1. BlackBerry's PlayBook tablet chief set to leave company

The head of BlackBerry's (NASDAQ:BBRY) PlayBook tablet division is leaving the company, and his departure comes less than a month after CEO Thorsten Heins announced that BlackBerry would not upgrade to the device to its latest software, effectively orphaning the gadget.

David Smith, an executive vice president in charge of mobile computing, has resigned for personal reasons, a BlackBerry spokesman told the Wall Street Journal, which reported that the change happened within the past few weeks, according to an unnamed source. Smith "continues to come into work every day and is committed to working with BlackBerry through a proper transition."

Smith has been with the company for eight years and was put in charge of the PlayBook program a few months after the device launched in 2011. PlayBook was never the success BlackBerry hoped it would be, and in its initial debut was marred by what reviewers and analysts considered a lack of core features, including the lack of a native email client. The device also was not a hit with U.S. wireless carriers. In 2012 BlackBerry wrote down nearly $500 million in unsold PlayBook inventory.

In late June, Heins indicated that the PlayBook was not going to be a key part of the company's plans moving forward. "Our teams have spent a great deal of time and energy looking at solutions that could move the BlackBerry 10 experience to PlayBook. But unfortunately, I am not satisfied with the level of performance and user experience, and I made the difficult decision to stop these efforts and focus on our core hardware portfolio," Heins said during the company's last earnings conference call, according to a Seeking Alpha transcript. "We will, however, support Playbook on the existing software platforms and configurations."

The company shipped 100,000 PlayBook tablets in the fiscal first quarter, down from 370,000 in the fiscal fourth quarter and 260,000 in the year-ago period.

Separately, BlackBerry confirmed it cut 250 jobs related to research and development. "These employees were part of the New Product Testing Facility, a department that supports BlackBerry's manufacturing and R&D efforts," spokesman Alex Kinsella told AllThingsD. "This is part of the next stage of our turnaround plan to increase efficiencies and scale our company correctly for new opportunities in mobile computing." The company slashed around 5,000 jobs in 2012 as part of restructuring efforts.

BlackBerry is reportedly working on a new high-end smartphone, rumored to be called the A10, and rumors have indicated that at least Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and Sprint (NYSE:S) will support it. The A10 will reportedly sit at the top of BlackBerry's smartphone portfolio, pushing the already-launched Z10 and Q10 to the middle tier and the recently announced Q5, which is aimed at the emerging markets, to the low tier.

During BlackBerry's annual investor conference earlier this month, shareholders questioned Heins about the company's troubles in the U.S. market. One investor even called the U.S. launch of BlackBerry 10 "a disaster." Heins disagreed with that investor's characterization but admitted that the U.S. market is very competitive. Heins argued that BlackBerry is still in the early stages of recovery.

2. Qualcomm posts jump in profit, points to LTE strength and upcoming device wins

Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) posted gains in profit and revenue in its fiscal third quarter, and also raised its guidance for the full fiscal year thanks in part to growing demand for LTE devices and its Snapdragon chipsets. The company said it now has at least 500 Snapdragon-powered smartphones in the works.

For the quarter that ended June 30, Qualcomm posted net income of $1.58 billion, up 31 percent from $1.21 billion in the year-ago period. The company also reported that revenue climbed to $6.24 billion, up 35 percent year-over-year and 2 percent sequentially. Qualcomm also said that MSM chip shipments clocked in at 172 million units for the quarter, up 22 percent year-over-year and down 1 percent sequentially.

Qualcomm derives a great deal of revenue from companies licensing its technologies, especially CDMA, and reports figures on the units shipped and average selling prices of those devices from the prior quarter to calculate its licensing revenue. CFO George Davis said average and sales volumes were stronger than expected.

In the March quarter, Qualcomm said it tabulated an estimated 244 to 248 million unit shipments of 3G/4G devices at an estimated average selling price of $227 to $233 per unit, higher than the $214 to $220 in the quarter ended in December.

