Sprint pushes back Network Vision completion date to mid-2014 Sprint (NYSE:S) plans to finish its deployment of its Network Vision network equipment by the middle of 2014, later than it had previously indicated, according to a securities filing. According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Sprint said "further deployments of Network Vision technology, including LTE market launches and enhancements of our 3G technology, are expected to continue through the middle of 2014." The carrier has never given an exact date for when it would finish its Network Vision deployment on 38,000 cell sites, but previously executives have indicated that most of the work would be done by late 2013 or early 2014. Sprint began Network Vision in early 2012, and the project has involved the deployment of multi-mode base stations, the (now-completed) shutdown of its Nextel iDEN network, refarming of spectrum, improving CDMA coverage and the deployment of LTE, among other things. "We expect this to be an important year for Sprint with the Nextel network shutting down and the modernization of the network expected to be substantially complete by the end of the year," Steve Elfman, president of network operations at Sprint, said when discussing Sprint's first-quarter results in late April, according to a Seeking Alpha transcript. "We have always said we would be substantially wrapped up at the end of the year and have some deployment into 2014," Sprint spokeswoman Kelly Schlageter told FierceWireless. During the company's second-quarter earnings conference call, Elfman said Sprint had made solid progress on the Network Vision program during the quarter, including the shutdown of the iDEN network. There are now more than 20,000 Network Vision sites on the air, compared to more than 13,500 Sprint reported with its first-quarter results. The company said it now counts 30,000 sites that are ready for construction, are in the midst of construction or are already finished. Sprint also said it remains on track to cover 200 million POPs with LTE by year-end. The company plans to begin deploying LTE on its refarmed 800 MHz spectrum in the late third quarter and Elfman said Sprint will be deploying 800 MHz LTE throughout next year. Sprint also announced plans to deploy Clearwire's 2.5 GHz spectrum on all 38,000 of its planned Network Vision sites and even more sites than that in a nationwide rollout. Previously, Sprint had said it would use Clearwire's spectrum as a "hotspot" LTE network to offload traffic in urban markets. That additional work could be a factor in pushing out Sprint's Network Vision timetable. Sprint has been racing to build out its LTE network to catch up with larger rivals. Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) now covers 301 million POPs with LTE. By the end of the year, AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) plans to cover 270 million POPs with LTE and T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS) plans to cover at least 200 million POPs with LTE. Interestingly, in the filing Sprint also said it has been "experiencing increased data usage driven by more subscribers on the Sprint platform and a continuing shift in our subscriber base to smartphones, which has required additional capital expenditures of legacy 3G Sprint platform equipment (legacy equipment). As we deploy Network Vision, we intend to maximize the use of previously deployed legacy equipment when possible; however, based on our capacity needs during the implementation period of Network Vision, we expect additional legacy equipment expenditures that will not be utilized beyond the final deployment of Network Vision's multi-mode technology, which is expected to continue through the middle of 2014." Schlageter said that Sprint's increased 3G data usage "are consistent with the industry and we have seen a jump in data usage nationwide over the past couple of years and have been adding capacity. Of course, as we stand up [Network Vision] in a market, we scale back capacity adds on the legacy network." Sprint has made its unlimited data service a cornerstone of its marketing message. FreedomPop crosses 100K subs, adds support for Sprint's LTE network Sprint (NYSE:S) MVNO FreedomPop now has more than 100,000 subscribers and is adding support for Sprint's LTE network, the latest evolution in data services for the freemium mobile broadband provider. | | FreedomSpot 5580 | The MVNO has not previously disclosed how many subscribers it has since launching last year, but according to GigaOM, that figure is now more than 100,000. Coinciding with the milestone, the company announced a new mobile hotspot, the FreedomSpot 5580, for $150 (Sprint sells the device for $250). Previously, FreedomPop's service had only worked on Clearwire's mobile WiMAX network, but FreedomPop has long hinted it would move to Sprint's LTE network (Sprint acquired Clearwire in July, and plans to expand its LTE network to cover 200 million POPs by year-end). FreedomPop has said that its business model, which relies on providing a free tier of service in the hopes that users will purchase additional service and other add-ons, has resulted gross margins of over 50 percent. The new device comes with the same offer as FreedomPop's previous devices: 500 MB of LTE data for free per month. FreedomPop lets users share and receive additional bandwidth each month from friends, as well as earn data by participating in marketing offers. According to GigaOM, the company said more than 55 percent of its subscribers are signed up for a free plan. Also on the horizon is a voice and texting service, which FreedomPop has yet to launch. "The Freedom Phone will launch very soon--right around the Labor Day timeframe," a company representative told The Verge. According to AllThingsD, the phone service will be coming in six to eight weeks. FreedomPop plans to offer unlimited texting and 200 VoIP-based voice calling minutes for free to select Android phone users. Importantly, FreedomPop has said the data generated from the voice calls and texts won't count against the free 500 MB of data per month the company already provides users. Additionally, FreedomPop