| Why Stocks Move the Way
Ever since I entered the investment business in July 1989, I learned quickly that when it comes to our money and investing, we return to our childhood habits.
For those who are parents, I suspect you will not soon forget the "why" stage of your children. Every question began with the word "why" and they were endless. Moreover, you felt stupid when you didn't know the answer to something you should have known. So what did you do? You fudged it or answered indirectly.
With investors of all sizes and experience, the inevitable questions arise many times a day. Why is the stock down? Why is it up? Then comes the inevitable. Where do you think it will go in the next? What should I do if or when...?

School's Out But This Stock Is In
I had the opportunity to meet with a successful microcap and small-cap investor. We shared stories about wine, women, song and stocks. About halfway through the conversation, the gentleman (and believe me, I use that term loosely) admitted that in his early years of investing, gains were hard to come by while losses dominated his portfolio.
Yet today, he is a very wealthy man as a direct result of his ability to pick stocks.
I asked him, "What changed?"
He replied by telling me that it finally hit him one day that he misunderstood pundits' guidance. And once he changed his approach, he bought the right stocks at the right time and learned not to be greedy as stocks move higher. Moreover, he set a limit on losses that had a major impact as well.