"The royalty business remains healthy and defensible, generating significant operating income and Qualcomm's well positioned to benefit from the TD-LTE ramp in China in 2H13," RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Sue wrote in a research note. "Chipset units are growing, however, QCT margins have declined from the 25.9% levels in F4Q12 to Qualcomm's QCT margin expectation of 16%-17% for F4Q13."

For the full fiscal year, Qualcomm bumped its revenue guidance to $24.3 billion to $25 billion, up from a previous range of $24 billion to $25 billion. "There's still very broad-based demand for smartphones and for chips," Davis told Bloomberg. "You've got a tremendous growth engine in the developing markets and you're still seeing good growth in developed markets."

Indeed, While Qualcomm is pushing its high-end Snapdragon 800 chipsets in developed markets in devices like Samsung Electronics' new Galaxy S4, capable of using carrier aggregation technology in LTE Advanced standards, the silicon maker is also looking to promote its lower-end Snapdragons chips in emerging markets like China and India.

"We are very excited about the types of devices that are going to come out," Qualcomm Technologies Executive Vice President Murthy Renduchintala told AllThingsD. He said at least 500 Snapdragon-powered smartphones and 40 tablets are in the works. Renduchintala also said Qualcomm will have more announcements geared toward emerging markets by year-end. "The holiday season is going to be a very exciting period for us," he said.

3. Google's new Nexus 7 to run on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile LTE

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), as had been rumored, unveiled a new version of its Nexus 7 Android tablet, including an unlocked version that can support the LTE networks of Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) and T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS). Previous Nexus-branded tablets, including the original Nexus 7 and the larger Nexus 10, did not support LTE.

Google's new Nexus 7

During a launch event Google also officially announced Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, the latest update to its Android platform. Google said that the new Nexus 7, made by Asus, will be the first device to run Android 4.3.

It's unclear why support for Sprint's (NYSE:S) LTE network is not available on the new gadget. A Sprint spokeswoman declined to comment. Verizon and AT&T both use 700 MHz spectrum for their LTE networks, and T-Mobile is using its 1700 MHz AWS spectrum for LTE, but Sprint's LTE network runs on the carrier's 1900 MHz band.

Hugo Barra, director of product management for Android, said the Wi-Fi-only versions of the new Nexus 7 will be available for $229 for the 16 GB model and $269 for the 32 GB model, starting July 30. A 32 GB LTE model will be available for $349 in the coming weeks, he said. The Wi-Fi models will be available online from Google Play and also at a range of retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, OfficeMax, RadioShack, Staples and Walmart. Google did not reveal distribution for the LTE model.

Google said that it will roll out the Nexus 7 to international markets in the next few weeks, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, South Korea and Spain.

The new Nexus 7 features a slimmer design than the original, and also sports beefier specs. The new 7-inch tablet has a "true 1080p" HD resolution with 1920 x 1200 pixels, and features a quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 5-megapxiel camera, 1.2-megapxiel front-facing camera and dual stereo speakers with Fraunhofer virtual surround sound.

At the start of the event, Google Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai, who oversees Android as well as the company's Chrome efforts, said that Android tablet activations totaled around 10 million at the end of 2012, but he said that number has now ballooned to 70 million. He said the original Nexus 7 has accounted for more than 10 percent of all Android tablet sales, and that Android now makes up around half of all global tablet sales, with the leader continuing to be Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad.

4. Google, FTC finalize settlement over Motorola patents

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) finalized its settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, under which Google has agreed to no longer seek sales bans on products that infringe on the standards-essential patents it owns. The FTC set up an arbitration process for patent complaint as part of the settlement.

The settlement between Google and the FTC, which was initially announced in January, was the result of a 20-month antitrust investigation by the FTC into Google's business practices. The settlement was finalized after the FTC received 25 comments from competitors and interest groups. The FTC concluded Google was not harming the Internet search market through its practices.

