| | | | | Farm Bill Update Last month, the House of Representatives decided to split the Farm Bill in two and vote separately on an agriculture bill, which would include funding for all agriculture programs, and a nutrition bill, which would fund anti-hunger programs. The House passed the agriculture bill on July 11 on a strictly party-line vote and began work on the nutrition bill. Now, details are emerging about what’s included in the nutrition bill, and it doesn’t look good for Americans struggling with hunger. While nothing is official, it is expected that the nutrition bill will cut SNAP (formerly known as Food Stamps) by $40 billion, DOUBLE what was included in the previous House Farm Bill. That means we need supporters like you to help us weigh-in with your Members of Congress about how important anti-hunger programs are to your community.
You can start by sending a simple email to your Members of Congress urging them to visit their local food bank during the August recess so they can learn more about hunger in their community. Our goal is to have every member of Congress visit a food bank in 2013, and we need your help to make that happen. Please act today to send a message to your members of Congress to ask them to schedule a visit to a food bank in 2013. | | | | | | | A Note from Bob Aiken, Feeding America CEO For many of the families and individuals we serve at Feeding America, receiving groceries through the local food bank is just one way they cope with food insecurity. Government-funded programs are an essential part of the hunger-relief system in your community. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly food stamps, is the cornerstone of the federal nutrition safety-net. SNAP helps protect 47 million people from going hungry, nearly half of whom are children. The average monthly SNAP benefit per person is $133.85, or less than $1.50 per person, per meal. Unfortunately, all SNAP participants will see their benefits reduced on November 1, 2013. This September, during Hunger Action Month, I will take the SNAP Challenge to help raise awareness about the need to protect SNAP and the positive impact the program has on millions of families nationwide. I want to send a message that food assistance programs like SNAP are critical to our nation’s prosperity. For one week, I will budget $1.50 per meal—or $31.50 for the week—and share my experience via social media. I would like to invite you to join me in this challenge. Together, we can help educate people about SNAP, fight the stigma too often wrongly associated with the program, and ultimately raise awareness that many of our neighbors continue to need assistance to put food on the table.
