get people talking. ... This is far more hoax than hack," he says. CNET (7/24)

Facebook, Twitter are increasingly common among Fortune 500 firms
About three-quarters of Fortune 500 companies have active Twitter accounts, 70% have Facebook profiles and a similar number use YouTube, according to a University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth report. All three networks are used by a greater share of Fortune 500 firms than a year earlier. Less than half of the companies use Instagram, Foursquare or Pinterest, and about a third have Google+ profiles. CNET (7/24)

We have ways of making you blog
Almost two-thirds of companies say they want to run a blog, but less than 10% of firms have a dedicated blogger on staff, so marketers need to persuade current employees to pick up the slack, David Spark writes. To motivate your colleagues and executives, try creating a scoreboard where people are awarded points for writing posts, for promoting their work on social channels or for commenting on and sharing one another's content. How social media marketers can stay compliant with new FTC rules
The Federal Trade Commission's latest social media guidelines send a clear message that regulators won't tolerate shenanigans from the expanding industry, writes Andy Sernovitz. If you can't figure out ways to make disclosures clear and obvious, or to explain the nature of brand-endorser relationships, then you're probably already crossing a line, Sernovitz writes. "These are good signs you shouldn't do it at all. The FTC says if you can't figure out how to do it legally, you shouldn't be doing it," he writes. SmartBrief/SmartBlog on Social Media (7/25)

Is the Fountain of Youth radioactive?
Residents of Punta Gorda, Fla., say their town is home to the original Fountain of Youth discovered by Ponce de Leon half a millennium ago. But analysis suggests the spring's waters, which stink of rotten eggs because of their high sulphur content, are also moderately radioactive, and don't meet federal safety guidelines. Attempts to shut down the spring have been consistently thwarted by local fans. National Geographic News (7/23)