However, part of the investigation revolved around Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility, and Google's use of Motorola's patents. In essence, the FTC found Google guilty of abusing its patents for wireless standards, which are supposed to be licensed at reasonable royalty rates to others. As part of the settlement, Google agreed to license its standards patents on FRAND, or fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory, terms.

The FTC settlement has established an arbitration program that makes it more difficult for Google to use the threat of injunctions in patent battles.  "The order strikes a balance. It enables Google and implementers to negotiate a FRAND rate while protecting both parties from opportunistic behavior that is inconsistent with the FRAND agreement," the FTC said in a letter explaining the settlement. "An implementer can negotiate licensing terms without facing the threat of an injunction, but Google is not barred from responding to an implementer that misuses the protections in the order to delay rather than facilitate entering into a FRAND license."

Google last year said it valued Motorola's "patents and developed technology" at $5.5 billion, according to a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Google acquired a portfolio of more than 17,000 wireless patents when it bought Motorola, and had said it would use the patents to shield licensees of its Android software from patent litigation, but that strategy has so far had a mixed record in court.

The European Commission sent a preliminary antitrust complaint to Motorola, alleging that the company is abusing its dominant position by seeking an injunction against Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) in Germany for infringing on its wireless standards patents.

Of late, Google has focused less on Motorola's patents and more on reviving the company's devices business. Motorola is expected to announce its new flagship smartphone, the Moto X, at an event on Aug. 1, part of a series of devices the unit will unveil in the coming months. The company has also embarked on a major new advertising campaign for the Moto X, which will be assembled in a plant in Ft. Worth, Texas.

5. Ericsson cuts deal for BSS consultancy Telcocell, expands North American foothold

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) continues to build up its services business, agreeing to acquire Toronto-based consulting company Telcocell, which specializes in business support systems (BSS), Amdocs platforms, custom development and software as a service (SaaS).

Per Borgklint, Ericsson

Borgklint (Image source: Ericsson)

Ericsson said it will absorb some 200 Telcocell employees when the acquisition closes next quarter. Financial terms of the purchase were not disclosed.

The Telcocell acquisition complements Ericsson's earlier takeover of operational support system (OSS) and BSS vendor Telcordia via a $1.15 billion agreeement announced in June 2011. Further, this most recent deal highlights how Ericsson continues to expand its reach while rival infrastructure providers contract their offerings to focus to a few core competencies. Nokia Siemens Networks, for example, sold off its BSS unit to Toronto-based Redknee in March 2013.

The Telcocell takeover is strategic for Ericsson. Not only is the company building up its software and services offerings as the traditional telecom hardware market continues to slide, but it is also forging a stronger presence in North America. "The acquisition complements Ericsson's offering to telecom and cable customers particularly in North America," said the company.

Also reflecting the growing importance of the region to Ericsson, the vendor announced last week that it will base Per Borgklint, head of its support solutions business unit and a member of the company's executive leadership team, in Silicon Valley. The support solutions unit develops software-based solutions for operations and business support systems (OSS and BSS), real-time enablement, multi-screen and on-demand TV, compression and m-commerce.

"North America is the driver behind much of the innovation in the ongoing convergence of telecom, IT and media. Our operations in Silicon Valley, where the important ecosystem of software developers, media and other key players are present, ensure that we can fully explore the opportunities for Ericsson across our entire business," said Hans Vestberg, company president and CEO.

According to Borgklint, 20 percent of the support solutions business unit's sales came from North America during 2012. "With the acquisitions of ConceptWave, Telcordia and most recently Mediaroom, our overall operations in North America are growing in significance," he added.

Ericsson has some 15,000 employees in North America, with more than 1,100 in Silicon Valley.