has said its customers will also be able to place unlimited calls to each other under the new offering. The company will sell an unlimited calling option for $9.99 per month, and will offer a less expensive tier of voice calling minutes for an as-yet-to-be-determined price. FreedomPop's service is likely powered by textPlus--FreedomPop inked an agreement with textPlus for voice and messaging services in January--but FreedomPop has declined to confirm whether textPlus is the vendor for its texting and voice service. FreedomPop also plans to start selling phones. The company told Forbes in June it will begin selling refurbished HTC Evo 4G Android phones within the next few months. The company has also said it will also sell the Samsung Galaxy S II and S III later this summer, too. And FreedomPop will eventually allow its customers to bring any Sprint device to the FreedomPop service through Sprint's previously announced bring-your-own-device MVNO program. Meanwhile, another company, TextNow, wants to move from a Wi-Fi-based messaging and calling app to a more wide-ranging mobile service, according to AllThingsD. TextNow will charge $18.99 per month for 500 MB of data, unlimited texting and incoming calls, as well as 750 minutes of outgoing calls. Like fellow Sprint MVNO Republic Wireless, the company will use Sprint's network in areas where customers can't access Wi-Fi. "From Day One, our biggest priority has been to make smartphone service better and more affordable for everyone," Derek Ting, CEO of TextNow parent Enflick, told AllThingsD. "The announcement of TextNow mobile phone service--combined with our recent launch of Mi-Fi--marks a big milestone toward accomplishing this mission and making it affordable for every person to have a cellphone in his or her pocket." Analysts: Carriers need to get creative to get non-smartphone subs to convert Although smartphone penetration is still growing in many markets in Europe and the United States, carriers will need to get increasingly creative to get those remaining non-smartphone users to convert over to smartphones, which have higher average revenue per user, according to a new study by Analysys Mason. According to the research firm, which recently surveyed 6,600 consumers in the United States, France, Germany, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom, 52 percent of respondents with a mobile handset had a smartphone. However, there are some signs that the market is starting to saturate, with the smartphone share of handsets purchased in the past six months apparently declining in France and Spain, the markets with the highest smartphone adoption. Further, the percentage of respondents aged 18 to 24 who owned or regularly used a smartphone increased from 64 percent in October 2011 to 77 percent in October 2012, an indication that carriers will need to aggressively target older users if they want to continue to drive smartphone adoption. While nearly half of the respondents in the survey who owned a handset said they would definitely buy a smartphone as their next device (up from 30 percent last year), of those who do not own a smartphone, fully 40 percent indicated that they do not plan to (or are unsure whether they will) purchase a smartphone next time they acquire a device, even if a smartphone costs the same as a non-smartphone. Prices are coming down for smartphones across the board as adoption surges, component prices drop and OEMs discount older flagship models. However, price was not cited as much of a barrier to adoption, according to Analysys Mason. Of the survey respondents who do not own a smartphone, the majority (61 percent) were on prepaid or SIM-only subscriptions, compared with only 36 percent of smartphone users. The survey found those who do not own a smartphone are also generally older, with 50 percent of the non-smartphone users being older than 55, while only 17 percent of smartphone users were in this age group. As a result, carriers are faced with several challenges, Analysts Mason noted, adding that handset subsidies do not serve as an incentive in the prepaid and SIM-only market. Further, handset upgrade programs, which have recently been introduced in the U.S. market by T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS), AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) and Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), likely won't appeal to older, non-smartphone users who do not care as much about getting the latest and greatest devices. The survey shows that 42 percent of non-smartphone respondents have had their handset for more than two years, compared to 7 percent of smartphone respondents. Most non-smartphone users are attracted to cheaper rate plans, the research firm noted, and carriers will need to a better job of showing the benefits of owning a smartphone and explaining how mobile data prices are structured in order to avoid bill shock, if they hope to get these users to convert. Analysys Mason noted that recent innovative carrier approaches include offering to pay-as-you-go SIM customers the ability to purchase higher amounts of data, which could incentivize them to switch to a smartphone. The firm also noted that non-smartphone users place a premium on voice and messaging services, and that carriers could pre-load over-the-top (OTT) messaging or social network apps to attract non-smartphone users. Samsung's Shin: Tizen will power more than just mobile devices Samsung Electronics co-CEO JK Shin said the open-source Tizen operating system will expand beyond mobile devices to power a host of connected devices across multiple industry verticals. | | Samsung's JK Shin | "There are many convergences not only among IT gadgets, including smartphones, tablets, PCs and cameras, but also among different industries like cars, [biotech] or banks," Shin told CNet. "Cross-convergence is the one [area] Samsung can do best since we do have various parts and finished products." Shin's comments reiterated Samsung's commitment to Tizen, which combines open-source technologies with a standards-based HTML5 development environment, enabling the creation of device-independent, cross-platform