As one of the nation's largest delivery companies—with more than 96,000 vehicles in its fleet—United Parcel Service (UPS) is making a difference in reducing oil use by improving the efficiency of its trucks. Yet they continue supporting Fueling California, a Chevron-funded effort to derail California's leading clean fuel policies. California's policies can serve as a model for reduced oil use across the nation—if they're kept strong. How can I better explain to people that "little things" like leaving your car running in a parking lot really do have big impacts on the environment (and on their wallets)? —Rani Kokatnur, Lompoc, CA There is no doubt that gasoline used while idling in a parking lot is simply wasted. An idling car will use up to a half gallon of gasoline per hour. That means that if you idle your car for just 10 minutes a day while dropping off and picking up kids from school or childcare, you will waste up to 20 gallons of gas over the course of the year.