SPOTLIGHT ON... CEA: Smartphones, tablets to make up 1/3 of U.S. consumer electronics sales this year

Even with the economy still sluggish, the Consumer Electronics Association said it expects sales of smartphones and tablets to continue to drive U.S. consumer electronics (CE) industry growth. The trade group expects that sales in two device categories alone will represent 32.2 percent of CE industry revenue in 2013. Smartphone unit shipments are projected to reach 127 million this year and smartphone revenues are expected to exceed $37.8 billion in 2013, which would represent a 14 percent increase year-over-year. Tablet unit sales are projected to reach 87.1 million this year and revenues expected to surpass $27.3 billion. However, overall the U.S. CE industry is expected to reach $202.6 billion this year, stable compared to 2012 sales, with just 0.2 percent growth. That forecast is nearly three points lower than the CEA previously projected by CEA in January.

"Although the consumer tech industry is largely immune to the degree of turmoil experienced by other sectors, CE is not entirely impervious to the bigger picture," Shawn DuBravac, chief economist and senior director of research at CEA, said in a statement. "The front half of 2013 brought slower than anticipated economic growth in the U.S. driven by the fiscal drag of sequestration and expiration of the payroll tax, while the back half brings more tempered expectations for economic growth. However, the rest of 2013 should find itself on firmer footing, with several forthcoming product launches which should propel growth in the second half of 2013, through the holiday season and into 2014." Lowenstein's View: Smartphone ennui -- and what to do about it

Mark Lowenstein

Despite positive quarterly results from Apple and Samsung, it is clear that smartphone sales growth in developed economies is leveling off. The next wave of growth will come from emerging markets, which is why Apple, for example, is as focused on developing a high quality, but lower cost device for Asia and Latin/South America as it is on the next wow-factor phone for the U.S. and other developed countries. We are in a new, market segmentation mode for smartphones: devices for different price points, and screen size choices to meet form factor preferences.

I'd argue that there has not been a "must have" new device for quite some time. Witness how sales of the iPhone 4/4S have held up so well despite the fact that the iPhone 5 (whose main distinguishing feature is LTE) has been available for nearly a year. There have been loads of other high-end devices launched over the past year, but none have been of the "change your life, pay the ETF, pawn your existing phone off on your spouse or kid" variety. Fact is, any mid-tier or better smartphone in the market today is pretty fabulous. It does just about anything you would want or need it to do. Nobody's running out to buy the S4 because of Air Gesture. The announcement yesterday of a trio of new Motorola Droid devices had, to me, a PC-like flavor to it -- solid design, faster processors, better battery life – which is why the reaction among handset enthusiasts and bloggers was somewhat of a yawn. I'd actually credit the Nokia Lumia series as among the best devices introduced over the past year, from the standpoint of innovative UI, form factor, and unique features (social network integration, fantastic map/navigation capability, and imaging advancements). Even so, it's been hard for Nokia (and the Windows platform) to gain substantial share, as consumers are wedded to their ecosystem and their apps. Most consumers think the phone they have today is pretty great. Ask them what more they want and they'd probably respond: "better, faster networks, improved battery life, and cheaper service."

So, what might re-invigorate the handset market? Innovation on the hardware side is getting tougher, since phones can't get much thinner, lighter, or even zippier than they are today, without making a sacrifice in another area. Gesture recognition is touted as one of the "next big things" but I think its utility on a small screen device is overstated, plus it will take awhile to really get it right.

There's 20 percent or so of the market who will always want and be willing to pay top dollar for the latest and greatest, just because. There are others who say that the "black slab" is what we've got, and the locus of innovation will be highly software-centric. For example, will iOS 7 be enough to drive an uptick in iPhone market share, even if there are no dramatic changes in hardware design (except perhaps more options in screen size)?

I believe the next device that really breaks out will focus on the totality of the user experience. This will include evolution in hardware design and UI, but will also be more reflective of the breadth of digital devices we own and the changes they've wrought on personal productivity and entertainment. The themes are:...Continued
