Charter, Cablevision exit Canoe Ventures consortium Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR) and Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) are no longer members of the Canoe Ventures advanced advertising consortium, cable MSO and Canoe executives told FierceCable this week. Charter and Cablevision were founding members of Canoe, which initially focused on building a platform for interactive TV programming and advertising when it debuted in 2008. In February 2012, Canoe announced that it would cut 120 employees and switch its focus to building a platform that would make it easier for cable networks and broadcasters to place ads in video-on-demand programming using dynamic ad insertion technology. The exit of Charter and Cablevision from the consortium occurred before it announced the strategy change last year, said Chris Pizzurro, head of sales and marketing at Canoe. While Canoe never announced that the MSOs had left the consortium, Pizzurro noted that it no longer lists Cablevision and Charter as members on its website. Canoe co-founders Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), Cox Communications and Bright House Networks continue to back the consortium, and Pizzurro said Canoe is making progress helping the MSOs and programmers insert dynamic ads into VOD programs. He said dynamic ad insertion is available in more than 28 million households, including cable systems owned by a "couple" of the venture's MSO founders. Comcast and Time Warner Cable have announced previously that they offer dynamic ad-insertion using technology supplied by BlackArrow. Cox spokesman Todd Smith said the MSO has tested dynamic ad insertion in a couple of markets and plans to launch DAI on its cable systems "sometime in 2014." Charter announced in 2006 that it was testing dynamic ad insertion. And Cablevision, which was one of the first cable MSOs to launch advanced advertising products, offers dynamic ad insertion on its cable systems in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. "Charter is supportive of their [Canoe's] mission but not engaged in any work or projects with them," said spokeswoman Anita Lamont. Canoe, which has built a clearinghouse that programmers can use to manage VOD advertising, is currently handling dynamic ad insertion for 40 networks and 100 ad campaigns, Pizzurro said. Programmers that rely on Canoe include NBCUniversal, Scripps Networks Interactive and Fox Networks. Pizzurro said Canoe plans to soon announce that it will be handing VOD ad transactions for more than 90 networks. Pizzurro wouldn't name the new networks, but it's worth noting that programmers that currently offer popular ad-supported VOD content on cable systems include AMC Networks (Nasdaq: AMCX), Viacom (NYSE: VIA) and Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS). WOW halts Time Warner Cable overbuild in Ohio town after residents complain about damage WideOpenWest said it halted expansion of its network in Brunswick, Ohio, after residents in the Cleveland suburb complained the cable overbuilder didn't ask for permission to dig trenches in their yards. WOW halted the overbuild of Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and Frontier Communications (Nasdaq: FTR) on Aug. 9, agreeing to wait until it obtains legal easements, Dan Gladish, the city's chief building official, told The Medina-Gazette. The newspaper ran a photo Thursday of mounds of dirt near trenches that a Frontier crew dug to repair telephone lines it said were damaged by WOW. While the cable franchise that Brunswick granted WOW in April lets it lay cable on public rights-of-way, Ohio law requires easements to dig trenches on private property. WOW, which debuted in 1999, has grown to more than 680,000 video subscribers through acquisitions and overbuilds of cable systems owned by Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable and other MSOs. It reported Wednesday that it lost 8,700 video subscribers in the second quarter. It also counts 709,100 broadband subscribers, gaining 2,300 in Q2. Consumer complaints about property damage and eyesores from the installation of above-ground equipment have increased in recent years as AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and other telcos have expanded their networks to offer pay TV and broadband service. AT&T was forced to temporarily halt construction for its U-verse rollout in San Francisco in 2011 after residents complained about the impact that its refrigerator-sized equipment pedestals were having on the aesthetics of their neighborhoods. Comcast has also received complaints about construction for its network upgrades. Last year, it agreed to bury the fiber-optic-gear it had placed in utility boxes installed on sidewalks in Washington, D.C.'s, historic Georgetown district after receiving complaints from residents. AT&T pushes to expand U-verse to Park Ridge, Ill. AT&T (NYSE: T) is attempting to expand its U-verse TV and Internet service to Park Ridge, Ill., but it continues to face challenges reaching an agreement involving equipment pedestals it needs to install to launch service in the affluent Chicago suburb. Earlier this week, AT&T offered to pay the city $2,000 for each of the refrigerator-sized VRAD (video relay access devices) cabinets it needs to place in order to compete with incumbent Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC). That's $500 more per VRAD than AT&T, which hopes to install 22 of the devices over the next two years, offered the city when it first submitted a proposal in 2009. AT&T said the city could spend the VRAD fees on landscaping or screens that could help mask the devices. But Park Ridge officials complained that AT&T is asking the city to waive application fees and other costs, so the money it would collect equals $500 per device, according to the Park Ridge Herald-Advocate. Park Ridge officials debated the U-verse expansion for more than an hour at a city council meeting on Monday. The city plans to tackle the issue at a meeting on Aug. 26 as well. There's no shortage of pay TV competition in Park Ridge, where the median value for homes is $446,600 and the median household income is $90,177, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In addition to TWC, DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) and Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH), WideOpenWest also offers service in parts of the city. USPTO rejects Verizon 'video on demand gifting' patent Verizon (NYSE: VZ) may be considering a way to allow FiOS TV subscribers to offer friends and family members the gift of free video-on-demand movies. But the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office has rejected a patent application the company filed for its "VOD gifting" method. According to a document published Thursday by the USPTO, Verizon's approach involved offering customers the option of sending other subscribers coupons for individual VOD titles or monetary credits that could be used to buy any title in its library. USPTO sent Verizon a "final rejection" notice for the patent in July, according to the transaction history it published for the application. Verizon had filed the application in February 2012. The concept of VOD gifting may be pursued by other pay TV and technology providers, including Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). On Thursday, USPTO published a recent patent application from Apple titled "Media Gifting Devices and Methods." Apple details in the application how it may be able to allow iTunes customers to transfer electronic gift certificates for content by using near-field communications technology. NFC could allow smartphone or tablet users to transfer gift certificates by touching a smartphone or tablet to another device that is NFC-capable. USPTO records show it is still reviewing the Apple patent application. | Source: Verizon and USPTO | For more: - see the Verizon patent application - see the Apple patent application Related articles: NPD: FiOS, U-verse subs spending more on VOD than Comcast, DirecTV, Dish Network customers Verizon using FiOS On Demand Marathon to boost paid VOD sales Read more about: Verizon back to top | 5. Sony said to license Viacom networks for OTT service Sony has reportedly reached a tentative deal that would let it sell Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) cable networks to consumers through an over-the-top pay-TV service it plans to introduce later this year. The service would be available on Sony's PlayStation video game console and some of its smart TVs and eventually on Sony-made tablets and phones, the Wall Street Journal reported. The consumer-electronics maker would join Intel (Nasdaq: INTC), Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Apple, (Nasdaq: AAPL) and potentially others as new entrants in the pay-TV space. The deal with Viacom, which according to the Journal has not been finalized, would give Sony access to popular programming like Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and MTV. Access to mainstream TV programming has been a hurdle new entrants to the pay-TV sector have faced. Earlier this summer, reports surfaced that TV networks' existing contracts with cable operators might be preventing their ability to work with online distributors. Each of these new services reportedly has its own unique bells and whistles. Apple reportedly presented networks with a plan that would compensate them for the ads viewers skipped when watching recorded programming. Intel's service will come with a vast cloud DVR. Sony's service, the Journal reported, will offer viewing recommendations based on other shows the subscriber has watched.