mobile applications. Samsung recently said it would delay the introduction of its first Tizen smartphone to the fourth quarter of 2013, fueling speculation the company's enthusiasm for the platform could be waning. Samsung plans to offer Tizen devices alongside smartphones powered by Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 8. Shin previously stated that Google's decision to acquire rival handset maker Motorola Mobility has not dampened Samsung's interest in Android: "We have a good relationship with Google," he said in March, explaining that Samsung wants to offer a number of different mobile operating system choices to consumers and enterprise clients. Shin also teased imminent news on Samsung's tablet efforts. "There will be good news on the tablet soon," he said. "Please wait and see." C Spire nabs $6M worth of PCS spectrum from Leap C Spire Wireless recently purchased PCS spectrum from Leap Wireless (NASDAQ:LEAP), an indication that it continues to beef up its coverage in its core markets even as regional wireless carriers continue to fade from the industry. According to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing from Leap, on June 4 Leap struck a deal with C Spire to sell its 10 MHz PCS wireless license in Biloxi, Miss., for $6 million to C Spire. The closing of the transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including the consent of the FCC. Although the transaction is relatively small in the world of spectrum deals (for example, T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS) said in June it will buy 10 MHz of AWS spectrum from U.S. Cellular (NYSE:USM) for $308 million in cash), it is an indication that C Spire is not giving up on improving its spectrum position even as smaller carriers are being acquired. AT&T announced plans late last month to purchase the wireless assets and customers of Iowa-based Long Lines, following its announcement that it would purchase Leap in a $1.2 billion deal. In the wake of AT&T's proposed acquisition of Leap, privately held C Spire strongly indicated that it is worried about further industry consolidation. "Our company has successfully operated in the wireless business since 1988 as a privately-held wireless provider," C Spire spokesman Dave Miller told FierceWireless in July. "We welcomed many new companies to the industry in the 1990's and we're disturbed by the current trend of smaller operators being acquired. Our industry needs more competition, not more consolidation, and C Spire intends to continue aggressively competing as an independent company." C Spire said in May it will expand its LTE coverage area in Mississippi later this summer and also will launch LTE in parts of Alabama and Florida by year-end. The company said that beginning this month it will expand LTE in Mississippi. The new expansion covers 71 cities and 51 counties in the state. C Spire also recently launched new unlimited plans for individual customers and focused on the option to let customers buy "online video passes" to watch streaming video from their devices when they want to do so. Green telcos: How carriers are saving energy in their networks "Green" is buzzword not just in the wireless and telecom markets, but in numerous fields, from construction to transportation, as companies seek to be both more energy efficient and environmentally responsible. Energy savings are a key component of Sprint's (NYSE:S) Network Vision project, for example. However, some critics charge that companies are hardly following the green ethic. How much effort are telecoms putting forth to reduce their energy demands while delivering services? As carriers increase the capacity of wireline networks to meet ever-increasing demand, the energy required to fulfill that capacity is also rising exponentially. That's part of the reason the Green Touch Consortium was formed to find ways to reduce energy expenditure. The consortium suggested it is possible to reduce the net energy consumption in communications networks up to 90 percent by 2020 through a combination of "technologies, architectures, components, algorithms and protocols," according to a recent whitepaper. Our sister publication FierceTelecom has taken an in-depth look at how telcos are doing at making their networks more green. Article Irving: Freeing government airwaves for commercial wireless requires much more - now | | Larry Irving | In the 1800s there were political fights over land rights. In the 1900s we saw an increasing number of political fights over water rights. Today, the new fight in Washington is over rights to spectrum, the invisible airwaves that carry signals of wireless devices such as cellphones, smartphones and tablets. The federal government holds the rights to more spectrum than any other user. Private companies need more spectrum to meet increasing consumer demand for wireless technology and to drive innovation. Over the past two years President Obama repeatedly has called on federal government users to identify and hand over to the private sector more spectrum for use by consumers, businesses and innovators. Despite the President's leadership and industry requests, progress in moving spectrum from government to private sector use has been very slow. Some time ago wireless carriers identified a band of spectrum (1755 to 1780 MHz) that would have great value to American consumers and asked the Defense Department to relocate the programs and operations the military has in those bands. In a recent letter to the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration, the Defense Department tentatively indicated that it could move some of its operations if certain conditions were met. Those conditions include payment of $3.5 billion to relocate and upgrade some programs, including combat training systems and drone training systems and sharing spectrum in a band that currently is occupied by television broadcasters...Continued More Read more about: spectrum back to top | > Getting started with carrier WiFi - what's it take for a great user experience? - August 27th, 11am ET/ 8am PT Meeting customer expectations has never been more challenging than it is today.
